EDGE

Original Brief: Create a way for backpackers and modern hikers to charge their phone in any condition. Duration: September 2013 - August 2014

In cooperation with:

WHAT

• Around the world in nature• In all terrains such as moun-

tains, forest, desert etc.

• Digital native who loves inde-pendent traveling

• Open minded extrovert who enjoys nature

• Independence• Stay connected to family and friends• Ability to call for help• Rising trend of smartphone

users

DESIGN BRIEF

• Running out of battery due to no charging opportunities is the core problem

WHO WHERE WHY

Page 5: Malte Frisch Portfolio

• EDGE has been developed based on results from a two month user research (more than 150 travellers and backpackers were involved)

• Focus was on usability, functionality as well as that it is very compact and easy to transport

• Analysis of weaknesses and strengths of existing products

CONCLUSIONS

• Target wants to be independent & prefers a portable charging device • Possibility to charge at anytime, anywhere under any conditions

(e.g. not depending on sun or wind)• Integrated in the common equipment of a backpacker• Shouldbeverycompactandspaceefficient• Electricity should be created by wasted energy

RESEARCH

IDEATION & SKETCHINGAsaconclusionfromtheresearch, fireisthemostusedenergysourcefromthetarget. Instead of wind or sun, it can be produced at any time and is an ideal source for energy harvesting. After analzying the best way to use Thermoelectric Elements (TEG), inspiration for the shape was taken from stealth design, which has minimalisitc and dynamic strong shapes that support the feeling of a durable and reliable product.

EDGE Powerhandle: has a 4.6 Ah Lith-ion battery which is enough to charge the average smart phone three times over.

Lid: keeps heat inside the pot and can be used as a pan for frying or baking. Pot: has a 3 litre capacity for a wide range of mealsandtheroundbottomprovidesheatefficiency.HeatIn-sulated handle provides good grip for cooking and folds around lid to close the pot when all parts are stacked inside.

Kettle: boils 1 litre of water in a few minutes. It incorporates 2 powerful TEG elements which use the heat difference to gen-erate electricity for battery and connectivity functions in the Powerhandle.

FINAL CONCEPT

Please see the video for more information about EDGE by clicking on the link below or using the QR Code: www.edge-explore.com

The EDGE concept is a compact outdoor cooking set that provides a fast and lightweight cooking opportunity in a small compact unit, storable in any backpack. Casual cooking and water boiling is used to power the charging and connectivity functions that are integrated in the Powerhandle. It uses heat while cooking to generate electrici-ty, which is stored in the Power Handle.

Mobile devices such as smartphones can be charged any-where in the outdoors because of a reliable and endless source of battery power. Furthermore, innovative extra fea-tures such as the satellite connectivity can safe lifes in an emergency and make EDGE outstanding on the market.

Not only is the EDGE concept innovative, but it also aims to meet a growing demand and market of needs for solutions for the modern mobile lifestyle. The concept focuses on improv-ing and innovating existing outdoor charging solutions, which currently are inefficient and do not address awide enoughrange of needs.

Designed based on the needs of the user : - Ultralightweight & durable by using Titanium- Easy to transport through stackable parts- Powerful charging with a 2.1 amp output- Fast cooking under any conditions with the Firebase- Emergency phone network connectivity anywhere

Ecooker How to save energy usage in modern kitchens? 2012 - Summer term Duration: 3 months

In cooperation with:

Page 17: Malte Frisch Portfolio

WHAT

• Modern kitchens in Western Europe

• Young families or individuals • Saving Energy and money

DESIGN BRIEF

• Wasting Energy in modern kitchen is the core problem

WHO WHERE WHY

Page 18: Malte Frisch Portfolio

IDEATION & SKETCHING

Through research in kitchens the common stove was detected as a major energy waste source. The target group wastes energy by: - Setting the stove control unnecessarily on full power - Inefficient temperatures due to unclear or missing settings

Ideation was about simplifying the usage of a cooktop and making it more efficient at the same time. Thus the reduction to only one con-trol took place.

ABOUT ME

I’m Malte, 24 years old, coming from Germany. I’m in the sixth semester of my Industrial Design Engineering studies at The Hague University of Applied Sciences in The Hague.

Now I am looking for an internship between 27.04.2015 - 10.11.2015, where I can apply my skills and creativity and final-ize my graduation startup project. Design in general has always been one of my greatest interests, as it is surrounding us everywhere in our daily l ifes and I l ike to look at the things with a different perspective. Looking at a product, I always think about how to improve it whereby aesthet-ic should follow functionality - and not the other way around. I want to design products that are not only stunning and durable, but also valuable. I am an open minded teamplayer who likes to communicate and work together with people from different backgrounds and cul-tures. During my studies I always worked in international teams on design projects that involved Philips, IIC, Unilever or Rijkswa-terstaat. With me as an intern you will get a designer that is mindful of the details, structured in his process, eager to learn and share ideas. For the internship I would like to work on the Project EDGE which is in the final stage of the design process. I hope you see the po-tential in EDGE and the portfolio and if you are interested I would like to send you a detailed brochure about EDGE. I’m looking forward to hearing from you. Malte Frisch
