Mark 4:37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling. 38 But He was in the stern,
asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
40 But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” (NKJV)
Can you relate to how the Disciples were feeling in this passage? I know I can. How many times have I been sailing the sea of
life, thinking everything is fine? Jesus is with me, the sea is calm, and I know my way around the water. Then, out of nowhere, a
storm pops up. My relaxing boat ride, has turned into a perfect storm, and I am taking on water. I grab a bucket to start bailing water
out of the boat, and back into the sea, but it is coming in too fast. The rain is filling the boat of my life, the waves are piling on, and it
seems like Jesus is completely unaware of what is going on. Yup, I can relate.
I, too, have questioned Jesus’ concern for me when life has brought a squall into my sea. I, too, have cried out to Him, wondering
if He cares at all, not only for my life, and those in the boat with me, but for His life too. I have tried to make it about His safety,
when in reality, it was about my own.
In all likelihood, you have probably heard a message, or read a devotional about this passage. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if
you have seen and heard several of both. Why is that? Why do we constantly have to be reminded of this particular event in the life
of Jesus and the Disciples? I believe it is because it is easy to say we have faith when the sea is calm, but difficult to show faith with
the sea is tempestuous.
Here are some personal take-aways from this passage. First, Jesus is with the Disciples in the calm and in the storm. Jesus could
have escaped, leaving the Disciples to fend for themselves. But, He didn’t. Second, even though the Disciples were panicked, Jesus
was calm. At that moment, the Disciple’s actions and attitudes reflected their life situation. There was a storm in their life, and there
was a storm in their minds and hearts. No doubt, they knew people who died while on the sea in a storm just like this one. Knowing
that many of the Disciples were fisherman by trade tells me they had likely been in other storms, on this same sea and had survived.
The fact that they were scared, tells me this storm was serious. Third, when the storms of life beat on the boat of our life, even
though the storm is terrible, we need not come to Jesus in a panic. He already knows the situation, and He already knows the
solution. Fourth, storms introduce fear, but faith drives out fear. The answer to fear is not fight or flight, but faith; faith that Jesus
is present, and He knows the solution.
