Hughes MALE Academy Takes The Lead On Saturday, November 7th the Hughes Middle School MALE Academy students
saluted and honored those who have served our country at 17th Annual Long
Beach Veterans Day Parade. All Hughes MALE Academy young men were in
uniform to recognize our vets. After the
parade, Hughes MALE Academy students and
their parents had an opportunity to enjoy food,
music, a career expo, and a kids fun zone
during a festival that took part at Houghton
Park. Way to go Hughes MALE Academy
students and teacher, Mr. La Chartie!
Jordan MALE Academy Embraces Ethnic Studies On October 20, 2015 Jordan MALE Academy students were welcomed by California State
University Los Angeles. In efforts to provide hands on experience and learning of the MALE
Academy Ethnic Studies curriculum students embarked to CSULA to sit through and take part
in an actual Pan-African American college level class provided by Dr. Melina Abdullah.
Pan-African Studies (PAS) encompasses the systematic investigation of the History, Culture,
Social Relationships, Political Economy, Literature, Arts, and Languages of peoples of African
descent and their contribution to world civilization. This experience provided a unique
foundation for critical thinking and socio-cultural analysis to our students. They also received
a presentation from the office of EOP (Educational Opportunity Program - A program for 1st
generation college students) and listened to a CSULA student panel which allowed for an
engaging Questions and Answers about the overall college experience. Special thanks to the
Social Justice Institute Inc. & Peter Ly, Jordan MALE Academy Teacher for your hard work.
Cabrillo MALE Academy Tree Planting Project
The Port of Long Beach provided funding to plant 6,00 trees in Long Beach neighborhoods
through 2020. Businesses and community groups partnered with Neighborhood Services to
provided volunteers at the tree planting event. On Saturday November 14th the Male
Academy students from Cabrillo High School participated in this event as a way to give back
to their community in the form of service for this momentous occasion. Special thanks to Mr.
Crowder-Jones and Dr. Elio Mendoza for allowing the students of Cabrillo High School Male
Academy to proudly represent their school.
Washington MALE Academy Take Initiative
In the months of October and November the Washington MALE Academy students
volunteered and learned to give back at the Long Beach Rescue Mission. The Rescue Mission
is located around the corner from the middle school and students wanted to help their
neighborhood. As an entire group, they stepped up their leadership by helping to both serve
and clean the kitchen and the dining area. This experience is an on-going effort to educated
our young men on the importance of giving back, while also exposing them to the many
benefits of working together as a team for a common goal. Congratulations Washington
MALE Academy & Advisors, Cherilyn Walker, Garry Miller, & Ricky Gipson!
JPLUS MALE Academy Explains Why MALE Academies Are Important To Schools
JPLUS high school MALE Academy student
leaders were part of a panel at a Long Beach
G.R.I.P. (Gang Reduction Intervention
Prevention) meeting in September. GRIP
supports the city’s anti-gang efforts and has
supported the LBUSD MALE Leadership
Academy over the last several years through a
CalGRIP grant. JPLUS MALE Academy student
leaders answered questions and proved how
supports in school like the MALE Academy
provide students second chances and expose them to opportunities for a better future.
Millikan and JPLUS MALE Academy Prepares for Human Trafficking Awareness Month in January
In the month of December the Millikan
and JPLUS MALE Academy students
worked with Lieutenant Dan Pratt of the
Long Beach Police Department. The
collaborative evolved from MALE
Academy leaders wanting to learn more
about city wide efforts in rescuing victims
(mostly girls) of human trafficking.
Lieutenant. Dan Pratt educated the
Millikan and JPLUS MALE Academy
young men on consequences of
human trafficking and the various
efforts that the human trafficking task
force has implemented across the
city. The students were so
empowered to help the cause that
MALE Academy students will now be
hosting a Human Trafficking
Awareness Day in January.
Millikan Attends California Conference for Equality & Justice Camp
In the month of December the MIllikan MALE Academy attended a weekend long camp facilitated by The California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ). CCEJ is a human relations organization dedicated to confronting bias, bigotry and racism through education, conflict resolution and advocacy. Their work focuses on a broad range of “isms” – the manifestations of discrimination and oppression based on religion, race, gender, age, ability, gender identity, and sexual orientation – ranging from bias-related crimes and violence to racial profiling to systemic oppression. The Camp gave students a safe place to
learn and engage in dialogue about culture, communication and conflict. Students are placed in an environment where they are valued and listened to, skills they need to lead and succeed, and the courage to share those skills with others. Special thanks to Mr. Walton, MALE Academy teacher & Principal Michael Navia for your support.
Parents & Students Benefit from a FREE Public Counsel Workshop
A Workshop hosted by the Education Equals Opportunity Too (E=O2) was held at Washington Middle School on Dec 10, 2015 to provide legal support on a wide range of issues related to immigration, bankruptcy, rental agreements and employment. After the workshop, all parents were provided with referrals and materials by Public Counsel, the largest Pro-Bono Law Firm at no additional cost. The MALE Leadership Academy Program thanks Megan Trevor, Washington Middle school Principal, and the E=02 Program for their continued support to MALE Academy parents and students.
