Male cosmetic surgery
Societies and cultures across the world cherish certain things. The two most universally cherished traits
are beauty and youth. As such, cosmetic surgery for men and women has seen an uptick in recent
decades as an attempt to retain youthful features. Plastic surgery is often thought of as a feminine
procedure since many women tend to get cosmetic enhancements done in order to reverse the effects
of aging or to improve what they perceive as flaws with their appearance. However, according to
Dr.Torgerson, a facial plastic surgeon in Toronto, cosmetic surgery for men is quickly becoming just as
popular as it is with the women, and for a lot of the same reasons. Men want to retain their youth and
good looks in order to protect job prospects, improve dating prospects, or to bring harmony and balance
to their appearance.
What Were The Top Surgical Procedures For Men? According to the American Society of Plastic
Surgeons, the most popular male cosmetic enhancement procedures for the year 2012 (the latest year
that data was made available) were as follows:
1. Rhinoplasty also known as nose job
2. Eyelid surgery also known as blepharoplasty
3. Liposuction
4. Male Breast reduction
5. Face lift
Men often opt for these surgeries since they tend to enhance masculine features such as the jaw line or
a strong brow line. However, some surgeries are more popular with certain groups of men.
What are the most popular groups of male plastic surgery patients? Writing for the transnational
business journal Business Insider, Manhattan-based plastic surgeon Dr. Douglas Steinbrech categorized
the male patients that he sees most often into four groups.
“Athletic dad”: This category is a catch-all for most other men. These are men who got caught up in
family life or married life and find themselves looking less than acceptable by their own standards. Most
of the time, men will come in for breast reduction, liposuction, nose reshaping, and eyelid surgery if
they fit this category.
“Male model”: The male patients who fit into this category tend to aim for liposuction in order to
enhance their abs and jawline augmentation in order to give a more chiseled jawline. They’ll also go for
pectoral implants and gluteal implants to complete their chiseled look.
“Athlete”: These patients go for the same procedures as the male model, but bigger. They want large
pectoral and gluteal implants, but due to their gym-based lifestyle they also tend to seek breast
reduction surgery.
“Business Men”: The men who fit this category’s parameters are generally in positions of power in their
chosen career path. They seek plastic surgery in order to convey a sense of youth and trustworthiness,
so they’ll often get eyelid surgery and a face lift while leaving a few wrinkles in order to show some
tenure.
In today’s day and age more men are undergoing cosmetic procedures. Some of which are non -surgical
and some that are more invasive. Below is a video of Dr.Torgerson talking about male plastic surgery at
his Toronto cosmetic clinic.
