Malco Products, SBC, is celebrating its 70th anni-versary in 2020. Malco’s history of innovation over the years stems from a culture of continuous improvement and a commitment to producing labor-saving tools of lasting quality and performance.

In 1950, Mark Keymer, a young steel supply sales-man, started Malco Products in his garage, manu-facturing and marketing a pipe crimper for installing metal ductwork in heating systems. Since then,

Malco has insisted on the same high-quality construction, manufacturing “tools of the trade” for professionals in the HVAC, exterior remodeling, fence, deck and rail

installation and auto body repair and refinishing industries.

For the past seven decades, Malco has focused on new product development, responding to emerging market needs for specialized products, and continually relies on feedback from the hard-working trade pros who use the tools day in and day out. The following are just a few of the innovative products Malco has introduced over the years: Zip-in Screws, TurboShear Line, and Cleanable-Reversible Hex Chuck Drivers (C-RHEX).

Today, Malco’s employee owners continue the tradition of quality and innovation and distribute thousands of products to trade professionals in the U.S. and around the globe. As an employee-owned Specific Benefit Corporation, a legal designation that indicates a specific social benefit, employee ownership, keeping jobs local and strengthening communities are the primary drivers of Malco’s business decisions.

Malco has remained a strong supporter and advocate of careers in the trades over its history – donating significant quantities of in-kind products and apparel annually to a variety of skilled trade education programs, competitions and events across the country. Malco also coordinates the “Head of the Class” Student Recognition Program that partners with education programs across the country to recog-nize high-achieving students and entire graduating classes in the HVAC/sheet metal, building construction and auto body repair fields.

Great Game of BusinessMalco Products, SBC, one of the nation’s leading manufacturers of high-quality, American-made tools announced that the company was recognized as a member of the 2019 All-Star Award Team at the 27th Annual Gathering of Games conference hosted by the Great Game of Business® (GGOB). Each of the 29 members of the All-Star Team stood out as the best of the best in open-book management and were highlighted at the conference in September.

At the Gathering of Games conference, the open-book management community honors and celebrates the remarkable achievements of companies from around the globe that have fully embraced the principles of open-book management and GGOB, and have demonstrated outstanding results.

Tapping into the universal human need to win, GGOB educates employees in the rules of business, rallies them around a common goal, empowers them to see and improve the score and engages them with the opportunity to win or lose as a team.

Malco Products implemented GGOB by utilizing financial projections, weekly man-agement and company huddles, scoreboards and financial literacy training for all associates.

“The GGOB, especially the financial literacy training and sharing the numbers, helped everyone feel and act more like a business owner,” says Mardon Quandt, Malco COO and president. “Malco is dedicated to the open-book management style, empowering our employee-owners to take an active role in the success of our business. Through greater financial literacy and accountabilities at all levels, efficiencies and lead times have improved at Malco. Sales have increased to record levels as have net operating profits. Since Malco first implemented GGOB, associates have collectively received over $1 million in company incentive bonus payments—which has helped engage associates while giving them a greater stake in the performance of the company.

Each school term, Malco recognizes high-achieving students and entire graduating classes in the HVAC/sheet metal, building construction and auto body repair fields through the “Head of the Class” Student Recognition Program.

Through the no-cost Head of the Class program, educators can nominate an outstanding graduating student to receive a significant Malco tool gift with an average value of $150. The entire graduating class receives Malco caps. Since 2005, the Head of the Class program has reached more than 65,000 students, including 3,500 “Head of the Class” honorees, representing more than 740 high school career technical education programs, technical schools, union Joint Apprenticeship Training Committees and industry association programs across the U.S. and Canada.

The new year brings an exciting posi-tion change for Malco associate Kristi Stanwick, as she transitions from Purchasing to Sales. To tell Kristi’s story, let’s rewind back to her higher education days. Eager to excel, Kristi earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications with an emphasis in advertising and a minor in graphic de-sign from St. Cloud State University.

After graduating college, Kristi kicked off her career as a conference planner for approximately three years, which allowed her to take a budget and turn it into a professional event. In that role, she was responsible for giving presentations, coordinating travel/lo-gistics, and planning meals, to name a few duties. Kristi and her husband decided to relocate to pursue an op-portunity in the food industry by own-ing a bar and restaurant for six years in the town that they still currently reside in. Fast forward to 2008, when she became a buyer for the first time for a medical device company called Crest Healthcare Supply. Fun fact: Kristi originally applied at Crest for a marketing position, but things have

a way of working out! Since the role of a buyer was new to Kristi, she im-mersed herself with the necessary skills as a buyer before working at two other companies after a few years with Crest.

Kristi began her journey with Malco in January of 2014, marking her transi-tion to her new position in January of 2020 as her six-year anniversary with the company. She started as a buyer before accepting a promotion as a senior buyer with the New Prod-uct Development (NPD) Department, where she established new processes and suppliers for Malco’s new facility in DeWitt, NE. During this time, she earned a Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) des-ignation through the American Pro-duction and Inventory Control Society (APICS), which is recognized globally as the standard of professional com-petence. Currently, Kristi is still work-ing on capital equipment purchases, while also representing Malco at tradeshows. Her experience in New Products has allowed her to expand her knowledge on Malco products,

which comes in handy when end us-ers ask questions about the capabil-ity of each tool at the shows. Overall, Kristi enjoys networking, data analy-sis, and learning, in addition to having an interest in innovation. Attending future sales events will allow her to further develop her skills in all these areas.

Fun Facts About Kristi:• Kristi is an avid reader. She has been in a book club for a decade and counting with some friends in her neighborhood.

• She and her husband Chad have two sons named Jordan and Tyler. The two keep their parents very busy, since Jordan is involved in speech and drama, and Tyler is in-volved in football, basketball, and baseball. Unless Kristi and Chad are traveling for work, they are in the seats supporting their boys at all of their events.

• As a family, they like camping, boating, movies, Game of Thrones, visiting loved ones, and traveling to-gether.
