48th Annual Scientific Meeting / Annual General Meeting 20182

The upcoming 48th MOA ASM 2018 will be held in Penang, the Pearl of the Orient.

We are in the midst of organising the meeting and the scientific committee is busy putting the programme together. “Bugs, Bones and Surgeons’ Moans” is the

theme of the meeting and we will be focusing on infection in Orthopaedics and its various subspecialties as well as its many facets. The difficulty of diagnosis, its management and prevention of surgical site infection and the awful infected implant. The theme is a word play on the aide memoire for clinical features of hypercalcaemia (bones, stones, groans and psychic moans). More importantly, “Bugs, Bones and Surgeons’ Moans” underscores the challenges the orthopaedic

community faces. The emergence of multi-resistant bacteria in orthopaedics, the destruction of bone and defects it creates and the increasing complexity, cost and morbidity for the patient that translate to surgeon despair. In my subspeciality, it is the most common cause for early revision and the most dreaded. The forward from a consensus meeting on periprosthetic joint infection which should apply broadly to orthopaedics states that “It is not an exaggeration to claim that fear of infection lives in the hearts of every surgeon who steps into the operating room daily”.

In prevention, more education can be done. Operating theatre personnel and scrub nurses, junior doctors and assistants, anaesthetists, ward staff, infectious diseases physicians, microbiologists all the way up to hospital administrators who make policy and operating procedures play a role and we hope this MOA meeting will be well attended by them too.

The theme is somewhat catchy but sombre and quite in contrast to our celebratory theme last year in which we celebrated the 50th year of the MOA and looked back at the 50 years of our society and reexamined time-tested orthopaedic surgical procedures. The 2018 meeting in Penang promises to be a memorable meeting at a well laid out conference venue. Put the dates in your calendar - 10th to 12th May 2018.

On a last note, we will be having electronic posters which will cycle through the posters as well as consoles for those who want to read specific posters. Over the years the numbers of poster submissions has been increasing and last year there were 290 posters displayed. This year we will be limiting it to 200. Please submit early.

Prof Dr Azhar Mahmood MericanOrganising Chairman

48th MOA ASM 2018

Assoc Prof Dr Tengku Muzaffar Tengku Mohamed ShihabudinScientific Chairman48th MOA ASM 2018

On behalf of the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association (MOA), it is my pleasure to invite you to the 48th MOA Annual Scientific Meeting (MOA ASM) which will be held in the island city state of Penang from the 10th to 12th May 2018.

The annual scientific meeting of MOA has always been a highlight meeting of the year. This meeting has grown in numbers in tandem with the growth of our association and orthopaedics in Malaysia. MOA organises more than just the annual MOA ASM as part of our association’s role is to ensure that there are plenty of opportunities for our members to continue their professional developments. Thus, I encourage everyone of our annual members and fellow orthopaedic surgeons who have yet signed up as members, to join MOA and stay updated and contribute to the developments of our profession in this country.

In MOA ASM 2018, we are bringing you a very scientific focused theme of “Bugs, Bones and Surgeons’ Moans”. Our Organising Chairman and Scientific Chairman’s goal is to bring urgent attention to an issue which bugs all of us. There has been much new informations, strategies of treatment and new drugs and medical devices introduced in past few years. Latest technologies such as nano-technology to combat the bugs, new drug deliveries system and current systematic approaches by prominent authorities in this field will be discussed. Join us at this meeting to refresh your knowledge and pick up new arsenal to fight against bugs in your daily practice. By better managing infection in our hospitals, we will help ensure better patient care, reduce the readmissions of secondary infections and significantly save on financial and psychosocial costs.

For our younger fraternity members and those who have strong interest in research, keep the abstract submissions coming in. In 47th MOA ASM 2017, we received a record high number of 464 abstracts submitted; evidence that the research culture in Malaysia orthopaedic has reach an outstanding level. Our Scientific Committee has indeed raised the standards of accepted abstracts to be presented as either free paper oral or poster presentation formats. I encourage you to submit early and submit your best work. “Celebrate what you have accomplished but raise the bar each time you succeed.”

In the near future, all medical officers and specialists will have to collect CPD points as part of the requirements for us to renew our annual practicing license and specialist registrations. The minimum number of CPD points is 20 points and our MOA ASM 2018 will be structured to ensure that our MOA members and all

participants will be able to collect their full 20 CPD points from this meeting.

The 48th MOA ASM 2018 would be a comprehensive and informative meeting under the leadership of the Organising Chairman, Prof Dr Azhar Mahmood Merican and Scientific Chairman, Assoc Prof Dr Tengku Muzaffar Tengku Mohamed Shihabudin and their capable scientific committee.

The conference venue will be held in the Pearl of The Orient, Penang. During your free time, do indulge in our favourite Malaysian past time of food and shopping in Penang.

I look forward to seeing all of you in May 2018!

GETTING TO PENANG

Option 1: By carThe North-South Highway connects Penang to major cities on the West side of Peninsular Malaysia. Travel by highway can take anywhere from 4-5 hours with toll charges in between. Once you reach Butterworth, which is the island’s main entry point from the mainland, you may take either the Penang Bridge or the ferry to cross over to the island, which still operates from Butterworth to Weld Quay and will transport your vehicle too at a small charge. Return trips from Penang via the bridge is free of charge.

Option 2: By flight to Penang International AirportPenang Airport serves mainly the north of western Malaysia and the premises are medium-sized, with check-in and baggage reclaim being comparatively faster than at large sites. Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu International are both busier and larger. Penang International is mainly used by two budget airlines, namely AirAsia and Firefly.

On the island, the state capital of George Town

is home to landmarks such as Colonial Fort

Cornwallis, the ornate Chinese Clan House

Khoo Kongsi and the Kapitan Keling Mosque, all

testaments to centuries of foreign influence. To the west, a funicular ascends Penang Hill, with its

trails, flower gardens and panoramic views.

Fort Cornwallis - 17km away (35 minutes driving)*Fort Cornwallis is the largest standing fort in Malaysia. Set close to the Esplanade and Penang Clocktower, the star-shaped bastion is one of the oldest structures in Penang. Named after Marquis Charles Cornwallis, only a set of ten-foot high outer walls remain, with an enclosed park within. Situated on Penang’s north-eastern coast, a stroll along the privately-managed Fort Cornwallis’ perimeters will take you about 10 minutes. It is a surreal experience to hear the 1812 Overture playing over the speaker system while a Malaysian man dressed in full British regalia stands at the gate. Inside the fort is a variety of vaguely-informative exhibits.

Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak (KOMTAR) - 15.5km away (30 minutes driving)*KOMTAR, a prominent Penang landmark, houses Government departments, commercial offices, department stores, shops and restaurants. The 65-storey complex also contains theaters, squash courts and a geodesic dome which serves as a multi-purpose hall, while the 55th floor offers a panoramic view of the city and on clear days, also of Gunung Jerai in Kedah.

Pinang Peranakan Mansion - 15.2km away (30 minutes driving)*A very good example of adaptive reuse, the former home of Kapitan Chung Keng Kwee has been converted into a showcase of the opulent lifestyle of the Peranakans and their many customs and traditions, displaying over a thousand pieces of antiques and collectibles of this unique community.Opens: Monday - Saturday, 9:00am to 5:00pm Closed on Sundays and all public holidays Daily conducted tour at 11.30am and 3.30pm sharp.

The Habitat - 19.2km away (45 minutes driving)*Bordering one of Penang’s two virgin rainforest reserves, the spine of this fantastic addition to the Penang Hill experience is a finely crafted 1.6km nature trail. Along it you can access suspended walkways (thrillingly high up in the canopy), viewing platforms and pocket gardens featuring different species of tropical plants. You can explore on your own, but it’s better to take one of the guided tours; ask ahead about tours suited to children and night walks.

Escape - 30.7km away (50 minutes driving)*Escape Adventureplay Penang is a cool alternative to the beach and has quickly turned into a firm favourite with outdoor adventure seekers on the island. An outdoor, eco-conscious theme park specialising in zip-lining (a pulley suspended on a stainless steel cable, tied between two trees on an incline), the park also hosts other fun jungle activities for all ages. A creative and fun way to foster a love of the outdoors, especially among kids, the park started out in 2012 with standout attractions such as a free fall from a 20 metre-high jump platform, an inner tube slide and tree rope swing.

The Streets of George Town - 13.8km away (26 minutes driving)*George Town, although multicultural in composite, is predominantly Chinese and a big portion of it is Chinatown – a noisy, crowded, delightful conglomeration of people, goods, mobile stalls and old shophouses. For the best of George Town, walk along Love Lane, Pitt Street, King Street and Carnarvon Street.

Penang Butterfly Farm - 30.5km away (50 minutes driving)*Opened in 1986, the Penang Butterfly Farm – located in Teluk Bahang – is one of Penang’s best known and most popular tourist attractions. The eight-hectare butterfly sanctuary houses an impressively varied collection of butterfly species as well as an assortment of other insects. The farm sits at the foot of the Teluk Bahang hills – between the Taman Rimba Park and Teluk Bahang village. It features more than 4,000 butterflies from more than 120 groups as well as other insects and reptiles.

Penang Hill - 19km away (45 minutes driving)*Penang Hill was the first colonial hill station developed in Peninsular Malaysia. Comprising Western Hill, Bukit Laksamana, Tiger Hill, Flagstaff Hill and Government Hill, it is located six km away from Georgetown. The hilly and forested area is the state’s primary hill resort. Set 821m above Penang’s capital, islanders call it Bukit Bendera and it is generally about five degrees cooler than Georgetown. It is the last patch of tropical rainforest in Penang so the flora and fauna here have been protected since 1960. It does not have the same prominence as Genting Highlands, Fraser’s Hill or Cameron Highlands but it is one of Penang’s best-known tourist attractions due to its fresher climate.

Kek Lok Si Temple - 10km away (22 minutes driving)*Staggered on hillside terraces overlooking Air Itam, around 8km from the centre of George Town, Malaysia’s largest Buddhist temple is a visual delight. Built between 1890 and 1905, Kek Lok Si is the cornerstone of the Malay-Chinese community, which provided the funding for its two-decade-long construction (and ongoing additions). Its key features are the seven-tier Ban Po Thar pagoda and an awesome 36.5m-high bronze statue of Kuan Yin, goddess of mercy.
