  • 1.Avian Biodiversity at Malagos Watershed Baguio District, Davao City Geonyzl L. Alviola Dr. Bernadette del Rosario Melodie Claire Waay Nicefora Tubera Zeny B. Egut

2.

  • Malagos Watershed is one of the 8 watersheds supportingthewater supply of Davao City and protected by the government.
  • Since 1990 theforestfragment was deforested becauseof the loggers and somepart of the land were converted to agriculture.

3. But inearly 1990 Davao City Water District (DCWD) together with other environmental organization the establish a reforestation project to restore thedegraded forestfragment 4. Even it wasrehabilitated mostof theedge of the forest fragment were own by private sectors and converted to agriculture use. 5. Why thebirds?

  • The bird species is one of the known biological indicators in assessing andprovide crucial information on the ecosystem.
  • Each species of bird has its own habitat requirement(Steadman,1997 and Crosby,1998).

6. In Malagos Watershed..

  • There were four avian survey had been conducted in the protected area in a short period of time.
  • Some species ofbirds were notyet accountedbecause of migration behavior.
  • Regular avian survey within the vicinity of the watershed would provide an information or an update on listing ofbirds to serve as database to improve the wildlife management in the protected area.

7. Statement of the Problem:

  • General:This study aims to document bird species in Malagos Watershed.
  • Specific:
  • Identify and classify the species of birds within the protected area.
  • Provide a bird species inventory observe in one year as baseline data for monitoring with in the protected area.
  • Compare the taxonomic listing of birds done with the previous researches.
  • Determine the distribution of birds within the protected area.

8. Significance of the Study .

  • The inventory of birds at Malagos Watershed would be useful to the Philippine EagleFoundation and Government organizations like Davao City Water District to determine if their conservation or preservation programs show a positive or negative result.
  • To the community would also be aware of the present condition of the area.

9. Scope and Limitation:

  • The study will focus on the identification and assessment of avian species within the Malagos watershed within 11 months.
  • The collection will be twice aweek in amonth every 1st week and 3rd week using the mist netting and point count method.
  • Observation will start from 0500 hr to 1700 hr for mist nettingand 0600 to 1700 hr forpoint count in a fair weather condition.

10. Methodology

  • The area will bedivided based on habitat type for thesurvey.
  • two methods used in the survey to insure to capture also theground andshy birds.

11.

  • Mist nest will beset in the point count area.
  • Birds capture by mist nets will bemarked and photographed for documentation.

12.

  • To measure thediversity ofspecies in the areaSpecies Richness (S), Simpson Index (D), Shanon-Weiner Indexwill be used.

13. Thank you
