GREENS CREEK MINE TAILINGS DISPOSAL
FACILITY EXPANSION FINAL ENVIRONMEN
TAL IMPACT STATEMENT AND RECORD
OF DECISION
let on Admiralty Island, on the Admiralty Island National Monument. The Greens Creek FEIS describes a no-ac tion alternative as well as four action alternatives. The four action alternatives propose an increase in tailings disposal capacity for the Greens Creek Mine. The alternatives describe varying ways to increase tailings disposal capacity, looking at the proposed option to expand the existing location further into the Monument, and options to construct a second tailings facility three miles from the existing facility, outs ide the Monume nt boundary.
A Draft EIS was distributed for a 45-day public comment period on April 20, 2012, which ended on June 4 , 2012. Based on the analysis and public comments the Responsible Official, Forrest Cole, Tongass Forest Supervisor, selected a modification of Alternative D, which will allow Greens Creek to expand their exis ting tailings facility by approximately 18 acres into the Monument, but does not allow the construction of a second facility. A Record of Decision was signed on September 5, 2013, and a notice of availability is expeeled to be published in the Federal Register on September 13, 2013.
