The year 2014 marks the beginning of the 2nd quarter century of United Way of York County’s Tocqueville Society, founded in 1988 by two pillars of our community, Art Glatfelter and John Schmidt. We are honored and excited to continue this tremendous legacy by serving as Tocqueville Chairs for the 2014 campaign. The Tocqueville Society represents a very significant and growing portion of the annual United Way campaign. Over the past quarter century, there has been an impressive growth in the number of community leaders who recognize the positive impact of the United Way in York County and have chosen to strengthen their commitment to the community by joining the Tocqueville Society. We would like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation to all our Tocqueville Society members for your strong leadership and tremendous generosity. Under the leadership of Chair Rick Smith and Co-Chair Tony Campisi, the 2013 Tocqueville

Society Cabinet developed strategies to continue to grow the Society, as well as ensure

that more dollars remained within the United Way system. Moving forward, new Society

members are required to direct a minimum of 25% of their total gift to The Community Fund,

Focus Area(s) and/or Partner Agency(s). Tocqueville members who live outside of York County may also direct their gift to their home

United Way.

This year, as you consider a gift to the United Way of York County, consider a step up. Whether it

is a step up to become a leadership giver or a step up to the next level of giving, your generous

contribution will help the United Way raise essential funds for our community.

This year I am stepping up to the Representative level of Leadership Giving. My family has

committed to saving $10 a week on our grocery bill to be able to give that money back to the United

Way. We recognize there are unnecessary items or special treats we purchase each week that we

can forgo to create the savings. In turn, the United Way can allocate that money to a family who is

truly in need of food, shelter and clothing.

I ask you to think about where you can find a way to increase your gift to the United Way. The

generous support our Leadership Givers have shown in the past is greatly appreciated. Please

The Leadership Giving Council developed and implemented several strategies in 2013 to continue to promote

leadership giving and increase awareness throughout the campaign. The Council’s efforts centered around

communicating regularly with leadership givers via quarterly e-news, which highlighted member testimonials,

successful workplace campaigns, and overall leadership giving and general campaign updates. Additionally, the

Council conceptualized, planned and executed the annual Leadership Giving Thank You Reception, which

allowed United Way to connect with over 265 donors who support the campaign at the highest level.

The First Capital Club, named for York’s unique place in our nation’s history, recognizes

contributions of $1,000 - $9,999. In 2013, over 1,100 individuals and households supported the

campaign at this level, contributing over $1.6 million, representing 24.0% of the total campaign

dollars raised. The First Capital Club was proud to welcome 195 new members in 2013, and would

also like to recognize the 75 returning members who leaped a giving level.

Reesy Neff, Susquehanna Bank and Founding Chair of

Women Living United

This year marked the launch of a new giving

society called Women Living United (WLU). Our

purpose is “To unite women and demonstrate their

power to effect positive change as philanthropists,

role models, mentors and leaders”.

Seven women from the community stepped

forward to serve as ambassadors and lay the

groundwork for WLU. Currently, we have 115

members and have raised over $165,000 for

United Way of York County. We mirror the United

Way initiatives of education, income, and health.

What sets WLU apart is that our members use

hands-on engagement to make change happen in

our community. Beyond a yearly financial

contribution of $500 or more (women can also

pledge to step up to this amount within 3 years),

WLU members can invest their time and

professional talents in causes that they feel

passionately about.

WLU partnered with Crispus Attucks Association,

Inc., and their program G.R.E.A.T., Girls Residing

Educating and Achieving Together, for our

volunteer project. We held a “Make this House a

Home” day where we gathered household items

to help complete the new house for the girls that

would be moving into the home.

In 2014 WLU will hold a new member event, at

least one volunteer project and three “Interviews

with Inspiring Women” breakfasts throughout the

year to support our group and efforts. Now is the

time to join this group of inspired women who

want to play a role in making York County greater!

W. Casey Deller, C.S. Davidson, Inc. 2013 Emerging Leaders Society Chair, United Way of York County

The Emerging Leaders Society (ELS) is comprised of self-identified United Way supporters in the 21 to 40-something age range, who donate a minimum of $250 to the annual campaign. Initiated in 2008, ELS was formed to reach to the next generation of York County leaders and connect them to the United Way through networking events with community leaders, leadership development training, and volunteerism. Since its inception, the Emerging Leaders Society has grown to over 400 members who donated nearly $250,000 to the 2013 campaign alone. Through the Emerging Leaders Society program, members are provided with varying opportunities to grow and develop. Networking events are held to provide business and social connections to other like-minded young professionals. Training and personal development sessions are conducted to provide guidance and learning. Volunteer opportunities are coordinated in a varying array of fields to provide additional opportunities to give back to organizations in our community. Additionally, ELS members are provided with opportunities to meet and interact with some of York’s most successful business and community leaders, sharing insights and experiences from their careers. Through each of these opportunities, these young leaders are exposed to the path of success in their professional and personal lives. Further, the principles of philanthropy and giving back to the community is instilled through learning the positive impact made by United Way of York County. The Emerging Leaders Society is York County’s connection to that next generation of philanthropists and business leaders. By providing them the tools to reach those successes, while making an impact in our community along the way, the United Way is strengthening its foundation for years to come.
