EU VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS
• Figures would have been signif icant ly higher without vehicle safety measures already taken by the EU
• Vehicle safety standards: exclusive competence (Art icle 114 of the EU Treaty)
• Last revision of the EU common vehicle safety rules in 2009 with the General Safety Regulat ion 661/2009 and Pedest rian Protect ion Regulat ion 78/2009
• The European Commission is considering making 24 new vehicle safety measures mandatory, ISA is one of them
VEHICLE SAFETY - ETSC PRIORITIES linked to the main risks
• Overridable assist ing ISA on all new vehicles default ON
• Alcohol interlocks on professional vehicles and a standard interface for all vehicles
• Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) including AEB-PCD
• Event Data Recorders (EDR)
• Improved pedest rian protect ion of fered by cars
• Safer t ruck f ronts and sides
• ….

• Fit all new vehicles (including turning HGVs) with AEB systems able to detect VRUs
• Fit all new vehicles (including trucks) with overridable assisting ISA

• TfL buy~900 buses /year. The whole flee t o f 9000 buses will be renewed in 10 years.
• Technology for the ISA t ria l was provided by Zeta Automot ive (part o f Arriva group).
