Hospital Receives Top Honor For Quality Stroke Care

Boca Raton Regional Hospital received the 2016 American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll. The Hospital is acknowledged for its continued success in applying the most up-to-date evidence-based treatment guidelines to improve patient care and outcomes in the community it serves.

Earning a Gold Plus designation means the Hospital achieved 85 percent or higher adherence to all Get With The Guidelines–Stroke achievement indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month periods and achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with five of eight Get With The Guidelines–Stroke Quality measures to receive the Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.

The accolade is the top recognition category awarded by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association and honors the Hospital’s continued commitment and success in implementing the highest level of stroke care with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients.

Boca Raton Regional Hospital has again been cited as a top-ranked regional hospital in U.S. News & World Report’s 2016–2017 annual review of its Best Hospitals. The Hospital is currently ranked 18th out of 300 hospitals in Florida and 6th in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metro area. Boca Regional is the highest ranked hospital in Palm Beach County.

U.S. News & World Report also rated Boca Regional a high-performing hospital in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery, heart failure and hip replacement.

“We are honored to once again be recognized as a top-ranked regional

hospital by U.S. News & World Report,” said Jerry Fedele, President and CEO of Boca Raton Regional Hospital. “It is truly gratifying to be acknowledged in such a significant manner for the level of care we provide.”

The U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 27th year, help guide patients to hospitals that deliver outstanding care across 25 specialties, procedures and conditions.

The Best Hospitals methodologies include objective measures such as patient survival, the number of times a given procedure is performed, infection rates, adequacy of nurse staffing and more.

“U.S. News evaluates nearly 5,000 hospitals nationwide,” said Ben Harder, Chief of Health Analysis at U.S. News. “A hospital that emerged from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of.”

The regional hospital rankings are aimed primarily at consumers who may not be willing or able to travel long distances for medical care. The rankings also give patients and their families more options of hospitals within their community.

For more information on Cellvizio, call 561.955.6631.For more information on the Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation and other signature events, call 561.955.4142.

Boca Regional’s Stephen Steinberg, MD, a board-certified gastroenterologist who specializes in Endoscopic Ultrasound, now has capabilities to perform biopsies on at-risk patients during standard endoscopy procedures to view internal tissues at the microscopic level instantaneously.

Boca Regional was the first in South Florida and is the only hospital in Palm Beach County to implement and offer Cellvizio® to patients, which revolutionizes the diagnosis and treatment of certain cancers.

Cellvizio, the smallest, flexible microscope in the world, is an optical biopsy technology that enables tissue within the human body to be viewed directly at the cellular level. It allows for the detection of anomalies that are invisible to the naked eye in various different organs, particularly in the gastrointestinal, urinary and pulmonary systems.

“With Cellvizio, we have a tool that provides microscopic images of the lining of the gastrointestinal tract and pulmonary tissue,” said Dr. Steinberg, Medical Director of the Pancreas & Biliary Center of South Florida at the Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute at Boca Regional. “This enables us to determine whether the tissue is benign or malignant, and helps us to guide treatment decisions

in real-time. We now have more visual information about internal tissues than ever before.”

Until now, areas that appeared abnormal during endoscopic procedures would be sent to a laboratory for analysis. With Cellvizio, the process is more precise, increasingly efficient and can accelerate the diagnostic and treatment process.

Cellvizio allows for the diagnosis of certain cancers to be considerably improved in real time, and is changing the face of endoscopy.

In utilizing the technology it is possible to avoid complicated interventions, including eliminating a number of additional invasive procedures. It is also possible to direct patients more quickly towards the appropriate treatment.

Boca Regional is only one of approximately 100 centers in the United States using Cellvizio. Cellvizio is cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the gastrointestinal tract and lungs.

For the fourth year in a row, Boca Raton Regional Hospital had the most primary-affiliated physicians of any hospital in Palm Beach County recognized as “Top Doctors” by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., a research firm specializing in providing consumers with information about the nation’s best doctors and hospitals. As recognized in the May/June issue of Boca Life Magazine, the doctors honored are listed in the tables below.

The Castle Connolly selection process for the Top Doctors listing begins with peer recognition through surveys that are given out to thousands of physicians nationwide and other healthcare leaders. They are asked to identify who they believe are highly skilled, exceptional doctors. This peer-recommended list is then reviewed by Castle Connolly for standards, including medical education, training, hospital appointments, professional achievements and any disciplinary or malpractice history.

“While our entire medical staff at Boca Raton Regional Hospital is committed to clinical excellence, these physicians deserve the additional praise that comes with such a prestigious accolade,” said Jerry Fedele, President and CEO of Boca Regional. “It is a reflection of the quantity and quality of our physician expertise.”

this is a tumor’s worst enemy

I N T H E F I G H T A G A I N S T C A N C E R ,

It’s the Accuray CyberKnife® M6™ System with InCise2 technology. It’s surgery without a knife…a game changer in radiation therapy. It can track and attack a moving target; delivering pinpoint, high-dose radiation with unmatched effectiveness, even when tumor motion occurs.

With exquisite 3D accuracy, it spares healthy tissue and offers a new option for patients with inoperable or surgically complex tumors. It cuts treatment times in half, is pain free, requires no anesthesia and allows for an immediate return to normal activities.

There’s only two of them in the entire country. And one of them is at the Lynn Cancer Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital.

Menders of Hearts…AND ALL THINGS CARDIOVASCULAR

It consists of 60,000 miles of arteries, capillaries and veins. In an average lifetime, its pump will beat three billion times. It sustains the body’s 75 trillion cells.

It’s the human cardiovascular system. And when compromised by damage, disease or defect, it requires surgical and medical intervention that matches the complexity of the system itself. It requires the Christine E. Lynn Heart & Vascular Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital.

For more information on Boca Raton Regional Hospital's Lynn Heart & Vascular Institute, call 561.95.LEARN (955.3276).

he Institute has created a new paradigm of care for patients with cardiovascular disease in South Florida. One that melds the most sophisticated technology with exquisite clinical technique. One that is pioneering new

procedures that are more effective and efficient. And one that has earned the Institute some of the most prestigious national accolades for its quality and outcomes.

The Whole is Greater than the Sum of its Parts

The Lynn Heart & Vascular Institute functions as a nexus for a complete range of cardiac and endovascular services —both surgical and non-surgical. Its physicians have trained or practiced at some of the most renowned programs in the country such as Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University, the University of Michigan, New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center and the Arizona Heart Institute.

The multidisciplinary team is made up of cardiac surgeons, cardiologists and cardiac anesthesiologists. Richard G. Cartledge, MD, FACS, a board-certified cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, joined Boca Regional in 2013 as Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery. His expertise includes minimally invasive valve repair and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement or TAVR, among other cutting-edge surgical techniques. With more than 100 patents in the medical device arena including an adjustable mitral valve repair device and a fully adjustable TAVR, Dr. Cartledge has a fundamental and intimate understanding

of the technologies available at the Lynn Heart & Vascular Institute. The team members' experience and expertise in TAVR have been instrumental in the growth of the Hospital’s program.

Working in concert with our physicians is a staff of nurses and technologists specially trained in the care of cardiovascular patients.

All of these professionals work in a complete environment of care that includes Cardiac Catheterization Labs, a leading- edge Cardiovascular ICU, Post-Coronary Intervention Unit, Cardiac Telemetry Unit, Advanced Arrhythmia Center, Cardiac Stepdown Unit and Cardiac Rehabilitation.

Topping this comprehensive list is the Institute’s Hybrid Operating Room. The first of its kind in Palm Beach County, the Hybrid OR provides high-quality imaging within the operating room itself at any time before, during and after the surgery. This, in turn, provides distinct benefits for both the patient and the surgical team.

With the Institute’s emphasis on minimally invasive cardiac and endovascular surgeries, the intraoperative imaging allows the surgeon to monitor the progress of the procedure in real time with superb visualization, and eliminates the need to suspend the surgery while conventional imaging is utilized. In doing so, procedural and anesthesia time is reduced, which lessens the recovery period, the risk for complications and surgical team fatigue.

A Destination Program for Cardiovascular Care

In recent years, more and more patients from a wider geographical area are turning to the Institute for care. In fact, its open-heart program is the only one in the region to be seeing increases in utilization. But the success of the Institute is not limited to that facet of its services. Rather, it has assembled a spectrum of offerings that are advancing the boundaries of cardiovascular care and offering new ways to send its patients home faster, better and with less pain.

For example, the Institute performs an ultra-minimally invasive procedure called left atrial appendage ligation that eliminates the area where patients with atrial fibrillation can develop life-threatening blood clots. Not only does the operation allow the patient to forgo anticoagulants, but also it is done through two incisions less than 1/5 of an inch in diameter. Other standard minimally invasive methods involve an incision of 2.5 inches. Most patients at the Institute who undergo this procedure go home the next day and require only over-the-counter pain medication.

Another procedure being done — and one that is reflective of the Institute’s commitment to minimally invasive surgery — is TAVR. TAVR provides a highly therapeutic treatment option for patients with symptomatic aortic stenosis and who are considered a high risk for standard valve replacement. TAVR delivers the replacement valve through a catheter that is inserted through a small incision in the groin or between the ribs, eliminating the need to surgically separate the chest.

Specialists at the Institute were also the first in Palm Beach County to use drug-eluting stents for the treatment of peripheral artery disease and to implement the most advanced cardiac resynchronization therapy for patients with heart failure. The Institute has also established itself as a regional referral center for using ultra-minimally invasive techniques for complex valve repair.

“Referring to the Institute as a nexus of care is not a slogan, but rather a promise to our patients,” said Dr. Cartledge. "With our accomplished team of surgeons and cardiologists, and a complete continuum of the most advanced tools and technologies, we offer patients in the region the most comprehensive cardiovascular care available in medicine today.”

T

THE CHRISTINE E. LYNN HEART & VASCULAR INSTITUTE opened at Boca Raton Regional Hospital in 2006, making it the first open-heart program started in Palm Beach County in over 22 years. The Institute has performed over 2,000 open-heart procedures, more than 15,000 cardiac catheterizations and over 5,000 angioplasties.

BocaCare® Primary Care is dedicated to providing exceptional medical treatment in a patient-centered environment. Our approach in primary care focuses on three key components: time, touch and team.

T I M E . We offer same-day appointments and in-office labs, X-rays, bone density and ultrasound.

T O U C H . We believe caring for you means showing you we really do. That’s why we have greeting areas instead of sliding-glass partitions. Moreover, you will always be referred to by name — not as “the patient in room three.”

T E A M . Our unique team approach and interoffice communication system minimizes wait time in rooms and maximizes time with nurses and physicians. No gaps. No waiting. Just a seamless transition of caregivers during your visit. It’s what makes BocaCare distinctive.

Our Orthopedic Institute offers the most sophisticated and innovative joint repair, spine care and sports medicine available in healthcare today.

For more information, visit brrh.com/orthopedics.

Boca Raton Regional Hospital offers home health services that provide you with skilled nursing, physical, occupational and speech therapy, medical social work, home health aides and private duty personnel in the comfort of your home or skilled nursing facility.

We ensure that our employees meet rigorous hiring standards, are fully insured and have proven professional qualifications and experience. This commitment goes beyond professional expertise and encompasses compassion and sensitivity as well as individualized care.

During your first visit, a registered nurse makes the initial assessment and develops a patient-specific plan based on physician’s orders and patient needs. We address home safety issues and a plan for medication management.

Our registered nurses and licensed practical nurses provide skilled care, private duty and intermittent visits. Our physical, occupational and speech therapists assist patients to become independent in the performance of daily activities, while our medical social workers help patients find resources from within the community. Home health aides provide personal care and assist with the activities of daily living.

We offer services for cardiac, diabetes education, infusion, neurology, oncology, pulmonary, rehabilitation and wound and ostomy patients.
