October 2014 Dear Parents, It’s hard to believe how quickly the year is passing! We have had so many great learning experiences already this year through our first theme “Who we are”. Our kids are more confident, more resilient, and more creative. As part of our IB/PYP program we assess student learning in more meaningful and authentic ways. All kids have talents and skills that are unique to them and they are able to show what they know and understand using a variety of tools and applications. When students are ‘able to really demonstrate what they understand through speaking, writing, building, problem-solving, then we as teachers and parents can know that they are growing and progressing as a learner. This is a huge shift from the more traditional testing model that is sometimes over emphasized and limited in scope to facts and broad knowledge of standards. You can help by making sure you read every night with them, get a good night’s rest each day, and eat breakfast in the morning. Please encourage your child every day to do their best and recognize that they are knowledgeable. As we approach the end of first theme for Early years, we are sure you will be excited to see the portfolio file of your child and also receive assessment reports. Dear Parents,

It’s hard to believe how quickly the year is passing!

Through this newsletter we want share with you the IB’s authentic assessment procedures.

We so appreciate all the many ways you support your child and encourage them towards practicing IB Learner’s profile and attitudes at home.

AssessmentAssessment is the gathering and analysis of information about student performance. It identifies what students know, understand, can do and feel at various stages in the learning process

It is the means by which we analyze student learning and the effectiveness of our teaching and acts as a foundation on which to base our future planning and practice. It is central to our goal of guiding the child, from novice to expert, through the learning process. (Primary Years Program Assessment Handbook © International Baccalaureate Organization).

Assessing – we discover what students have learned

Recording – we make note of our findings about what students have learned

Reporting – we pass that information on to parents, administration and other parties directly involved in students’ learning

Why do we assess?

✹✹ To promote continuous student learning and growth✹✹ To guide children through the five essential elements of learning contained in the PYP (concepts, knowledge, skills, attitudes and action)✹✹ To celebrate what students can do✹✹ To set goals and plan for future student growth✹✹ To evaluate the effectiveness of the learning program

When does assessment take place in EIS?Assessment is a continuous process that allows teachers, parents and children to identify areas of strength and areas that need improvement, as well as the effectiveness of the program. It is a daily activity at EIS and takes various forms. There are two main categories of assessment.

How do teachers record student progress?A range of assessment formats is used to represent a balanced view of each child and what they know, understand and can do in light of the content being assessed.

Teachers use a variety of assessment tools to record student progress in the PYP, including: rubrics, checklists, continuums, task or subject-specific criteria, forms, benchmarks/exemplars and narrative records.

Formative Assessment is interwoven with daily learning and helps teachers and students find out what children already know, understand and can do in order to plan for further student learning and growth. Formative assessment occurs throughout a learning unit or process.

Summative Assessment takes place at the end of a learning unit or process. It is a chance for students, teachers and parents to evaluate progress and demonstrate what has been learned over the course of time. It is a formal ending point to a taught unit or of a process but not necessarily the end of student learning in the areas being assessed.

Meaning

PrincipledPlease encourage your children to make connections to our learner profile attribute of the month! Some ideas of what this could include:

✹✹ a picture of someone that exemplifies/demonstrates being PRINCIPLED ✹✹ a picture of what they feel being PRINCIPLED looks like✹✹ an example of how they are demonstrate being PRINCIPLED at home✹✹ a magazine or video that exemplifies being PRINCIPLED✹✹ anything else that ties to being a PRINCIPLED!

Children who are principled act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups and communities. They take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them.

Children who are PRINCIPLED have a sense of fairness and are honest with themselves and with others. They understand that sometimes there are rules and they follow them. They have an understanding of moral reasoning.

Commitment

SportsEveryday children spend an hour on outdoor sports activity. Sports help children develop physical skills, get exercise, make friends, have fun, learn to play as a member of a team, learn to play fair, and improve self-esteem. Children will involve in Ball games such as Soccer, Volley ball, Basketball and Racket games such as Tennis, Badminton. Table Tennis, board games, Gymnastics, Hula hoop, Skipping etc to suit the growing age

ParkingThe parking area exclusively for the school enables safety for children pick up and drops, also regulates traffic.

This is my favorite word because in some way,

people who are committed are always much more interesting

and much more reliable, and much more,

I would say, deep than people who are not.Carlos Ghosn

Commitment unlocks the doors of imagination,

allows vision, and gives us the “right stuff” to turn our

dreams into reality.James Womack
