FORWARD | Making Lives Better

Bio Influences in Design Jhane launched her fashion company in 1976 with a pair of pants and a $5,000 loan from her biology professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology. In 1980, Jhane won the COTY Award for her unusual details and silhouettes, as well as for her unique fabrics.

In 1978, she bought her first loom and quickly became known for her innovative textiles, leading to her entree in the contract textile market. In 1983, Knoll invited Jhane to design a collection of contract textiles, and a 15-year collaboration was born. Working with Tandus Flooring since 1996, Jhane used her math and technology-driven approach to change the way modular carpet floor tiles are installed. After more than 35 successful years in the business, Jhane is now focusing on the contract interiors market.

Our Changing Impact as ArchitectsSteven is the 2016 Whitney M. Young Award Winner. He was born and raised in New York. His interest in architecture developed at an early age as a direct outgrowth of the exposure to the field provided by his father, architect Roger C. Lewis. Shortly following his grad-uation from the Syracuse University School of Architecture, he relocated to Los Angeles. There, he met and married Jill Nicholson, a noted textile artist.

A former president of NOMA (National Organization of Minority Architects), Steven now brings his experiences and context sensitivity to his role as Urban Design Director for the Central District at City of Detroit Planning and Development Department.

Emerging Technologies for Emerging ArchitectsRenée is a graduate of Harvard’s GSD and Harvard College. A registered architect, her professional experience includes work for Pei, Cobb, Freed and Partners and Richard Meier and Partners before founding Cheng-Olson Design. She taught at the University of Michigan and the University of Arizona before joining the faculty at the University of Minnesota.

Her research involves documenting case studies of buildings that integrate design with emerging technologies. Her current work in Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) is published by the American Institute of Architects and new research on collaborative projects by the General Services Administration has just begun.

Regional Design in the Western Mountain RegionStephen has led the design firm of his founding with the goal of making buildings and spaces inspired by the phenomena of nature, fueled by innovation and motivated by the essence of architecture in society and culture. Prior to founding Dynia Architects in Jackson Hole in 1994, Stephen was with the New York office of Skidmore Owings and Merrill.

He served on the AIA Wyoming Board of Directors for eight years and was elevated to the College of Fellows in the category of design in 2013. Dynia Architects was the AIA Wyoming’s “Firm of the Year” in 2008.
