When using patterns follow these general guidelines: • All pattern pieces are shown actual size so there is no need to reduce or enlarge. However, some may need to be joined with adhesive tape to complete the pattern piece so please follow the advice given. • Refer to the pattern layout diagram with each project to see which patterns are needed. • The patterns have seam allowances included. The allowances are stated in the project instructions. • Before cutting out your pattern pieces from your fabric, iron the patterns and your fabric to remove any creases. • Once copied, cut your paper patterns out first before you pin them onto the fabric. I like to cut on the black line, but to the outside not the inside. • Some patterns only show half of the shape and these are clearly marked. In these cases, place the marked line along the fold of the fabric, so when the shape is cut out you will double the pattern. • Cutting out is crucial to success so the use of pins when positioning a pattern on fabric will really improve your results. When pinning, keep the entire pin inside the pattern so there is no danger of your scissors hitting the pin. • Grainlines – placing your pattern pieces on the grainline of fabric helps the pattern pieces keep their shape. When using patterns follow these general guidelines:

• All pattern pieces are shown actual size so there is no need to reduce or enlarge.

• Once copied, cut your paper patterns out fi rst before you pin them onto the fabric.

The grainline of a fabric is parallel to the selvedges – the fi nished edges of a piece of fabric. For these tiny garments try to follow our layouts as we have placed the shapes along the grainline, but on this scale of things it’s not going to make or break your garment.

You will see symbols on the patterns – some of the common ones are shown and explained here.
