1. PittPharmacy students Lindsay Jablonski and Mary

Grace Fitzmaurice competed against teams from 134

other schools of pharmacy to take first place in the

Clinical Skills Competition at the American Society

of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical

4. As Randy and Renée Juhl Pharmacy Graduate

Scholar Awardees Joshua Niznik’s research uses

Medicare and VA data to study the quality of prescribing

and clinical outcomes in older adults in order to

improve their efficiency and safety. Katherine Eichinger

investigates ways in which the infant immune response

can be altered to better protect against respiratory

PIONEERING RESEARCH

Advance the frontiers of knowledge in drug discovery, drug development and optimal use of medications to enhance

the quality and vitality of life.


1. Sandra L. Kane-Gill, PharmD, MS, FCCM, FCCP

has extensively studied the incidence and causality of

adverse drug events (ADEs). Based on this work, she has

designed and implemented automated decision support

for real-time identification of ADE’s that provide the

opportunity to intervene before and prevent harm to

the patient.

3. Donna Huryn, PhD directs a National Cancer

Institute Chemical Biology Consortium Center, one of

only 10 centers in the nation. The Center synthesizes new

chemicals to support the discovery and development of

novel drug therapies for NCI investigators around

the world.

5. Da Yang, MD, PhD uses unique computational

techniques, genetic data from cancer patients and genetic

data from their specific tumors to select the best drug

therapy from among 49 FDA-approved anticancer agents.

This personalized approach to treatment promises to

greatly improve patient outcomes.

2. Song Li, MD, PhD has developed and patented a novel

drug delivery system combining three FDA-approved

drugs/immunotherapies in nanoparticles targeted

specifically to breast cancer cells. The unique formulation

times the release of each component, chemotherapy

before immunotherapy, to provide maximum efficacy.

4. The annual graduate student retreat offers the

opportunity for students to present and discuss their

children and their parents about drug safety and over-the-counter medications.

BUILDING HEALTHY & ENGAGED COMMUNITITES


1. The University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy has

partnered with the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association

in the development of the concept, strategic planning,

development, training, and launch of the Pennsylvania

Pharmacist Care Network (PPCN). This partnership has

positioned PPCN as a leading Network nationwide.

4 & 5. The Pitt Challenge, sponsored by the School of

Pharmacy and the Clinical and Translational Science

Institute, engaged in critical conversations regarding

healthcare and pharmacy with industry giants and

leading researchers. Pharmacy students, engineers, and

designers helped solve some of the biggest challenges

2 & 3. PittPharmacy was awarded the Creative Inter-

Professional Team Event Focused Award in the Sixth

Annual Script Your Future Medication Adherence

Team Challenge. Students reached 1,150 patients at

various community sites and events to raise awareness

1. PharmD students meet in a new elective where the needs of the LGBTQ community are

addressed. These include cultural competency and inclusive language, screening and diagnosis,

hormone replacement therapy, psychotherapy, primary and preventative care, and advocacy.

2. Pharmacy Innovation Experience Reaearch (PIER) is a program dedicated to giving high
