HistoryPensacola is proud of its rich heritage, historically significant events and
landmarks . You might be surprised to learn that we’re located on the site of
the first European settlement in what is now the United States . The historical
era began with the arrival of Spanish explorers in the 16th century . In 1559,
Tristan de Luna established a short-lived settlement on Pensacola Bay, but the
settlement was abandoned .
In the late 17th century, the Spanish returned to the area to found modern
Pensacola as an outpost from which to defend their claims to Spanish Florida .
The city’s strategic but isolated location, combined with European rivalries
playing out in North America, led to it changing hands between different
Western powers a number of times . In fact, in 1821, then-Governor Andrew
Jackson took possession of Florida from Spain in Pensacola’s Ferdinand
Plaza . During this period, the Spanish, French, British, United States, and the
Confederate States of America held the city . That’s why we celebrate “City of
Five Flags .” We invite visitors to celebrate our city with us . Our rich history lends
itself to appreciation of our fascinating historical and archaeological expositions,
allowing you to absorb our colorful past .
Arts and CultureSerious collectors, curious window shoppers, and those eager to enable their
creative side at everything from glass blowing to belly dancing at hands-on

working art centers are drawn to Pensacola’s dynamic art and cultural scene .
Boasting the “big five,” Pensacola is home to ballet, opera, symphony, theater
and an accredited museum of visual arts .
Events and FestivalsPensacolians love to celebrate . The area’s year-round festivals reflect the
diversity of our community . Many of our festivals reveal our heritage,
representing the Native American, Spanish, French, African-American,
Jamaican, Greek, and Scottish communities . We celebrate art and culture at
our film, songwriter, and art festivals . Other events are focused on our culinary
offerings, including seafood, crawfish, and bushwacker festivals .
BeachesVisitors will find some of the most beautiful beaches in the world where blue
skies, jewel-green waters and swaying sea oats provide the perfect backdrop .
Explore Gulf Islands National Seashore, the longest tract of protected seashore
in the United States . Our coast is perfect for fishing, surfing, scuba diving,
collecting seashells or just taking it easy . In fact, TripAdvisor, Dr . Beach, and the
Travel Channel have ranked Pensacola’s beaches among the best in the country .
ShoppingHistoric Downtown Pensacola is a charming waterfront neighborhood boasting
dozens of locally owned restaurants, boutiques, cultural museums and art
galleries . Shoppers may choose from fine imported textiles, eclectic home
furnishings, work from local potters, painters and glass artists, unique and
trendy clothing and hand-made jewelry . Visitors can also shop at the local
farmer’s markets; Joe Patti’s Seafood, where they will ship fresh seafood to your
home; and for tasty Southern pecans and sweets, J .W . Renfroe Pecan Company
is a perfect choice .

a public plaza in 1813 . A gazebo at the center of the square is the main feature .
It was constructed for the 1981 Galvez Bicentennial Celebration and dedicated
on May 9 of that year to the memory of Mary Turner Rule Reed, who helped
establish the Seville Square Historic District .
Over the last thirty years, Seville Square has become a community center . A
number of historic buildings, including Old Christ Church and Dorr House, face
