Key Design Concepts and Process

• Key research from Erickson et al

• This grew out of the Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) work at the UNC Chapel Hill

• To identify the vocabulary demands of the Common Core State Standards:− Search grade by grade to determine what specific vocabulary is called out

• To prioritize words for the Academic Core

• Research recommends introducing core words in “steps”

• The Core Steps are small sets of words systematically introduced at each “step” − At each step, words remain in relative position even when new words added

Approaching Core: Use it!

• Point to picture symbols while you are speaking (Using their communication device or a similar system)

• There is no expectation for the AAC user to point to pictures or copy what you are doing

• You are showing them how to communicate with the AAC user’s mode of communication

Providing a Robust AAC Language System

Core Word Strategy• Wide range of word classes (verbs, pronouns, modifiers, prepositions)• Vocabulary that provides language support across communication

environments.• Vocabulary that is not topic specific

Additional Communication Tools need to be Considered• Pre-programmed phrases to support any time / anywhere communication.• Topic specific communication phrases for quick/efficient turn taking.• Keyboards to support great literacy awareness.• Ability to efficiently switch between the communication tools.

Approaching Core: Using it as a Tool

(Wray & Perkins, 2000)

Creative Formulaic

Communication Tools

• Key research Dr. Alison Wray, a Linguist from Oxford

• For efficiency sake we often store things that are common types of constructions in our head in chunks (formulaic) This allows us to be very efficient in conversing and managing language.

• We also need to have a portion of our system that allows for novel generation of language (creative) This lets us be totally novel in our production of language.

“For us (Tobii Dynavox) this resulted in a strategy that caused us to try to somewhat replicate both of these components.”

Engagement: Draw from Verbal Communication

Use novel and formulaic language (Sidtis, 2004, 2012; Altenburg, 1990)

• Novel = combining words for new productions

• Formulaic = memorized chunks of language

Approaching Core: Using it as a Tool

Approaching Core: Use it as a Tool!• Core is a great tool but not the

only tool in a robust language system

• Consider efficiency needs

• Maintain motivation to communication by reducing need to navigate/construct all the time
