Maths from a Different Angle

A Scale model 1:100 of GGSG

We decided to build a model of the school

Data Collectionlots of proper maths to provide measurements:

heights of chimneys, rooftops and the like

First, we found the average size foot, this gave us a ‘unit’ of measurement that we could convert to metres. This enabled us to survey the building and grounds by just walking around

laughing and making notes.

Home made clinometerswe made five from plywood, button thread, small weights (wing nuts)

and some curtain eyes for sights. They worked well and were cheaper than the £119.00 ones on the internet

Something about tangents and co-signs or trigonometry combined with Mr Moore enabled us to collect a lot of data for scale plans, which was our next task

Model making begins scale 1:100

Foam board, map pins, balsa wood, various glues, tape, craft knives and some paint. Can’t be that difficult can it? We had way too much detailed data and needed core

simple measurements of the basic shapes of the key parts of the buildings

It’s started shaping upWhen the detail is painted on and windows are stuck on it starts

looking much better

Staff car parking. At one point real lavender was going to be planted in the quad

Working hard on detail

Confidence grew as results could be seen and buildings painted and work speed increased

GGSG Finished and Looking Good

If your wondering? That’s Mr Moore the maths teacher on the roof of the maths block

Gravesend Grammar School for Girlsan arboretum was made; this was to be a gift from a pupil later in life when they had a

successful career and more money than they knew what to do with

All the school buildings have been included the complicated annex task designation and teamwork has played a significant part of this project

even basic engineering construction. Imagination also played an important part
