SMART GREEN ISLAND MAKEATHON 2019

From February 20th to 23rd 2019, 7 Tunisian students had the chance to represent their country in the annual “SMART GREEN ISLAND MAKEATHON” in its 4th edition that took place in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain.

Students from all over the world, forming a total of 27 competing teams, from 70 universities worked on challenging and on innovative prototypes tackling topics such as Smart Production, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, Smart Mobility, Green Energy, Smart Farming and Smart Health.

In addition to students, 80 representatives from 40 different companies and institutions took part in the event by joining the participating teams. Representatives interacted with students to help them in creating new products or services.

What is a MAKEATHON?

A “MAKEATHON” is an innovative educational event in which several teams (also from different field of studies) create and develop technological prototypes as well as innovative solutions during a short period of time. The challenges or problems could be provided whether by the sponsored companies or within the participating teams.

The name “MAKEATHON” comes from the combination to “MAKE” and “MARATHON”. It is a special live-event where participants spend several days creating, hacking, developing, designing, and pitching a software or hardware project they have build from scratch.

OUR STORY

After being part of the “SMART GREEN ISLAND MAKEATHON 2019”, we were Inspired and wanted to share our experience with other Tunisian students.

We decided to give Tunisian students the opportunity to be part of a Makeathon and prepare them for the next “SMART GREEN ISLAND MAKEATHON 2020” to be held in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain.

SMART GREEN TUNISIA MAKEATHON:

The Concept

Context: Digital Tunisia 2020

To be part of the “4th Industrial Revolution”, Tunisia developed a strategic five-year plan called “TUNISIA DIGITAL 2020” targeting ITC (Information and Technology of Communication) in order to significantly increase employment and export earnings.

This strategy aims to make Tunisia an international digital reference while adding value and improving business competitiveness.

SMART GREEN TUNISIA MAKEATHON

Our goal is to join forces and be a part of this strategic plan by creating a special network and an open space for creativity and innovation. We believe that young innovative students have the determination and required skills to support the objective of Tunisia’s industrial growth.

A "SMART GREEN TUNISIA MAKEATHON” could play an important role, which provides an open innovation space and a network community where Tunisian as well as international companies can meet with local and international students to present their challenges and share their expertise.

Furthermore, participating students could create and develop innovative solutions as well as prototypes regarding the requested challenges.

SMART GREEN TUNISIA MAKEATHON:

The 1st edition

Our main objective is to gather more than 50 Tunisian participants around the SMART GREEN TUNISIA MAKEATHON, in addition to 10 international students.

The event will be a 4-day challenge and we plan to invite companies, institutions and universities from Germany as strategic partners for the event.

Having students at the core of the experience makes it crucial that the participation fees are moderate. Additionally to that, we aim at sponsoring the winner team to participate at the next “SMART GREEN ISLAND MAKEATHON 2020” in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain.

Date and duration

The 1st edition of the SMART GREEN TUNISIA MAKEATHON is planned to take place from the 21st to the 24th of September 2019 to meet the Back-to- school season. It will take place at Laico hotel in Tunis, Tunisia.

Challenges and topics

CHALLENGES and missions will be DESIGNED in COLLABORATION with our SPONSORS and universities in order to match both current industrial trends and needs on one hand, and participants’ technical expertise and skills on the other hand.

Furthermore, we aim to create a collaborative environment gathering Tunisian startups as well as companies with ties to the following fields:

Challenges and topics

Challenge aside, we would like to include cultural activities within the event’s agenda. We are planning to organize a cultural tour through Tunisia concluding a network evening with our partners, guests and sponsors.
