In fact, themakers of OTR tires can hardly keep up – which is leadingto serious shortages.

OTR tires are essential equipment in industries such asmining, construction, forestry, and agriculture. A great many operations depend on them, and delays due to defective tires represent a major loss of revenue. As a result, companies are always on the look-out for tougher, longer-lasting OTR tires. Teijin Aramid’s high performance aramid fiber Twaron is helping to address these issues, and meet the industry’s specific requirements.

Key benefits when using Twaron• Less reinforcing material needed• Improved puncture resistance• Saving on natural rubber• Less heat build-up• Lighter weight• No corrosion

Twaron: reinforcing and protecting tiresMajor tire producers are increasingly using Twaronpara-aramid in their customized and high-added-valueapplications. Twaron’s superior strength-to-weightratio makes it ideal for reinforcing and protectinghigh-performance passenger car tires, motorcycle tires, aircraft tires, bicycle tires – and, of course, OTR tires.

High strength, high modulus, low weightThe comparison between the different reinforcingmaterials based on mass can be seen below.

Twaron for belt reinforcement in mining andearth-moving radialsThe belts used in mining and earth-moving radials arenormally reinforced with many layers of steel cord, andextra natural rubber (NR) is incorporated in the undertreadarea to provide additional resistance against cuts andpunctures. The danger is that, if a cut reaches the layers ofsteel, moisture may penetrate inside the tire, leading tocorrosion, and eventually tire break-down.

Twaron cords can be used to replace the upper layers ofsteel-cord belt reinforcements. The benefits of this are:• the Twaron layer(s) will protect against cuts and punctures of sharp objects• unlike steel, Twaron doesn’t corrode• the amount of extra rubber in the undertread and side wall can be reduced, cutting production costs• less NR mass means less heat build-up• reduced overall tire weight results in less fuel consumption.

Twaron for agricultural and forestry tiresTwaron anti-puncture belts (breakers) are already beingused in certain bias forestry tires. Twaron can also be usedin the carcass of these forestry tires, replacing many layersof polyamide (PA 6.6) reinforcement.

The belt of agricultural radials typically feature up to sixlayers of PA 6.6 cord reinforcements. With Twaron, however, thanks to its superior physical properties, thenumber of reinforcement layers can be reduced only totwo or three layers.

The benefits of having fewer reinforcing layers in agriculturaland forestry tires are:• savings on NR and less reinforcing material needed• lower production costs, due to savings on raw materials, and calendaring• greater puncture resistance• lower fuel consumption due to reduced overall tire weight• flexible foot-print enables lower air pressure to be used in swampy areas.
