Gothenburg is a modern city, but has managed to retain much of its small-town charm. Today, the city is an important Scandinavian hub for logistics, innovation and research. Architecture and design play leading roles, and the life sciences and communications cluster is an increasingly prominent feature of trade and industry.

Gothenburg offers plenty of opportunities to interact with others. You may want to seek out the laid-back atmosphere of one of the city’s hundreds of cafés and pubs, or the buzz of the annual film festival or the big music festivals.

The combination of an extensive range of cultural events and lively student life offers endless alternatives for filling your free time with a variety of different experiences. And all within walking distance.

Gothenburg is big enough to be exciting and challenging, but small enough to feel friendly and intimate.

Sweden is known for its natural beauty, with its forests and archipelagos, sea, coast, light and space. In Sweden, nature is something that everyone knows about and everyone can enjoy.

It’s not just nature that features a sense of freedom and space – the same values are part of Swedish society. Equality is a matter of course. Titles are a thing of the past. Swedish society is open and relax-ed, and flat organisations are a feature of both industry and academia.

Many industries are in need of the innovative research that the university contributes. The University of Gothenburg has a long tradition of collaboration with companies of all sizes within the region. As a student, you will frequently be able to put your studies and theoretical knowledge into practice.

Medicine and bioengineering are the industries currently showing the fastest growth here in Gothenburg, and many bioengineering companies originate from the university’s cutting-edge research.

Gothenburg is Scandinavia’s largest port, with a great concentration of shipping and logistics companies. The region also has a strong automotive tradition, with a large number of highly skilled suppliers. In recent years, fashion, design and game development have also grown into mature industries.

lan yanGAge: 27 years.Favourite place: The harbour sea view in the summer.

“There’s more teamwork in Sweden than in China. You come into close contact with industry, and the education is closely related to reality. This is particularly true of Gothenburg – I’ve also studied at other places in Sweden, where the teaching was more theoretical.”

Lan Yang is currently partway through her third year in Sweden, and is studying for a master’s degree in Business Creation and Entrepreneurship in Biomedicine. She’s very pleased to be in Sweden, a country that she sees as a secure place where there is a pleasant, respectful atmos-phere between people.

During her time here, she has grown very fond of Gothenburg. “This is a lovely city, not too big. You can get from one end of the city to the other without it taking hours. And the summers here are wonderful!”

inGibjörG Áskelsdóttir

Age: 34 years.Favourite place: The woods and lakes around Härlanda tjärn and Delsjön.

“I’ve enjoyed my course in Sweden enormously. Clear communication and freedom of expression have been strongly encouraged. I have previously studied in other Euro-pean countries, and I feel that the quality of the education I’m receiving here is higher and the relationship with the tutors is on more of an equal basis.”

Ingibjörg Áskelsdóttir came to Sweden with her husband and two young children just over a year ago. She is studying for a master’s degree in International Museum Studies, and chose to study in Sweden mostly because she spent four years here as a child. Ingibjörg believes that education in Sweden is of a high class, and she was delighted to find that her course was available in Gothenburg.

“Overall, I found the course to be of a high quality. The student group was highly professional as well as being very international, which added a great deal of value to the course. It’s important to have different values and points of view within the class.”

Ingibjörg and her family are currently in Cape Town, South Africa, where she is completing a 3 ½ month-long exchange.

“It was an excellent opportunity for me and my family to come and spend some time in sunny Cape Town. But oh, how I miss so many things in Sweden! The safety, the simplicity, the woods, the schools… Sweden is great!”

samUel mWaniki

Age: 33 years.Favourite place: Universeum Science Center, with its giant aquarium, hot and humid rainforest and puzzles.

“The University of Gothenburg offers the best education on climate change and global warming, with a great deal of variation and inte-gration between courses and practical work.”

This is the opinion of Samuel Mwaniki from Kenya, who has been in Sweden for almost a year and a half. He is studying for a master’s degree in Atmospheric Science.

Samuel’s first experience of Sweden was through a Sida (the Swe-dish International Development Cooperation Agency) project in Kenya, and he knew that Sweden had good environmental legisla-tion and offered excellent education within the field.

“Masters students in Sweden enjoy an extremely flexible education. You can choose for yourself which courses to study, and when. You can even follow certain courses at other universities. This ensures broad experience, as well as contact with a large number of institutions.”

The biggest surprise for Samuel was the weather in Sweden. “I’d read about snow in books, but that just doesn’t compare with actually experiencing it for the first time. It was so exciting!”
