Jake Hartge Varsity Singers Period 6 Carousel at the Lyric Opera On April 24th, I went downtown to Chicago to see Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. The production was huge, with a spinning Carousel, a huge 20foot pier, and massive backdrops. The show lasted a little longer than 3 hours, including the intermission. It starred all New York/Metropolitan Opera stars, including: Laura Osnes, Steven Pasquale, and Denyce Graves. Laura Osnes, who starred as Julie Jordan, was outstanding. Her tone was very disneyesque, with her falsetto and her full voice so indistinguishable it made her range sound huge. It comes as no surprise that she sings like a disney princess, especially because of her role in Cinderella on Broadway. Her tone was warm when there was a fasttempoed song, while her tone switched to extremely rich and dark during her ballad after her costar, Steven Pasquale, dies (“You’ll Never Walk Alone”). Steven’s voice stayed consistent the whole show. His tone was very nonchalant, as his body language also showed. His soft palate was obviously lifted throughout the show, because he had warm, open vowels even when his mouth was barely open. Denyce Graves, having came from the Metropolitan Opera, is a whole different story. Her vowel placement was farther back than her costars, and her vowels were huge, so big at times, the words she was singing were indistinguishable. Each star had vowel placement and tone that fit the character and mood they were/were in.
