While historically, only 8% of people in our communities go to college, MRNY’s Student Success Center helped 80% of graduating seniors at four Bushwick high schools to apply to college.
MRNY mobilized 2,100 members—the largest delegation from New York City—to travel to Washington, DC for a historic march for immigration reform drawing more than 200,000 people.
After MRNY’s research uncovered systematic discrimination, with help from the New York State Attorney General, MRNY won a campaign to require more than 60 stores at American Eagle Outfitters to revise their policies to ensure equal employment opportunities and respectful treatment for transgender employees.
MRNY’s youth members and allies organized to pass the Student Safety Act, which establishes transparency on school discipline policies, protecting the safety and dignity of New York’s 1.1 million public school students.
Until 2010, New York City tenants had been unable to determine who actually owns the buildings where they live, making it impossible to confront dangerous housing code violations affecting their families. In 2010, MRNY spearheaded the passage of the Multiple Dwellings Registration Act which mandates transparency for hundreds of thousands of tenants and ends impunity for lawless landlords.
In 2010, 1,650 individuals and small business members joined our organization.
Our Workforce Development program placed 112 individuals in jobs with an average wage of $12.50, provided job readiness training to 670 individuals, and quality oneonone employment counseling to 381 job seekers.
At our first annual Walk for Justice walkathon, 300 lowincome members raised $50,000 to support our communities.

Before 2010, unscrupulous employers illegally withheld nearly $1 billion from lowwage workers in New York City every year. Now, MRNY’s Wage Theft Prevention Act protects hundreds of thousands of workers statewide and disincentivizes the widespread practice of wage theft.
MRNY helped more than
1400 adult students to
learn English, develop
literacy and computer
skills, earn a GED, or
become citizens.
MRNY launched and enrolled more than 200 members in Fuerza Cooperativa (Cooperative Strength), a unique partnership with the Brooklyn Cooperative Federal Credit Union. Through Fuerza Cooperativa, MRNY members can receive nonpredatory loans, build their credit, and access financial counseling and a range of essential banking services previously unavailable for families and small businesses in NYC’s immigrant and underbanked neighborhoods. Fuerza Cooperativa also enables members to pay their Make the Road membership dues, building the financial stability of our organization.
MRNY provided critical legal services to 2,900 households, helping to prevent evictions, preserve key income supports, access health care, apply for citizenship, and fight wage theft.
MRNY connected 2,045 people to public health insurance, provided health workshops to over 1,000 people and conducted an HIV peer education program reaching more than 2,000 community members with HIV testing, prevention information, and other health resources.
MRNY’s student leaders and allies won our campaign to stop the
proposed elimination of free student Metrocards, ensuring free
school transportation for 500,000 NYC students and protecting
lowincome families from unjust financial burden.
For over 14 years, MRNY’s Workplace Justice Project has organized thousands
of workers in low wage industries to stand up for their rights and has won
tens of millions of dollars in back wages and damages for aggrieved workers
through legal action.
In particular, MRNY combats wage theft—the nonpayment or underpayment
of minimum and overtime wages—which is rampant throughout the U.S.
In NYC alone, unscrupulous employers steal $1 billion each year from the
paychecks of low-wage and immigrant workers. In New York, penalties for
wage theft, and the chance of being caught, were so low that it created a
perverse incentive to steal workers’ wages. Specifically, it was cheaper to
violate the law, even if an employer was eventually caught and fined the
maximum penalties, than to pay workers the legal amount in the first place.
On December 13, 2010, in a stunning victory for workers across the state,
Governor David Paterson signed into law the Wage Theft Prevention Act—
historic and sweeping legislation that finally makes New York a leader in the
fight to eradicate wage theft. The law mandates harsh fines for employers
who flout the law, protects workers who stand up for their rights, and will
actually deliver workers the money they are owed. This hard-won victory
culminates years of organizing, legal action and research by MRNY members
and our labor, legal, community, and small business allies.

Augusto Fernandez joined MRNY’s Workplace Justice Project in 2000, when he was fired from his job as a residential apartment building superintendent. The reason? He was Latino. MRNY’s Legal Team helped him bring a successful suit against his employer, and Augusto quickly became a leader of the Project, helping to organize and educate other workers who were facing exploitation on the job.
“I have always worked to fight against injustice, ever since I was young in Ecuador, and I have the same opportunity with Make the Road New York,” he said.
Augusto saw how his friends, family and fellow MRNY members struggled in jobs where wage theft was the
norm. “When you look at all the service jobs there is no incentive for employers to follow the law,” he said. “People are willing to work for $2 or $3 an hour for demeaning hours with no overtime because they are desperate and they have no power. When a worker speaks up, the employer will threaten them or cut their hours or simply fire the worker.”
Over the last decade, Augusto and the Workplace Justice Project have organized hundreds of successful actions against businesses citywide who were stealing wages. Despite many victories at individual workplaces, Augusto and other MRNY members knew that they needed to change the law in order to fully address wage theft statewide. Together with MRNY’s Legal
Team, they researched and helped write the new law that would become the Wage Theft Prevention Act (WTPA).
When the law passed in December, it was a triumphant moment for Augusto and all of MRNY. “After working so hard and dedicating myself to this fight, it was one of the happiest days of my life,” he said.
Augusto is now leading MRNY’s work to implement the law, training other organizations statewide, sharing our model with other states, teaching businesses about their responsibilities and training the next generation of leaders to uphold workers’ rights and hold employers accountable. “It is an incredible accomplishment. Together, we will make this exploitation history.”

students win transparencY on school policingOn January 6, after three years of advocacy by Make the Road New York’s
youth leaders and allies in the Student Safety Coalition and the Urban Youth
Collaborative, Mayor Bloomberg signed into law the Student Safety Act,
which promotes transparency on school discipline policies, protecting the
safety and dignity of New York’s 1.1 million public school students.
New York City’s 5,200 School Safety Agents comprise the fifth largest
police force in the country. Without transparency, students, parents, and
administrators have been unable to properly examine or dispute disciplinary
actions, preventing any comprehensive study or improvement of school
safety policies.
This new City legislation requires the Department of Education and the NYPD
to regularly report how school discipline and policing policies are affecting
students based on their race, gender, language, grade level and special
education status—thereby helping policymakers, educators and advocates to
develop solutions that work for all students.

MRNY youth member Jaritza Geigel joined the organization when she was 16, after representatives from MRNY’s Youth Power Project came to her classroom to talk about policing in schools.
“Students are being treated like criminals in our schools, getting arrested for mouthing off or handcuffed for something as little as writing on a desk. The punishment does not fit the crime. With students being criminalized at such a young age, for basically doing what kids do, it’s like the schools are just a pipeline to prison.”
Jaritza quickly dove into the work of the Youth Power Project. “I was involved in all the campaigns. It was basically like I lived here.” Jaritza found her passion in helping other students to develop their voice. She
helped to lead workshops and trainings that brought together hundreds of other students to collectively strategize how to make school policies more accountable to them.
From these conversations, the Youth Power Project and our coalition partners developed the legislation that would become the Student Safety Act. Jaritza and her fellow Youth Power members met with numerous members of the City Council and Speaker Christine Quinn in order to get their backing for the new law. They also organized large direct actions and press conferences and gave testimony at hearings to demonstrate why the new law was needed.
“Because they are coming from the police department, Student Safety Agents don’t
always have the appropriate training to deal with youth in a school environment,” Jaritza said. “With the Student Safety Act in place, all disciplinary actions become public record, and the city has to be accountable for what is happening to students in our schools.”
When the Student Safety Act passed, Jaritza and her peers were thrilled that their years of hard work paid off. “Young people really were able to see their own power and feel a sense of accomplishment,” she said. “It was really important for me, learning how to break down these complex problems and be able to address the root causes—and then to turn around and help other youth to do the same thing. I am really proud of my work and our work as an organization.”
