When she can, singer-songwriter Mel Parsons heads home to recharge, but much of the time she lives out of a suitcase, touring and performing all over the world. Mel’s passion is music, telling stories through song, reaching out to and drawing her audience in. And judging by the lush sounds and lyricism of her latest album Drylands (released April 2015), her reputation is set to soar.

Mel was already focused on a career in music when she moved to Auckland in 2002 to do the Diploma in Contemporary Music Performance.

‘MAINZ was brilliant. I still think it’s the number one music performance school in New Zealand. It offers practical, hands-on training, fully grounded in reality.’

She thrived at MAINZ, honing her performance skills, starting to build a repertoire of original songs, learning from and alongside like-minded people.

‘One of the most valuable things about studying at MAINZ is the connections you make. The tutors also work in the industry, they live the experience, and the friends you make are the people you’re in business with.’

Mel’s followed her dream and life is good.

‘I feel very, very fortunate to be able to make it work.’

‘I’d encourage anyone with a love of music to prepare themselves at MAINZ.’

‘Fame can happen, but I’m happy in the meantime to be working and performing in the industry I love.’

‘Music is the only thing I ever wanted to do and from the day I signed-up for the MAINZ Foundation programme, I was hooked. Now I’ve graduated from the MAINZ Bachelor of Musical Arts programme and there are so many choices out there for me.’

‘The great thing about the MAINZ degree is that it pushes you to challenge yourself and test your boundaries. Some areas were more challenging for me than others, but

the tutors were fantastic and I learned to become more self-aware and self-directed.’

‘The portfolio project we had to produce as part of the degree was a real learning curve. It helped me explore my music and find a sound and aesthetic that works for me. I now feel incredibly prepared for the music industry – whatever that brings.’

‘Being on stage and losing myself in the music is what I love and I’m doing that with my band, Frankie Shake Hands, and through my solo act. I’ve also just finished producing the music for a

short film, Only Humane, and I’m happy with where I’m at. I love the idea of working in or even owning a record store one day, and performing in my spare time. There’s something about record stores that you’ll never get from streaming music – it’s a place where people can go and be introduced to all kinds of new sounds that they may never have otherwise encountered. I want to be realistic about my future in the industry, but I’m still really excited about what that means.’

‘I’d encourage anyone with a love of music to

prepare themselves at MAINZ. It gives you a true understanding of the music industry and helps you get ready for the real world. The degree-level courses MAINZ runs now can push you even more; make you delve into your intellectual and philosophical thoughts and enhance your material and writing.’

‘More than anything, I loved MAINZ because it was like a family – once you are in, you stay in. It was like a second home to me and I still find myself dropping in now and then even though my study is finished.’

‘MAINZ opened the door that connected me with the career I was meant to have.’

‘MAINZ opened the door that connected me with the career I was meant to have.’ Rosaria Ferguson is in her element working in the live events scene. As event activator for Gap Filler she’s had a hand in the creative resurgence of Christchurch and as event producer for yoga and lifestyle festival Wanderlust she ensures the day-to-day Down Under operation runs according to plan.

Rosaria started with the Certificate in Live Sound and Event Production, which she describes as key to opening up the industry.

‘It’s an ideal foundation course for event professionals, as you come out with an in-depth understanding of how all aspects of the industry come together to create an event.’

Her focus was always event management and she took advantage of every available opportunity. ‘I went into it with the idea to put my hand up for everything, get all the work experience I could.’

And after finishing at MAINZ, Rosaria decided to combine freelance work with further study and completed a degree at CPIT.

MAINZ made it happen. ‘It was amazing. It’s such a good course. It’s only a year, but it opened up a whole new pathway for life.’

TAI POUTINI POLYTECHNIC

ABOUT TPP

Tai Poutini Polytechnic (TPP) is the only Institute of Technology (or Polytechnic) on the West Coast of the South Island and the main tertiary education provider in the region. Its main aim is to support education and higher-level learning on the West Coast, but it also plays an important economic and social role in the community.

Founded in 1989, TPP has grown significantly in the intervening years. Its head office and main campus is in Greymouth, but it has since established learning centres in Westport, Reefton and Hokitika.

TPP also offers a range of niche programmes at learning hubs all over the country, from Auckland to Invercargill. Its specialist trades campuses are in Auckland and Christchurch, as are its MAINZ campuses, and its ski patrol programme is based in Wanaka.

TPP offers a wide variety of vocational education and training programmes across many curriculum areas and offers qualifications from foundation level (Level 1 and 2), up to bachelor degree and graduate diploma level (Level 7).

TPP is known to be an industry leader in outdoor education and experiential leadership programmes. Its strength in this field won international recognition in 2014, as evidenced by the formation of a leadership venture partnership with the Wharton School of Business (University of Pennsylvania, USA). It is also the predominant national provider for building, construction and allied trades industry training, including scaffolding, industrial ropes, rigging and cranes.

There’s always plenty happening at TPP. Here’s some information about just a few of the many programmes available …

ARTS AND CARVING

Jade (Pounamu/ Greenstone) is one of the West Coast’s most treasured resources and has enormous cultural, spiritual and commercial significance. TPP offers New Zealand’s only speciality jade and hard stone carving programmes.

Our Certificate in Jade and Hard Stone Carving (Level 4) provides an introduction to the technical and design aspects of working with jade and other semiprecious stones, while the Diploma in Jade and Hard Stone Carving (Level 5) will refine and extend your skills, allowing for deeper creative exploration and experience.

TRADES

Hands-on learning in modern and well-equipped workshops or on our dedicated building site will prepare you for an apprenticeship in your chosen field. Whether you choose the Certificate in Automotive Trades (Level 3), Certificate in Carpentry (Residential and Commercial) (Level 3) or Certificate in Engineering (Fitting and Turning) (Level 3), our trades training gives you a career advantage.

If something more traditional appeals, our unique Steam School based at Shantytown offers a part-time Certificate in Steam-Powered Vehicles (Level 4). This programme will equip you with skills for working on heritage rail and steam transport.
