Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge

London 2012 Open Weekend

Foundations laid for impressive Football project

A group of five young cyclists from Chantry Middle School completed the Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge over a period of three days. Supported by the Make-a-Move team, the cyclists set off from Workington in high spirits and returned to jubilant scenes at Tynemouth with friends and family all present to congratulate the team as they crossed the finish line. Families in South East Northumberland were set the challenge of complet-ing a short distance run along Newbiggin Promenade as part of the Lon-don 2012 Open Weekend, celebrating one year to go to the Olympics. The weekend was attended by over 700 people and included a Triathlon event, Couple Challenge Swim and a Family Fun Run which was started by Ian Lavery MP. Ashington Netball Development Squad

Ashington Netball Development Squad has now been established for over a year, delivering high quality coaching to girls in years 5-9. Laura Taylor and Alex Hanson have gone on to be selected for Northumberland Netball Satellite Academy. Andy Hewitt (Bothal Middle School) said, “the Net-ball Development Squad has been really successful. It has developed the girl's ability in the sport as well as developing their confidence to play against other teams. Several pupils have even signed up to community clubs as a result of the development training.” For more information please contact Sarah Haigh on 01670 542407.

An ambitious £731,420 project has now started to create new sports facilities at a Northumberland School. The investment provided by The Football Foundation, Northumberland County Council and grassroots football clubs in the area, will be used to construct a full-size, floodlit, third generation, artificial grass pitch at The Blyth School Community College. The state-of the-art facilities will be used by The Blyth School Community College pupils as well as Blyth Town FC, Blyth Rangers FC and Blyth Spartans FC, who col-lectively contributed £4,500 towards the project. All clubs will use the new development to increase their combined number of teams from 56 to 76 over the next five years. This figure will also include a Blyth dis-ability team to be developed in a joint venture by the clubs. The site, on Chase Farm Drive, will be desig-nated primarily for Football, although it will be available for other activities such as Tag Rugby and general fitness training. It is predicted that when building work is complete, later this year, more than 800 local people will use the site every week in addition to 1,300 school children. BVAL will manage the site for club and community use. Nathan Rogerson, Leisure Development Manager said: “We have reached this stage after a huge amount of hard work by all of the partners involved in the project. On behalf of everyone in-volved with the new centre I would like to thank the Northumberland FA for its guidance and the Football Foundation for its grant and continued support.”

Newcastle United Foundation is interested in developing a project that provides free support to commu-nity sports clubs to help them become more enterprising and sustainable. If your club needs help in any of the following areas, increasing revenue, writing business plans, developing policies and procedures, budgeting, marketing, customer service and governance then take part in our survey to help the Foun-dation shape a project that could benefit your sports club and its members.
