Fitness Overview

All of our operational roles arephysical demanding as you will be responsible for the safe movingand handling of both patients and equipment.

It is necessary to ensureprospective recruits have sufficientphysical ability to cope withextreme work demands, as andwhen these occur, and to minimiseboth the health and injury risksknown to occur within lowerfitness groups when regularlyengaged in hard physical work.

Therefore, it is recommend thatyou should start and follow aregular programme of fitnesstraining, which should havecommenced some months beforeapplying for positions within theservice to ensure your fitness levelsare to the standard required.

To do this you may considerundertaking any exercise which is continuous, rhythmical andengages any large muscle groups.Activities such as walking, running, cycling, rowing, swimming, aerobics or circuit training areideal and should be brisk andvigorous enough to leave youslightly breathless and to havebroken out into a sweat.

The programme of training shouldbe started at low intensity andgradually progressed over a periodof weeks as your fitness increases. You should aim to complete 3 - 5sessions per week at this intensity, beginning with 15 - 30 minutesand progressing to longer sessionsas your fitness level increases.

You will find, as you progress, you can extend the duration ofyour exercise periods. Alwaysinclude a gradual warm-up beforevigorous exercise and a cool downafter completion.

These should include gentlemobilisation of the muscles andjoints and some stretches forflexibility. You may wish to mixexercise types for variety, andinclude some form of weighttraining for strength improvement.

It is suggested you consult your GP before staring any exerciseprogramme, especially if you havenot engaged in physical activity for some time, are not used toexercise, or suspect any problems(e.g. heart, joint or muscle), thatmay be made worse by exercise.

Do not exercise if you have, or arerecovering from, colds, flu or fever. If you require specific advice abouttypes of exercise, intensity orduration, seek the assistance of a reputable, qualified fitnesstrainer or health club, explainingyour requirements.
