Last April's PM Asia 2005 confer-ence and exhibition in Shanghaireceived such an enthusiasticreception from all who partici-
pated that, as promised, we will be stag-ing PM Asia 2007, again at the HiltonHotel in Shanghai, right at the heart of theChinese PM industry, from 2 - 4 April nextyear. And with more exhibition spaceavailable the event promises to be betterthan ever.
The aim is to create once again a plat-form for information exchange and tradingbetween the Chinese PM industry and itsinternational counterparts under a bannerof advancing PM technology in Asia.Leading names from international andChinese PM will bring conference dele-gates in-depth "state of the art" reviewsacross ferrous, non-ferrous and hardmaterial applications, backed up by spe-cialist workshops.
China's entry into mainstream globaltrade has changed the balance of worldbusiness with its growing demand for rawmaterials affecting everything from theprice of scrap metal to the cost of power -both essentials of the powder metallurgyindustry.
And as China's automotive businessgrows it is looking for the best and mostcost effective ways of doing things, mak-ing powder metallurgy an attractive optionin an industry that is striving to reduce itsdependence on the import of costly manu-factured sub units for vehicles. With manu-facturing projections of five million vehi-cles plus by 2010, soon it is expected thatChinese automotive exports will grow fromthe current "testing the water" trickle intoand strongly flowing stream.
And in hard materials China is nolonger just the possessor of majorreserves of raw materials such as tung-
sten; it is demonstrating a real and grow-ing expertise in handling the reservesavailable and manufacturing high-qualitytooling. Once again, it is PM methodologythat enables these technical advances andthe very substantial profits that go withthem to be made.
The auto and motorcycle industries, ofcourse, are not alone. The engineeringmachinery and textile industries alsorecognise the benefits PM can bringthrough its ability to slash machinery man-ufacturing costs and, in doing so, have ahuge impact on competitiveness.
As prosperity spreads across thenation and domestic consumption rises, manufacturers in the household, con-sumer and luxury sectors will also recog-nise PM technology's cost-cutting poten-tial for their industries.
The Chinese economy is alreadyranked second in the world after the US
and industry has ramped up production tosatisfy domestic demand and a growingexport market for low-cost products. Themajor international car producers haveinvolvement in vehicle production in Chinaand are encouraging component and sys-tem suppliers to construct local produc-tion and assembly plants. And a numberof international PM companies haveentered into joint ventures or are estab-lishing their own plants. Powder produc-ers are following suit to cater for growth inthe region.
PM Asia 2007's three-day conferenceand exhibition will provide an opportunityfor the meeting of minds from the Chineseand international PM communities to theirmutual advantage in the vibrant atmos-phere of Shanghai, China's leading busi-ness city at the heart of the country's PMbusiness.
