L ast April's PM Asia 2005 confer- ence and exhibition in Shanghai received such an enthusiastic reception from all who partici- pated that, as promised, we will be stag- ing PM Asia 2007, again at the Hilton Hotel in Shanghai, right at the heart of the Chinese PM industry, from 2 - 4 April next year. And with more exhibition space available the event promises to be better than ever. The aim is to create once again a plat- form for information exchange and trading between the Chinese PM industry and its international counterparts under a banner of advancing PM technology in Asia. Leading names from international and Chinese PM will bring conference dele- gates in-depth "state of the art" reviews across ferrous, non-ferrous and hard material applications, backed up by spe- cialist workshops. China's entry into mainstream global trade has changed the balance of world business with its growing demand for raw materials affecting everything from the price of scrap metal to the cost of power - both essentials of the powder metallurgy industry. And as China's automotive business grows it is looking for the best and most cost effective ways of doing things, mak- ing powder metallurgy an attractive option in an industry that is striving to reduce its dependence on the import of costly manu- factured sub units for vehicles. With manu- facturing projections of five million vehi- cles plus by 2010, soon it is expected that Chinese automotive exports will grow from the current "testing the water" trickle into and strongly flowing stream. And in hard materials China is no longer just the possessor of major reserves of raw materials such as tung- sten; it is demonstrating a real and grow- ing expertise in handling the reserves available and manufacturing high-quality tooling. Once again, it is PM methodology that enables these technical advances and the very substantial profits that go with them to be made. The auto and motorcycle industries, of course, are not alone. The engineering machinery and textile industries also recognise the benefits PM can bring through its ability to slash machinery man- ufacturing costs and, in doing so, have a huge impact on competitiveness. As prosperity spreads across the nation and domestic consumption rises, manufacturers in the household, con- sumer and luxury sectors will also recog- nise PM technology's cost-cutting poten- tial for their industries. The Chinese economy is already ranked second in the world after the US and industry has ramped up production to satisfy domestic demand and a growing export market for low-cost products. The major international car producers have involvement in vehicle production in China and are encouraging component and sys- tem suppliers to construct local produc- tion and assembly plants. And a number of international PM companies have entered into joint ventures or are estab- lishing their own plants. Powder produc- ers are following suit to cater for growth in the region.
