international airport located in Kolkata serving the Kolkata metropolitan area. It is

located approximately 17 km (11 mi) from the city center. The airport was earlier known

as Dum Dum Airport before being renamed after Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, a

prominent leader of Indian independence movement. Spread over an area of 2,460 acres

(1,000 ha), Kolkata airport is the largest in eastern India and one of only two international

airports operating in West Bengal, the other being in Bagdogra. It is the fifth busiest

airport of India in terms of passenger traffic and is a major centre for flights to North-East

2. Dakshineswar Kali TempleDakshineswar Kali is a Hindu temple located in Dakshineswar near Kolkata. Situated on

the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, the presiding deity of the temple is Bhavatarini, an

aspect of Kali, meaning, 'She who liberates Her devotees from the ocean of existence i.e.

Saṃsāra'. The temple was built by Rani Rashmoni, a philanthropist and a devotee of Kali

in 1855. The temple is famous for its association with Ramakrishna, a mystic of 19th

Century Bengal.

3. Belur MathBelūr Maṭh or Belur Mutt is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission,

founded by Swami Vivekananda, a chief disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. It is

located on the west bank of Hooghly River, Belur, West Bengal and is one of the

significant institutions in Calcutta. This temple is the heart of the Ramakrishna

Movement. The temple is notable for its architecture that fuses Hindu, Christian and

Islamic motifs as a symbol of unity of all religions. belurmath.org

4. New Town Eco ParkNew Town Eco Park (officially Prakriti Tirtha) is an urban park in Rajarhat, Kolkata. The

park is situated on a 480 acres (190 ha) plot and will surround a 104 acres (42 ha)

waterbody with an island in the middle. The park has been divided into three broad parts:

1) Ecological zones like wetlands, grasslands, and urban forest,

2) Theme gardens and open spaces,

3) Urban recreational spaces.

5. Kolkata Town HallKolkata Town Hall in Roman Doric style, was built in 1813 by the architect and engineer

Maj.-Gen. John Garstin (1756-1820) with a fund of 700,000 Rupees raised from a lottery to

provide the Europeans with a place for social gatherings. The town hall was featured on

the 6th leg of The Amazing Race 18, when the teams had to compete in a tea-drinking

6. Pareshnath Jain TemplePareshnath Jain temple is a very famous temple of Calcutta that was built by an art

connoisseur named Ray Badridas Bahadur in 1867. Located in the northeast side of the

city, Calcutta Pareshnath Jain temple is a mind-blowing place of worship, the beauty of

which is enhanced by mirrors and colored stones. It houses four different temples, out of

which the main temple is established in the honor of the 10th Jain Avtaar, Sri Sital Nath Ji.

There is a small stream over there, which is covered by gorgeous flowers on all sides.

Pareshnath Jain temple of Kolkata also contains a cozy greeting room and a museum. It is

a splendid edifice that consists of mirror inlaid pillars and its windows are made from

stained glass. Floral designs further adorn the marble flooring. It also has a garden that

contains the blocks of glass mosaics and awesome European statues. In a nutshell, it can

be said that it's a must visit tourist attraction religious destination.

7. Shobhabazar RajbariShobhabazar Rajbari (Shobhabazar Royal Palace) is the palace of the Shobhabazar royal

family located in the Indian city of Kolkata. Raja Nabakrishna Deb (1737–97), founder of

the Shobhabazar Rajbari, started life modestly but soon amassed considerable wealth in

his service to the British, in particular by his role in assisting to topple Siraj ud-Daulah.

During his lifetime Raja Nabakrishna Deb built two houses. The building at 33 Raja

Nabakrishna Street (known as Choto Shobhabazar Rajbari), on the northern side of the

road, was the one first constructed by him, subsequently given over by him to his adopted

son Gopimohan. The house at 36 Raja Nabakrishna Street (known as Baro Shobhabazar

Rajbari) was built by him when a son was born to him later in life and was left to his

8. KumartuliKumortuli (also spelt Kumartuli, or the archaic spelling Coomartolly) is a traditionally

potters’ quarter in northern Kolkata, the capital of the east Indian state of West Bengal.

By virtue of their artistic productions these potters have moved from obscurity to

prominence. This Kolkata neighbourhood, not only supplies clay idols of Hindu gods and

goddesses to barowari pujas in Kolkata and its neighbourhoods, but a number of idols are

exported. It is one of the seven wonders in Kolkata.

9. Swami Vivekananda's Ancestral House Ramakrishna Mission Swami Vivekananda's Ancestral House and Cultural Centre is amuseum and cultural centre. It is located at 3, Gourmohan Mukherjee Street, Kolkata. Inthis house, Swami Vivekananda (then called Narendranath Datta) was born on 12 January1863. 10. The Marble PalaceThe Marble Palace (Kolkata), located at 46,Muktaram Babu Street, Kolkata 700007, is a

palatial mansion located in North Kolkata, India, which was built by Raja Rajendra Mullick

in 1835 and contains many beautiful Western sculptures, pieces of Victorian furniture, and

paintings by European and Indian artists. Large chandeliers, clocks, and busts of kings and

queens decorate the hallways of the palace. It is famous for marble wall & floors,

antiques, paintings by Rubens, curios, marble statues, floor to ceiling mirrors and for its

collection of rare birds. Marble Palace is still resided in. Entrance is restricted and

permission must be obtained from the government tourist office.

Located next to the palace is the Marble Palace Zoo, which was the first zoo opened in

India, also by Raja Rajendra Mullick. It now primarily serves as an aviary, including

peacocks, toucans, storks, and cranes.

11. Jorasanko Thakur BariThe Jorasanko Thakur Bari in Jorasanko, north of Kolkata, is the ancestral home of the

Tagore family. It is currently located on the Rabindra Bharati University campus at 6/4

Dwarakanath Tagore Lane Jorasanko, Kolkata 700007. It is the house in which the poet

and first non-European Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore was born. It is also the place

where he spent most of his childhood and died on 7 August 1941. Information

12. Howrah BridgeThe Howrah Bridge, is a cantilever bridge with a suspended span over the Hooghly River in

West Bengal, India. Commissioned in 1943, the bridge was originally named the New

Howrah Bridge, because it replaced a pontoon bridge at the same location linking the two

cities of Howrah and Kolkata. On 14 June 1965 it was renamed Rabindra Setu, after the

great Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, who was the first Indian and Asian Nobel

13. Howrah Railway StationHowrah railway station is the oldest station and largest railway complex in India. It is one

of the four intercity railway stations serving the city of Kolkata, the others being Sealdah

Station, Shalimar Station and Kolkata railway station. The terminal station is located on

the west bank of the Hooghly River, linked to Kolkata by Howrah Bridge. With 23

platforms, it has the highest train-handling capacity of any railway station in India; and is

one of the busiest railway stations in terms of passenger volume per day.

14. Nakhoda MasjidThe Nakhoda Masjid is the principal mosque of Kolkata, in the Chitpur area of the

Burrabazar business district in Central Kolkata, at the intersection of Zakariya Street and

Rabindra Sarani. The mosque was built as an imitation of the mausoleum of Mughal

Emperor Akbar at Sikandra, Agra by Kutchi Memon Jamat, a small community of Sunni

Muslim community from Kutch. Abdur Rahim Osman, a leader of the Kutchi Memon

Jama'at, who funded the building was a shipping prince: The mosque was named Nakhoda

meaning Mariner. The foundation stone was laid on 11 September 1926.

15. Writers' BuildingThe Writers' Building, often shortened to just Writers', is the secretariat

building of the State Government of West Bengal in India. The Writers'

Building originally served as the office for writers of the British East India

Company, hence the name. Designed by Thomas Lyon in 1777, the

Writers' Building has gone through several extensions over the years.

16. Millennium Park Millennium Park is a public park in Kolkata, situated along the Strand Road on eastern

shore of Hooghly River for a stretch of 2.5 km near Babughat and opposite to Koilaghat.

The park consists of landscaped gardens and children's amusement rides. It was opened

along the riverside to provide a green area for Kolkata's polluted waterway. It is a

millennium gift from Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority inaugurated on 26

December 1999. The park is part of the first phases of the Kolkata Riverside Beautification

Project. The park is open from 11am-8pm.

17. St. John's ChurchSt. John’s Church, originally a cathedral, was among the first public buildings erected by

the East India Company after Kolkata became the effective capital of British India. Located

at the North – Western corner of Raj Bhavan construction of the St. John’s Church started

in 1784, with Rs 30,000 raised through a public lottery, and was completed in 1787. St.

John’s Church is the third oldest church in Kolkata only next to the Armenian and the Old

Mission Church. St. John’s Church served as the Anglican Cathedral of Calcutta (Kolkata)

till 1847 when it was transferred to St. Paul’s Cathedral. St. John's Church was modeled

according to the St Martin-in-the-Fields of London.

18. Eden GardensEden Gardens is a cricket ground in Kolkata, India. It is the home of the Bengal cricket

team and the Indian Premier League's Kolkata Knight Riders, as well as being a venue for

Test, One Day International and Twenty20 International matches. The second largest

cricket stadium in India by seating capacity, it is widely acknowledged to be one of the

most iconic cricket stadiums in the world. Eden Gardens has been called "cricket's answer

to the Colosseum”.

19. Shaheed MinarThe Shaheed Minar (English: Martyrs' Monument), formerly known as the Ochterlony

Monument, is a monument in Kolkata that was erected in 1828 in memory of Major-

general Sir David Ochterlony, commander of the British East India Company, to

commemorate both his successful defense of Delhi against the Marathas in 1804 and the

victory of the East India Company’s armed forces over the Gurkhas in the Anglo-Nepalese

War. The monument was constructed in his memory. It was designed by J.P. Parker and

paid for from public funds. In August 1969, it was rededicated to the memory of the

martyrs of the Indian freedom movement and hence renamed the "Shahid Minar," which

means "martyrs monument" in both Bengali and Hindi, by the then United Front

Government in memory of the martyrs of the Indian independence movement. The

present government has decided to illuminate the tower during evenings and allow

visitors to the top. The monument is situated on the ‘Maidan’.

20. Indian MuseumThe Indian Museum is the largest and oldest museum in India and has rare collections of

antiques, armour and ornaments, fossils, skeletons, mummies, and Mughal paintings. It

was founded by the Asiatic Society of Bengal in Kolkata (Calcutta), India, in 1814. The

founder curator was Dr Nathaniel Wallich, a Danish botanist. It has six sections comprising

thirty five galleries of cultural and scientific artifacts namely Art, Archaeology,

Anthropology, Geology, Zoology and Economic Botany. This multipurpose Institution with

multidisciplinary activities is being included as an Institute of national importance in the

seventh schedule of the Constitution of India. It is one of oldest museums in the world.

This is an autonomous organization under Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

21. Government College of Art & CraftThe Government College of Art & Craft in Kolkata is one of the oldest Art colleges in India.

It was founded on August 16, 1854 at Garanhata, Chitpur, "with the purpose of

establishing an institution for teaching the youth of all classes, industrial art based on

scientific methods." as the School of Industrial Art. The institute was later renamed as the

Government School of Art and in 1951 it became the Government College of Art & Craft.

22. Mother HouseThe Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity, located at 54A, A.J.C. Bose Road,

Calcutta, is the headquarters of the international religious congregation of the

Missionaries of Charity. It has been home to Mother Teresa and her sisters from February

1953 to the present day. It is here that Mother lived, prayed, worked, and guided her

religious family of sisters spread across the world. It is here that her body was laid to rest.

23. MaidanThe Maidan (literally open field) also referred as Brigade Parade Ground is the largest

urban park in Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is a vast stretch of field and

home to numerous play grounds, including the famous cricketing venue Eden Gardens,

several football stadia, and Kolkata Race Course. Maidan is dotted with statues and pieces

of architecture, most notable being the Victoria Memorial. Due to the freshness and

greenery it provides to the metropolis, it has been referred to as the "lungs of Kolkata".

24 Prinsep GhatPrinsep Ghat is a Ghat built during British Raj, along the river bank of Hooghly and on its

bank on Kolkata side. The Palladian porch in the memory of eminent orientalist James

Prinsep, famous for deciphering the inscriptions of Ashoka, was designed by W. Fitzgerald

and constructed in 1843. It is located between the Water Gate and the St George's Gate of

the Fort William. It was built in 1841 and named after James Prinsep, the Anglo-Indian

scholar and antiquary. The monument rich in Greek and Gothic inlays, was restored by the

state's public works department in November 2001 and has since been well-maintained.

In its initial years, all the royal British entourages used the Prinsep Ghat jetty for

embarkation and disembarkation.

25. Second Hooghly Bridge Vidyasagar Setu, also known as the Second Hooghly Bridge, is a toll bridge over the

Hooghly River in West Bengal linking the cities of Kolkata and Howrah. With a total length

of 823 metres (2,700 ft), Vidyasagar Setu is the longest cable–stayed bridge in India and

one of the longest in Asia. It was the second major bridge to be built across the Hooghly

River; the first, the Howrah Bridge (also known as Rabindra Setu) 3.7 kilometres (2.3 mi)

to the north, was completed in 1943. Named after the educationist reformer Pandit

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, it cost Indian Rupees 3.88 billion to build.

26. Botanical GardensThe Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden (previously known as Indian

Botanic Garden) is situated in Shibpur, Howrah near Kolkata. They are commonly known

as the Calcutta Botanical Garden, and previously as the Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta.

The gardens exhibit a wide variety of rare plants and a total collection of over 12,000

specimens spread over 109 hectares. It is under Botanical Survey of India (BSI) of Ministry

of Environment and Forests, Government of India.

The best-known landmark of the garden is The Great Banyan, an enormous banyan tree

(Ficus benghalensis) that is reckoned to be the largest tree in the world, at more than 330

metres in circumference. They are also famous for their enormous collections of orchids,

27. Calcutta Race CourseThe history of racing in Calcutta goes back to the days of Warren Hastings, the Governor-

General, when races were usually held outside Calcutta. Built in the 1820s, the Calcutta

Race Course is one of the largest race courses in the country and is maintained y the Royal

Calcutta Turf Club. Racing season is from July to September and November to March.

28. Calcutta Polo ClubCalcutta Polo Club is a polo club located in Kolkata. It was established in 1862 and is

considered as the oldest polo club of the world which is still in existence. The club

provides advanced professional training in polo to aspiring professionals and amateurs.

Members can keep their own horses in the club stables, or can book or use any of the

horses available in the club.

29. Alipore ZooThe Alipore Zoological Gardens (also informally called the Alipore Zoo, Calcutta Zoo or

Kolkata Zoo) is India's oldest formally stated zoological park (as opposed to royal and

British menageries) and a big tourist attraction in Kolkata. It has been open as a zoo since

1876, and covers 18.81 ha (46.5 acres). It is probably best known as the home of the now

expired Aldabra Giant Tortoise Adwaita, which was reputed to have been over 250 years

old when it died in 2006. It is also home to one of the few captive breeding projects

30. National Library of IndiaThe National Library of India on the Belvedere Estate in Alipore, Kolkata, is the largest

library in India by volume and India's library of public record. It is under the Department

of Culture, Ministry of Tourism & Culture, Government of India. The library is designated

to collect, disseminate and preserve the printed material produced in India. The library is

situated on the scenic 30 acre (120,000 m²) Belvedere Estate. It is the largest in India with

a collection in excess of 2.2 million books. Before independence, it was the official

31. Victoria MemorialThe Victoria Memorial (Victoria Memorial Hall) is a large marble building in Kolkata, West

Bengal, India which was built between 1906 and 1921. It is dedicated to the memory of

Queen Victoria (1819–1901) and is now a museum and tourist destination under the

auspices of the Ministry of Culture. The Memorial lies on the Maidan (grounds) by the

32. Academy of Fine ArtsThe Academy of Fine Arts, in Kolkata is one of the oldest fine arts societies in India. The

academy was formally established in 1933 by Lady Ranu Mukherjee. It was initially

located in a room loaned by the Indian Museum, and the annual exhibitions used to take

place in the adjoining verandah. There are some famous paintings here like Saat bhai

champa by Gaganendranath Tagore, Shiva with Ganesh by Jamini Roy.

33. St. Paul's CathedralSt. Paul's Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral of the Church of North India - a united church

which is part of the Anglican Communion - in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It is the seat of

the Diocese of Calcutta, and the incumbent bishop is the Rt. Revd. Ashoke Biswas. The

building itself stands on the "island of attractions" in Kolkata - beside the Victoria

Memorial, Nandan, Rabindra Sadan theatre complex, and the Birla Planetarium.

34. Birla PlanetariumThe Birla Planetarium in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, is a single-storeyed circular structure

designed in the typical Indian style, whose architecture is loosely styled on the Buddhist

Stupa at Sanchi. Situated at Chowringhee Road adjacent to the Victoria Memorial, St.

Paul's Cathedral, and the Maidan in South Kolkata, it is the largest planetarium in Asia

and the second largest planetarium in the world. There are two other Birla Planetariums

in India: B.M. Birla Planetarium in Chennai and the Birla Planetarium in Hyderabad.

35. ISCKON KolkataThe International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), popularly known as the

Hare Krsna movement, is a worldwide association of devotees of Krsna, the Supreme

Personality of Godhead. God is known by many names, according to His different qualities

and activities. In the Bible he is know as Jehovah (“the almighty one”), in the Koran as

Allah (“the great one”), and in the Bhagavad-gita as Krsna, a Sanskrit name meaning “the

all-attractive one”. The movement’s main purpose is to promote the wellbeing of human

society by teaching the science of God consciousness according to the timeless Vedic

36. Birla Industrial & Technological MuseumBirla Industrial Museum or Birla Industrial and Technological Museum is situated at 19A,

Gurusaday Road in South Kolkata. Birla Industrial Museum of Kolkata was founded in

1956. It was initiated by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The basic

objective of the museum is to evoke the thirst for science and a concept of technology

37. Birla MandirBirla Mandir in Kolkata, India, is a Hindu temple on Ashutosh Chowdhury Avenue,

Ballygunge, built by the industrialist Birla family. This temple is open in the morning from

5.30 A.M. to 11 A.M. and in the evening from 4 .30 P.M. to 9 P.M. The construction of the

temple began in 1970. It took 26 years to complete the entire structure.

38. Kalighat Kali TempleKalighat Kali Temple is a Hindu temple in West Bengal, India

dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali. Kalighat was a Ghat (landing

stage) sacred to Kali on the old course of the Hooghly river in the

city of Calcutta. The name Calcutta is said to have been derived

from the word Kalighat. The river over a period of time has moved

away from the temple. The temple is now on the banks of a small

canal called Adi Ganga which connects to the Hoogly. The Adi Ganga

was the original course of the river Hoogly (the Ganges). Hence the

name Adi (original) Ganges.

39. Rabindra SarobarRabindra Sarobar (previously known as Dhakuria Lake) is an artificial lake in south Kolkata

in the Indian state of West Bengal. An artificial lake that was created in the 1920s to

provide soil for filling up the low lying areas of Ballygunge that were being made habitable

by the Calcutta Improvement Trust. Currently it is the breathing ground for South Calcutta

and frequented by morning walkers. Excellent bio-diversity with a wide range of flora and

fauna. There are a number of rowing clubs namely Bengal Rowing Club, Lake Club,

Calcutta Rowing Club and the National Rowing Championships are held here. It has very

old swimming clubs one being Indian Life Saving Society (formerly Anderson Club) which

holds annual Water Ballet and Yoga in Water. It has a Lotus pond and Open Air stadium

(Nazrul Manch). It is the largest water body in the Heart of Calcutta. The other half of the

Lake holds a sports stadium too.

40. Kolkata MetroThe Kolkata Metro or Calcutta Metro is a metro system serving the city of Kolkata and the

districts of South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas in the Indian state of West Bengal. It
