The main reason why they have the ability to absorb so much heat is that there is very little land mass at the equator and that is where the sunrays are most direct. One of the most important ways of moving this heated water around the earth is by ocean currents.

Major Ocean Currents • Oceans play a very important role in the weather dynamics of the earth because they are so vast and act as a good heat sink. The main reason why they have the ability to absorb so much heat is that there is very little land mass at the equator and that is where the sunrays are most direct. One of the most important ways of moving this heated water around the earth is by ocean currents.

The oceans have an important effect on Weather dynamics

1. The oceans occupy a large portion of the Earth’s surface. Water’s high heat

capacity will affect weather changes in a given area.

In Newfoundland...

In harbours in Newfoundland cold ocean waters keep regions along the coast cooler than inland, while in  Europe the warmer ocean water keeps coastal regions warmer than inland

2. Since there is a large amount of water at the equator, where the sun is mostdirect, ocean currents act as conveyer belts to transport heat energy around theworld.

The major ocean currents are shown in figure 1 on page 525 of your text. Note thatthe direction of the major ocean currents are similar to the directions of the majorwinds.

• Results of these currents are: • Warmer winters with ice free harbors for many northern countries that are affected by the Gulf Stream. Ex. Altantic harbours • Colder currents from the northern and far southern regions are warmed as they migrate near the equator. Ex. Labrador Current

Causes of Ocean Currents

1. Solar heating of the oceans near the equator sets up convection currents.

This warm water moves away from the equator and towards the poles.

2. Winds across the oceans at the equator the flow from West to East, and the tendency

of the water to be deflected by the Coriolis effect, the currents flow away from the equator.

Further north and south the prevailing winds are East to West  and as

the currents are influenced by the Coriolis effect they flow toward the equator

3.  The salt content affects ocean currents. As water evaporates, sea waterbecomes saltier and sink, setting up deep water convection currents.

1. The Earth's rotation

Eastward rotation of the earth causes the west side currents to flow narrow and

travel at speed of 6.5 km/h

while the currents on the eastern  side are wider and travel at a speed of 1.1 km/h

2.  Shape of the continents

as currents come close  to the continents they are forced to flow along the coastline.

As a result of the movement of ocean waters:  east coast continents have wide, slow ocean currents flowing along the

coastline

while the west coast has narrow, fast ocean currents along the coastline

Effects of Ocean Currents

1. Creation of Rain Forests

Warm currents heat the air above them.   This warm air carries more moisture.  When this warm, moist air blows onshore, large quantities of precipitation often result.

Ex. Southeast Asia and Brazil

2.  Creation of Deserts

Cold currents cool the air above them.  Cold air does not carry much moisture.  This cool, dry air creates dry conditions when it blows onshore.Ex. Peru and west coast of Africa

3.  Moderation of Climate

Coastal areas have cooler summers and milder winters because of the high heat capacity of the ocean.  The ocean takes a long time to cool down and so it is warmer than the land in the fall and winter.  It also takes a long time to heat up so it is colder than the land in the spring and summer.

Warming currents keep harbors free of ice in the winter.

 eg, Ireland, England,, Norway
