Protecting the environment

Natural resources form the basis of our exis-tence on this planet. The objectives of ourpolicy are for these resources to be usedsparingly and in a manner which takes therequirements of both nature and humanityinto account. Our declared policy is integrated environmen-tal protection. This policy starts at the rootcauses and encompasses in its managementdecisions all the consequences for the envi-ronment which could arise from productionprocesses or the products themselves. You too can help to protect the environmentby operating your Mercedes-Benz in an envi-ronmentally responsible manner.

Operating conditions and your individual driv-ing style to a large extent influence fuel con-sumption and the rate of engine, brake, andtire wear. To reduce fuel consumption and therate of wear, please consider the following:Ravoid short trips.Rmake sure that the tire pressures arealways correct.Ravoid frequent, abrupt acceleration.Rdo not carry any unnecessary weight.Rremove ski holders and roof racks once youno longer need them.Rdo not warm up the engine with the vehiclestationary.Rshift gears such that each gear is used onlyup toÔ of its maximum engine speed.Rkeep an eye on the vehicle’s fuel consump-tion.

A regularly serviced vehicle will also help pro-tect the environment. You should adhere tothe maintenance intervals displayed by theASSYST PLUS service interval display, along

i Read the information on qualified special-ist workshops in the hybrid operatinginstructions. Work carried out incorrectlyon the hybrid system or modificationsmade to your vehicle could cause the sys-tems of your vehicle to cease functioningproperly.

Always havemaintenancework on hybrid sys-tem and high-voltage system electronics andcomponents performed by a qualified spe-cialist. We recommend that you use anauthorized Mercedes-Benz Center for thispurpose. If you have any questions about carrying outany type of service, turn to the advice of anauthorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

! Always have maintenance work on hybridsystem and high-voltage system electron-ics and components, such as control mod-ules, sensors and connecting cables, per-formed by a qualified specialist workshopwith the necessary expert knowledge ofHYBRID vehicles and the tools to carry outthe work required, e.g. at an authorizedMercedes-Benz Center. Otherwise there isa danger that vehicle components maywearmore rapidly, whichmay void the vehi-cle’s warranty.

High-voltage battery

G WARNINGIf the housing of the high-voltage battery hasbeen damaged, electrolyte and gases mayleak out. These are poisonous and caustic. There is a risk of injury.Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing.Immediately rinse electrolyte splashes offwith water and seek medical attentionstraight away.

When the pressure inside the high‑voltagebattery exceeds a certain value, for examplein case of a vehicle fire, flammable gas will

escape through a ventilation valve on thevehicle’s underbody. This prevents thehigh‑voltage battery from exploding.

G WARNINGIn the event of a vehicle fire, the internal pres-sure of the high-voltage battery can exceed acritical value. In this case flammable gasescapes through a ventilation valve on theunderbody. The gas can ignite. There is a riskof injury.Leave the danger zone immediately. Securethe danger area at a suitable distance, whilstobserving legal requirements.

Tire rotationYour vehicle’s tires are a critical componentto overall vehicle performance and vehiclestability. The useful life of tires will vary and isproportional to tire type, speed rating, ambi-

ent conditions, tire loading, tire inflation pres-sure, road surfaces, and individual drivingstyle, among other factors. Therefore,Mercedes-Benz recommends regular checksfor wear and proper inflation and, if applicableto your vehicle’s tire configuration, tire rota-tion.Tire rotations can be performed on vehicleswith the same front and rear tire dimensions. If your vehicle is equipped with the same tiredimensions, tires can be rotated by observinga front-to-rear rotation pattern that will main-tain the intended rotation (spinning) directionof the tire (on unidirectional tires, an arrow onthe sidewall indicates the intended rotation orspinning direction of the tire). In some cases, such as when your vehicle is configured withstaggered sizes (different tire sizes, front vs.rear), tire rotations are not possible. If your vehicle’s tire configuration allows fortire rotation, tire rotation should be per-formed in accordancewith the recommendedintervals, or sooner at first signs of irregular(uneven) tread wear. Tire rotation recommen-dationswill likely necessitate a tire rotation atevery Service B based on Mercedes-Benzmaintenance intervals. For your convenience, this MaintenanceBooklet contains a tire rotation confirmationpage on which you can record the date andmileage when tire rotations were performed(Y page 22).

Severe operating conditionsThe maintenance intervals have been deter-mined so that the vehicle, under normal oper-ating conditions, should operate properlybetween maintenance services. Maintaining the level and condition ofthe DEF is part of the regular maintenanceservice work. Under normal driving condi-tions, one tankful of DEF should suffice untilthe next maintenance service.

DEF is a non-flammable, non-toxic, colorlessand odorless, water-soluble liquid.

! Only use DEF complying with ISO 22241.Do not add special additives to DEF and donot dilute DEF with water. Otherwise, theBlueTEC exhaust gas aftertreatment sys-tem could be damaged.

Description of Emission SystemMain-tenance Jobs

The composition of exhaust emissions isinfluenced not only by the special emissioncontrol equipment, but also by various enginecomponents and their adjustments. Therefore, emission system maintenancemust include these engine components. Some maintenance jobs are actually onlytests. They are important however, becausethey allow early detection of discrepancieswhich can later lead to increased exhaustemissions. It is generally less expensive tohave such items adjusted immediately ratherthan allowing them to contribute to costlyrepairs. The maintenance intervals have beendetermined so that the vehicle, under normalconditions, should operate properly betweenservices.

Changing the engine oil and filterChange the engine oil and oil filter accordingto the specified maintenance intervals. If oilconsumption should increase, determine thecause and take necessary corrective steps.Do not reset the ASSYST PLUS service inter-val display if the oil level is adjusted orchanged outside the specified maintenanceintervals.
