A Guide to Recertification of your PMP

Now that youve spent many, many hours reading the PMBOK; doing CBTs;checking out the Q&A tests on C3; planning for your PMP exam and then takingand passing it you will want to ensure that you do not go through this pain againin three years time.

So how do you achieve this? By earning 60 Personal Development Units (PDUs)over a three year period. Its roughly 1 hour of work to get each PDU.

Sounds a simple task after all its 1.66667 PDUs per month but youd besurprised how much PDU cramming takes place in the final few months beforeyour PMP expires . I know that from practical experience!!

So how do you earn PDUs? From 1 st March 2011 the PMI have restructured theirPDU categories. There will be six categories which fall into two divisionsEducation & Giving Back to the Profession.

Whilst this guide is UK Centric a lot of the information is relevant across countryboundaries. Also I am aware that in EMEA Central Region there are several afterwork sessions per year for which you earn PDUs by attending and if you are oneof the speakers you get more. As this happens as virtual sessions, it is aconvenient way to combine getting news & knowledge and earn PDUs. I suspectsimilar things happen in other regions, so any PM should check it out with PMI tosee if it qualifies for PDU earning.

Remember that you can report and claim PDUs in 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75increments.

    Education Categories

Category A : Courses offered by PMIs Registered EducationProviders or Chapters and Communities.

There is no restriction on the number of PDUs that can be earned in thiscategory per cycle.

As you know CSC, in conjunction with Redtray, provide a number of Leader Ledcourses on Project Management. For those in the UK that have not yetcompleted the Project Management Orientation Simulation training (PLOS/PMOS),I would highly recommend you do this after attaining your PMP credential. PMIhave recognised these courses and you can claim 47 PDUs for PLOS and 50 PDUsfor PMOS. Also attending GPM can earn you 24 PDUs.

By attending a PMI community of practice webinar or face-to-face event you can

claim a PDU for 1 hour of instruction when it relates to project management, project risk, project scheduling or project management.

    Category B : Continuing Education

There is no restriction on the number of PDUs that can be earned in thiscategory per cycle.

If you are currently enrolled on an academic course (e.g. Degree) that includesclasses/lectures on Project and/or Programme management then you can claim15 PDUs for a typical 15 week academic session. It is recommended that youclarify with your University or college and the PMI that the amount you can claimis acceptable.

PMI have confirmed that the Skillsoft courses can be claimed in this category. SoLogon to the PM Knowledge Centre via CSC Learning Place and try the CBTs.

A full list of Skillsoft CBTs is in the attached spreadsheet >>PMI_Course_Catalog

    .xls

You can also verify the course on the PMI PDU site by searching for Skillsoft."

    Category C: Self Directed Learning

    However, one of the easier ways to claim PDUs in this category is via Self Directed Learning. You can claim up to 30 PDUs for a number of self-studyactivities including;

Reading project management text books (so give Quentin Flemingstome on Earned Value a try! Zzzzzzz )

A Guide to Recertification of your PMP

Giving Back to the Profession Categories

A maximum of 45 PDUs per cycle can be earned in the following categories.

Category D: Creating New Project Management Knowledge

There are many sub-categories that make collecting PDUs an interesting andeasy pastime!

    Here are a few examples:

Be a member or moderator of a project/program panel at a conference, symposium, etc.

Attendance at your local UK PMI chapter evening meeting gets you 1 PDUor 1 PDU per seminar hour at the regional seminars. I reckon you shouldget extra PDUs to recognise travel time as it typically takes me 4 hoursreturn to get to the London meeting!

Teaching a Project Management course gives you up to 10 PDUs so nowis your chance to volunteer to teach on a PM course!

If you speak at a PMI UK chapter evening meeting or half-day seminar youcan claim 5 PDUs.

Be an author or co-author of an article pertaining to project/programmanagement.10 to 30 PDU's can be earned depending on whether the article ispublished in a non-referred or referred journal.

By presenting on a COP webinar or at a COP event; by blogging on a COPor writing an article for a COP newsletter or posting as a shared documentyou can claim for both the time required to prepare or create theknowledge. You can also claim for the time to present the knowledge.

    Category E: Volunteer Service

Volunteering can be very rewarding I have been a volunteer on the PMI standat the Project Challenge exhibitions at Olympia and Birmingham NEC. PDUawards range from 5 for being a regular volunteer to 10 for being an electedofficial.

You can also act as a coach & mentor to the UK PMI-PMP accreditationprogramme!

A Guide to Recertification of your PMP

Category F: Working as a Professional in Project Management

If you work 1,500 hours a year as a Project or Programme manager you canclaim 5 PDUs per year. So with 3 years at CSC you only need to get 45 morePDUs!

    Do Not forget PDU Carryover

You can take advantage of the opportunity to transfer PDUs from one cycle tothe next. So i f you are a PMP or PgMP credential holder and have earned morethan 60 PDU's in a 3 year period you can transfer up to 20 PDUs earned in thelast year of your current cycle to the next 3 year period .

    And Finally

If you are in any doubt as to the validity of your education related PDU activity Isuggest that you register it with PMI to see if it gets approved. If it does we canmake an announcement to all PPMC members.

The definitive source for recertification and ways to earn PDUs can be found onthe PMI site- here is the link>> http://www.pmi.org/en/Certification/Ways-to-Earn-PDUs.aspx

Please remember to keep any receipts, documentation, course receipts, etc tosupport your PDU submissions just in case you get a PMI audit.
