Career Stats vs. Miami

UMAINE TRAVELS FOR MIAMI THANKSGIVING TOURNAMENT The University of Maine looks to extend its win streak to four when it travels to take on the Hurricanes in the opening round of the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament. Maine will meet the host team on Friday, Nov. 24. Win or lose, Maine will meet Kennesaw State on Sunday, Nov. 26.

A LOOK AT THE BLACK BEARS:UMaine is off to its best start since also beginning the 2013-14 season 3-1. A win against Miami would match Maine’s 4-1 start in 2013-14 and two wins at the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament would match Maine’s best start (5-1) since 2006-07.

The Black Bears have won three straight after a 100-40 victory over UMaine Fort Kent back on Nov. 16. Four Black Bears tallied double-digits in the win, led by Blanca Millan’s 19 points on 9-of-10 shooting in just 11-minutes of action. Kelly Fogarty hit four 3-pointers on her way to a career-high 16 points while Maeve Carroll added a career-best 14 points and a team-high seven boards. Tanesha Sut-ton rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points.

Millan, who has tallied double-figures in each of Maine’s last three games, enters play ranked third in the America East at 19.5 points per game. Millan, who went 12-for-13 from the floor against Harvard and 9-for-10 against UMFK, leads the America East at 63.6% from the field. Millan’s 35 field goals rank sixth in the country while her percentage is good for 37th nationally. Tanesha Sutton leads the America East with 12 steals, ranking third in the league at 3.0 steals per game. Sutton, averaging 10.3 points per game, has also scored double-digits in three of Maine’s first four games and currently leads the Black Bears in rebounding (6.8); seventh best in the league. Freshman Dor Saar is averaging 7.3 points through her first four collegiate games and leads Maine at 3.3 assists per game.

As a team, the Black Bears have been incredibly impressive in ball security through their opening four contests. Maine ranks 10th nationally and tops in the America East with just 11.0 turnovers per game. Defensively, the Black Bears are 14th in the nation and lead the league after allowing just 50.3 points per game. Offensively, the Black Bears have been clicking and lead the America East with 19.0 assists per game while shooting 43.6% from the floor and are averaging 7.3 makes from 3-point range.

SCOUTING MIAMI:The Hurricanes are coming off a 24-9 season in which they reached the postsea-son for the eighth-straight season, advancing to the NCAA Tournament Second Round. Miami returns two starters in seniors Erykah Davenport and Keyanna Harris. The Hurricanes, who opened the season ranked No. 24 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, were selected fifth in the Blue Ribbon Panel ACC Preseason poll.

Miami is coming off a 76-46 win over New Orleans on Tuesday. Erykah Dav-enport led the way with a huge game of 16 points and 19 rebounds. Shaneese Bailey (14) and Mykea Gray (13) joined Davenport in double-figure scoring.

Gray leads the Hurricanes, averaging 17.8 points and 3.0 assists. Davenport is averaging a double-double with 10.8 points and 10.5 rebounds. Miami’s offense is averaging 71.8 points per game. Defensively, Miami is allowing 57.8 points and 11.8 steals, second best in the ACC. Miami has turned the ball over at a high rate (19.5) but are forcing 25.0 takeaways per game.

A GLIMPSE INTO THE MIAMI SERIES:Miami and UMaine will be meeting for the fifth time in history and the second time in as many years. In last season’s meeting, then No. 11 Miami came away with a 76-51 victory. Sutton led Maine with 13 points and earned a spot on the Miami Holiday Classic All-Tournament team after avearging 14.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in two games. Julie Brosseau also tallied double-digits, finishing with 10 points at Miami. The Black Bears are 1-2 all-time on the road against Miami, dropping a 92-70 victory in 1997 before last seasons defeat. Maine’s victory on the road in the series came on Dec. 29, 2007; a 54-53 win. Maine won the first ever meeting, 76-56, on Jan. 13, 1988 in Bangor.

ECLIPSING THE CENTURY MARK On Nov. 16, the Black Bears defeated UMaine Fort Kent by a 100-40 final. The scoring total marked the first time Maine had scored 100+ since a 110-72 victory against Drexel in 1997. It also was the 21st time in the history of the program that Maine had reached the 100 point mark.

HOT START ON DThe Black Bears, who have ranked in the top-3 of the America East in scoring defense over the past three seasons, including leading the league twice, have carried the trend into the 2017 season. Maine currently leads the league in scoring defense (50.3) and field goal percentage defense (33.0)

20-20 Blanca Millan, who scored 20+ twice in her freshman season, has already matched last season’s total after pouring in 28 against Harvard before tallying 26 against Bryant. Millan is the first Black Bear to eclipse the 20+ mark in back-to-back games since Sigi Koizar recorded scoring performances of 20 and 32 back on Feb. 8 and 11, 2016.

TIP-OFF TOURNAMENTThe Black Bears kicked off the season by hosting the Tip-Off Tournament for the second-straight season. Maine opened with a loss to Tulane but bounced back by defeating Harvard 76-51. Blanca Millan’s 28 points in the win earned her a spot on the All-Tournament team. In game one, Tanesha Sutton led the way with her second career double-double (13 pts/10 rebs). The tournament was played in ‘The Pit’ inside historic Memorial Gym, marking the first time the Black Bears had played back on campus since 2013.

MILLAN SHOOTS THE LIGHTS OUTIn Maine’s win over Harvard, Blanca Millan posted a record-breaking 92.3% (12-for-13) mark from the floor. The field goal percentage broke Maine’s previous single-game field goal mark of 91.6% (11-for-12) set by Katie Whittier against North Carolina A&T on Dec. 29, 2005. Millan, who was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field in the first half, made her first nine field goals before missing her lone field goal on her first attempt in the fourth quarter. Millan finished 4-for-4 from 3-point range.

STAY AT-HOMEMaine will began the season with a welcoming four-game homestand. The four games marks the first time Maine has played each of its first four games at home since 1997-98. In that season, Maine started 3-1 with wins over Northeastern, James Madison and UMass.

RETURNINGThe Black Bears return three starters and six letterwinners. Included in the returners are four of the top six scorers from a year ago. America East All-Rookie selection Blanca Millan leads the returners after averaging 8.6 points and 2.9 rebounds. Tanesha Sutton, who led Maine in rebounding (4.8) and assists (2.6) also returns after averaging 7.4 points. Julie Brosseau led Maine with a 33.7% mark from 3-point range while Fanny Wadling also returns after chipping in 5.0 ppg and 3.7 rpg.

COACH VACHONVachon, who spent the final 18 games of the 2016-17 season at the helm of the Black Bears’ staff, was officially named the interim head coach for the 2017-18 season on April 5 of 2017. Vachon, who took over head coaching duties after Coach Richard Barron stepped aside due to health complications, guided the Black Bears to an 11-7 mark during her time at the helm. Vachon led the Black Bears back to the America East title game, along the way knocking off No. 1 seeded New Hampshire in the America East semifinals. Vachon also guided UMaine to key wins, including an 84-71 victory over eventual America East Champions UAlbany. Under her guidance, the Black Bears posted an impressive 7-1 record at home.

HOME SWEET HOMEThe Black Bears have been very impressive at home in recent history. Maine is 38-2 on its home court over the past three seasons, including a 22-2 mark in America East play. The home mark includes a 21-game win streak, including a 13-0 home record in 2015-16. Last season, Maine averaged 66.6 points per game at home, outscoring opponents by a +9.2 margin compared to averaging 56.2 ppg on the road.

DEFENSE UNDER 50Maine has prided itself on defense over the past three seasons. The Black Bears are 39-2 over the past five seasons when holding a team under 50 points. What’s even more impressive is that the Black Bears have held 41 opponents under 50 points in four seasons.

CHALLENGING NON-CONFERENCE SLATEA year after playing both of the team who appeared in the 2017 NCAA Title Game (South Carolina/Mississippi St.), the Black Bears will be well tested early on in their season with another challenging non-conference slate. Maine will take on a pair of teams who begin the season in the top-10 of the AP 25 poll (No. 5 Ohio State, No. 7 Mississippi St). Maine will also take on preseason No. 12 Duke and Miami, who is ranked No. 24 in the USA Today Top-25 poll.

AMERICA EAST PRESEASON POLLAfter defeating No. 1 New Hampshire on their way making their second-straight appearance in the America East title game, the Black Bears have been selected sixth in the America East Preseason Coaches Poll. New Hampshire, the defending regular season champions, earned eight first-place votes as the favorite and were followed by the 2017 America East Tournament Champions UAlbany.
