Is CD Laddering Right for You?Submitted by Amy L. Brown, 228 S. Carroll Rd, Villa

Rica, 678-840-5000, www.amybrown.bizWith the recent volatility in the stock market, peo-

ple are hesitant to put their entire nest egg into themarket. Additionally, with the economy creating tight

times for families, it’s often necessary to make sure funds are available if and when we need them. For those investorswho are either reluctant to jump head first into the market or thosewho may have a need for cash, the strategy of laddering Certifi-cates of Deposit (CDs) may be appropriate.

CD laddering is the process of structuring your investment intoCDs to take advantage of the higher rates afforded by longer-term

time deposits, yet maintaining liquidity by arranging it so that equalportions of the invested money is available periodically. To accom-plish this, you begin by buying numerous CDs with various maturi-

ties. For instance, let’s say you have $25,000 to invest. Rather than

investing the $25,000 in one CD that matures at a designated time, by laddering CDs, you may choose to invest $5,000 in eachof five separate CDs. In this example, you would then purchase a1-year, 2-year, 3-year, 4-year, and 5-year CD in equal amounts of $5,000. After one year, when your first CD matures, you wouldinvest it in a new 5-year CD. Each year, a CD will expire and, if the

funds are not needed, they will be reinvested in a new 5-year CD to take advantage of the higher interest rate typically offered by a5-year CD as compared to the 1- or 2-year CDs.

This approach allows you the comfort of knowing that a CDwill mature each year in case you need the money, yet still takeadvantage of the higher rates typically offered for longer maturities.Staggering your maturity dates also helps smooth out the volatility of the market. If interest rates rise during the year, you will havemoney available to invest in a higher rate CD. Or, if rates fall, only a portion of your investment dollars will need to be reinvested at

the lower rate.CD laddering may be a strategy that’s appropriate for your life-

style. Plus, with the guaranteed interest rate offered on CDs, youwill be able to plan your future with confidence. Talk with your in-surance agent or financial expert for more information.

Understanding Medicare Advantage PlansBy Melissa Murphy. Administrator at Pine Knoll Nursing & RehabCenter, 770-834-8243, [email protected]

A trend has developed recently among our admissions andreferrals. We are seeing more and more referrals whose maininsurance is a Medicare Advantage HMO or PPO instead of tra-ditional Medicare Part A, which is what most seniors rely upon topay for their initial stay in a rehab center or nursing home (in insur-ance speak it is called SNF for Skilled Nursing Facility). TraditionalMedicare Part A pays for up to 20 days at no cost to you in a rehab

facility (SNF) following a three day hospital stay.Medicare Advantage Plans are health plan options that are part

of the Medicare program. If you join one of these plans, you gen-erally get all your Medicare-covered health care through that plan. What each plan pays for is different, and most times, you must use

the doctor and other healthcare providers that are specified, or theplan does not pay.

One of the major disadvantages of most Medicare Advantageplans is that it DOES NOT pay for the 20 days in a rehab center or nursing home at no cost, and most charge significant co-paysafter the first 3 or 5 days. Sometimes this means that hospitaldischarge planners and family members are left scrambling to ar-range safe home care on a short notice or have to pay privately

for home care because the senior cannot afford the co-pays. Youshould know that even if you have Medigap insurance or Medic-aid, Medigap policies and Medicaid do not work with Medicare

Advantage plans.Medicare Advantage plans are offered through a wide variety

of insurance carriers. Some carriers have information booths at the drug store or grocery store. Some insurance carriers market their products by telephone to Medicare members. The goal of the insurance carriers is, of course, to sign up as many membersas possible. Sometimes this means that explanations about thedetails are given very quickly, very briefly and very vaguely.

Before enrolling in any Medicare Advantage plan (MedicareHMO or PPO), please be sure to ask:

• How long do I have to stay enrolled?• What happens if I want to dis-enroll?• Is there a list of doctors I must use?• What happens if I see a different doctor?• What happens if I need to go to a rehab center or

nursing home (the technical term is SNF)?• What are my co-pays? (Remember, your

supplemental policies and Medicaid will not work.)The best rule of thumb with this, or any other major decision for

that matter, is to communicate with someone close to you beforecommitting yourself. Most times, family members are not evenaware that mom or dad has signed up for these plans, and thatcomplicates matters tremendously if you are unable to speak for yourself.

Raising Sticky KidsBy Kerry Patuka. A Villa Rica resident who is a degreed

and certified educator, licensed minister and founder of Drive 5 Ministries, a consulting, speaking and training ministry for churches and children’s ministry. Contact her at [email protected]

It may seem that a good part of our parenting life is spent trying tokeep our kids clean and not sticky, but developing kids that stick with stuff is important. Through this they learn about commitment, perseverance, positive attitudes, doing their best and more. The beginning of a newschool year brings with it the opportunities to try many new and exciting

things, but how do we grow kids that pick something and stick with it.1. Listen to your kids and observe their strengths. Think about your

child, his strengths and what he enjoys doing. Also consider his socialskills, age and past experiences. When talking with your child, makenote of the things he likes to talk about, but also listen for the way he

talks about it. Take the time to really know your kids, help them develop their own interests and guide them in selecting activities that might work for them. God has a great plan for each of them and our job is to help them discover it.

2. Do your homework. As parents, we need to do our prep work first.Research activities that your child expresses an interest in or activities thatyou think might be a good fit for him. Check out the activity, the places itis offered, the time commitment, the cost, the parental involvement, theschedule, the age groups and more. Neither you nor your child wants tobe surprised after you have already made the commitment. All parentsneed to be their children’s advocates, but you really need do to your homework if you have a child with any special needs.

3. Limit activities. Too many activities makes it impossible for your child to stick with all of them and the more than are involved with, theharder it is to keep a commitment to them all. You know your child andyou’ve done your homework, so first limit the activities they can choose

from and then limit the number that they can participate in this year. There are a couple ways to do this. You could simply limit the amountof activities they may be involved in throughout the coming year – theyounger the child the fewer the activities. You could also divide the activi-

ties into categories – sports, arts, social activities, educational activitiesand faith-based activities. Then you set the parameters, such as allow-ing your child to pick one from each category.

4. Make a commitment. Make sure your child understands that he’ssticking with this activity for the entire year or season. You are makinga commitment of your money and time and they should be taught thevalue of that, as well as the importance of being a part of team, keepingyour word and finishing. These are all parts of being sticky.

5. Acknowledge their feelings. No matter how much research youdo or how well your child does in selecting activities, the truth is there willbe days when he just doesn’t feel like going and he may pick an activ-ity he ends up not liking. That’s okay and that’s life. These times arewonderful teaching moments. Let your kids know its okay to feel thatway and that everybody feels that way sometimes. Talk about the impor-

tance of being sticky and how it will benefit them in the long run.6. Focus on the positive. There has to be something positive about

every activity. Even if the only positive thing is that your child has learnedshe doesn’t like a certain sport or he didn’t enjoy a certain activity. Partof growing as a person is learning what we do not like, what we are notgood at…so that’s a positive.

7. Finish well. So the chosen activity was a bust. But sticking withsomething through completion is a great feeling. Help your child feelgood about his stickiness. Maybe, he didn’t enjoy the activity. The in-

structor or coach may not have been someone you or your child liked. The time or location may not have been convenient, but that doesn’tmean your child can’t finish well. He can still have an attitude that says

thanks for the opportunity even though this activity is not one for me. Letyour child know how proud you are of him for being sticky.

Green StyleBy Joann Britt, Round 2 Consignments, 490 Bankhead Highway,

Carrollton, 770-214-*5599There’s a green revolution that you may not know about, and it

comes in all colors and sizes. Thrift stores and consignment clothingstores are recycling designer clothing all over the country. The best

fabrics and the best designs last for years, but there are only so many times you can wear one outfit yourself.

What to do with those brand name duds from last year or last sea-son? Or the ones you’ve never taken the tags off of, but know you’llnever wear? Call a local consignment shop and see how their programoperates. Usually they will take clean, new or nearly new clothing for aseason, and if it sells, you get 50% of the selling price. Jeans go for $8

to $10, blouses range from four to ten, depending on style and brand. A closetful of summer clothes can go a long way toward paying for anew (or consigned!) fall wardrobe. It’s a good deal all around – youearn a few bucks, other shoppers get a great price on a new outfit,

28 Villa Rica News & Views

and you can all feel good about ‘recycling’ merchandise that is takingup space in your closet. Some items which are a great deal for buyersand sellers in any season:

• Baby clothes – these can go through several families before they wear out.

• Blue jeans – in any condition, from brand new to old and torn, abest seller.

• Tee shirts – always a great price, especially the trendy labels.• Kid’s clothes – playwear, Sunday and holiday clothes that don’t

break the bank.

It’s easy to be a green consumer – consignment shopping and sell-ing is a classic way to ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’, and have the fashion you want at prices you can’t beat.

Douglas County residents plan Labor Day Tea Party A group of Douglas County citizens, frustrated with increases in gov-

ernment control and spending, have organized a Tea Party rally for Labor Day, Monday September 7, 2009. The event will be held from6:00pm to 8:00pm at Clinton Nature Preserve, and will feature radio

talk show host Herman Cain as the keynote speaker.Cain is a vocal proponent of limited government and the FairTax. In

addition to Cain’s keynote address, local speakers will address a variety of issues that impact people’s everyday lives. Joel Aaron of WGKA 920

talk radio and founding member of “We The People REVOLUTION”

will emcee and host the event. Citizens frustrated with out-of-controlgovernment spending, the national deficit and health care reform is-sues should attend the Tea Party to hear what they can do to get in-volved and stay informed.

Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets due tolimited seating at the facility.

Teaching Children to be OrganizedBy Joyce Maxwell, owner of ReJoyce N Order, Profes-

sional Organizer and speaker. Awarded “Business Asso-ciate of the Year for 2007” by Douglas County Chapter of

the American Business Womens Association. To find outabout having an organizing service come to your home, you maycall 770-941-0201 or visit www.rejoycenorder.com

With school in full swing, it’s a great time to teach your children to get organized! It doesn’t matter if you are a parent, grandparent, neighbor, or teacher, few things will benefit them more than learn-ing at an early age to establish good work habits. If you would like

to make a real impact on a child’s life teach them the skill of beingorganized, and yes, it is a “skill” that can be learned. There areactually very few people who are “born organized.

Make being organized a part of every day life . It’s important to teach kids that every item they own has a home, where it needs to return when they are through using it. Let kids know that they need to be responsible for their own possessions. Establish simpleroutines like making their own beds and keeping the floor clear.Have a ten-minute clean-up every night before bedtime.

Sort and containerize. Teach kids to group similar items togeth-er, and then find appropriate-sized containers that hold them. Withcolorful markers, write the name of what’s inside. This makes iteasy for retrieval, and, even more importantly, for clean-up!

For kids who can’t yet read, consider gluing photos or draw-ings of the objects on the front of the containers. The clear shoeorganizers that are made to hang on doors works great for storingsmall items like markers, tape, scissors and it’s a great way to utilizesmall spaces.

Help them downsize. Often, the sheer volume of stuff in a kid’s

life - the toys, sporting equipment, books, collections, clothes isoverwhelming, we are a nation of abundance and we can teachour kids a wonderful lesson on sharing by helping them down-size. Every six months have them donate seldom-used toys andoutgrown clothing. Establish the habit of “new toy in old toy out”system so some purging takes place daily or weekly. Talk to themabout the importance of sharing with others less fortunate.

Establish a great homework routine. Use an in/out box system for school papers that need to be seen by caregivers. Have a des-ignated study area. Keep it well-stocked with supplies so kids don’thave an excuse to leave the area. Don’t save every project your child makes. Post them temporarily then take them down and store

them in a drawer, tote, or even an unused pizza box. At years end

help each child choose their favorite ten.Until next month, God Bless and don’t forget to pick a few dai-

sies along the way.

For Children & Adults

www.allternativegym.com

Original ADELI Suit Therapy Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Cerebral Palsy Patients Obesity Stroke SurvivorsAutism Brain/Spinal Trauma Down Syndrome

IDEAL FOR BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

Allternative Gym serving the special needs population Angie Gomez, founder of Allternative Gym, started the gym

when she began thinking about her daughter, who had cerebralpalsy. She asked herself, “In a few short years – when she’ll be inher late teens - would she still be going to therapy? And if she’dbeen discharged from therapy, where would she go to continue thegood healthy foundation we’d built through therapy.”

She figured a gym would be ideal, but was afraid she would not feel comfortable going to a regular gym filled with perfect youngmen and women exercising normally. And so, the Allternative Gymdream was born. Angie made it her mission to learn and experi-ence a wide range of therapies and treatments.

Ideal for patients with cerebral palsy, autism, brain/spinal tap

trauma, down syndrome, obesity and stroke survivors, AllternativeGym offers two programs - the intense exercise program, whichconsists of a two-on-one ratio. Where a professional and a trainedhelper both trained in intensive model of (therapy) adaptive physi-cal fitness work with the patient. Depending on the patient needs,

the program is a three to four week session with the patient beingseen five days per week for four hours per day. The intense pro-gram focuses on strengthening and flexibility with the use of mas-sage therapy, Adeli/Neuro suit “Intensive Suit therapy”, universal

exercise unit, and progressive resistance exercises. Programs areindividualized for specific needs. This intense program is ideal for

those who want to enhance and improve developmental and func- tional abilities (ex: balance & coordination, gait, etc.). Increasingintensity of physical fitness therapy for a short period of time showsimprovement in functional measures, both in children with mild-

to-moderate or in children with severe motor deficits, for example, cerebral palsy and related disabilities.

The second program is the intensive physical fitness program“membership”. The gym membership consists of a one-on-one ra-

tio. Depending on the patient’s needs, the program is two to three times a week for two hours per session. The sessions generally last

one to three months.. The gym memberships focus on strengthen-ing and flexibility with the use of massage therapy, universal exer-cise unit, and progressive resistance exercises.

Three of Allternative Gyms methods of treatment are the ADELIsuit, the Universal Exercise Unit and the Hyperbaric Oxygen Unit.

The ADELI suit, originally designed for the Russian space pro-gram, offered cosmonauts (in a weightless setting for extended pe-riods) the “compression resistance” their bodies needed to preservemuscle tone. Allternative Gym’s founder, Angie Gomez, trainedfor six weeks under one of the Russian doctors who developed the

ADELI suit. The suits, composed of bungee-like bands, help put abody (one with limited motor control) into proper alignment. With

a cerebral palsy patient, for instance, the muscles don’t know howto work. By performing precise and intensive movements, they “re-train” the brain to build new pathways. Repetition builds strengthalong with correct patterns of muscle movement. Only a handful of facilities in the world have these suits.

The Universal Exercise Unit (also know as the The Cage) fea-tures bungee cords attached to the sides and then fixed to the waist.By providing support and balance to user, it allows them to practiceexercises that would otherwise be difficult or impossible.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) clinics exist throughout theUnited States. Patients are using HBOT to heal damaged tissue, fight infections, promote the growth of new blood vessels, reducepain and inflammation, recover from surgery and treat accidentalinjuries.

In the 1600’s European doctors observed that their patientshealed more quickly at sea level versus in the mountains. The de-creased atmospheric pressure in the mountains prevents adequateoxygen tissue saturation. During HBOT the body experiences anincrease of atmospheric pressure (up to 3ATA) in a 100 % Oxygen-ated Environment, thus, increasing your body’s natural ability tofight infections and heal more rapidly.

CommunicationIt is amazing to me how com-

munication has changed over the

years. My grandmother was bornat the turn of the century. Sheexperienced many major innova-

tions over the years from the au- tomobile to the telephone to the

television. She passed away before cell phones were common to everyone. Since we never lived in the same state, I enjoyedwriting her letters. Letters provide a more intimate form of communication.

One way God chose to communicate with us was throughwritten form. Over hundreds of years through various individu-als He communicated His love for us. Some of His letters arehistorical, some are poetic while others are narrative. From

the beginning through the end of the Bible the love of God isapparent. God clearly values communication. It is fascinating

to study His Word discovering truths He chose to communicate through His Word. If you want a good place to start, begin by reading one chapter in the Book of Proverbs each day. By theend of the month you will have read the entire Book of Proverbsand given the Lord an opportunity to speak to you through HisWord.

StormsThere are certain aspects to storms that

are intriguing, even beautiful. Ever no- tice how fascinating it is to watch the ap-proaching clouds as they darken and gath-er strength? Or why it is that people mustbe warned to evacuate when a hurricane isapproaching? Then there is that group of people we call storm chasers who actually

try to get in the way of tornadoes. Most of us think they are crazy, but we will make

sure we watch the video they capture while doing it. Once a thunderstorm has passed through, the sky seems so clear and theair smells so clean. Even the devastation brought by hurricanesresults in newness—new building, communities, and of course,

zoning laws to make structures more capable of withstanding thenext storm.

We all go through storms, the weather type and the other ones that come into our lives—economic, relationship, health stormsand more. When the storm turns from something interesting towatch into something threatening our life, we sometimes makepoor decisions and increase the devastation. By taking a look atwhat can be learned from the weather storms we face, we can

find some do’s and don’ts for handling the emotional, economicand relational storms we face.

Preparation - The people and places that best weather stormsare those who prepare for them. They give heed to the warningsigns and use the advance notice to board up windows, add sand-bags, even evacuate. Many times we know a storm is coming in

our lives, but we choose to ignore it, hoping it will just go away. Then, like those who ignored the hurricane warnings, we need tobe rescued. Learn to recognize the storm triggers in your life anddevelop positive, scriptural coping skills for meeting them head on.Learn when to evacuate and when to stand your ground. We aregoing to face storms—Jesus promised it—so why not develop astorm plan? He gave us a great tip on where to start—build a solid

foundation. Examine the foundational aspects of your life—your finances, relationships, emotions, and health. Are they solid, builton God’s Word? Jesus promised us that the Word would standwhen everything else failed. Great preparation starts with solid

foundations. Aftermath - Examining the results of previous storms lets us

know where we were weak. We are able to determine which kindof trees are most susceptible to snapping in a strong wind andwhich materials best withstand the flood waters. Look at the paststorms you have endured. Where did your life give way? Whatemotions snapped and broke, causing more destruction as they

fell? The people who learn to “fail forward” are better equipped to face the next one.

God’s Word describes his people as palm trees. An amazing thing about palms, during storms they grow in diameter and be-come stronger. Make a decision to not only weather the stormsyou are facing, but to use them as a catalyst to become stronger.

Family Worship Center to hold ‘Boundaries’class - learn to establish boundaries in your life

Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balancedlifestyle. A boundary is a personal property line that marks those

things for which we are responsible. In other words, boundariesdefine who we are and who we are not.

Often, Christians focus so much on being loving and unselfish that they forget their own limits and limitations. When confrontedwith their lack of boundaries, they ask: Can I set limits and still bea loving person? What are legitimate boundaries? What if some-one is upset or hurt by my boundaries? How do I answer some-one who wants my time, love, energy or money? Aren’t boundar-ies selfish? Why do I feel guilty or afraid when I consider settingboundaries?

My name is Brandi Eckman and I am in charge of the thewomen’s ministry at Family Worship Center of West Georgianamed Daughters of Jerusalem. I would like to invite all ladies

to join us at FWC to experience God’s delivering power as wejourney through the book “Boundaries”. Growing up in a dys-

functional family and having an extremely abusive past, I found itvery difficult to establish appropriate boundaries in my life. At theage of 27, when I turned my life over to the Lord, my life was acomplete disaster. I had trouble saying no to everything that hurtme and trouble saying yes to the very thing that would help me.God revealed to me, through his word and this book, that I hada problem saying no because I didn’t respect myself. When I wasyoung, a boundary was crossed in my life that was not supposed

to be crossed. I then continued down a downward spiral of self destruction, allowing everyone and everything in my life that wasslowly killing me. God began to show me that I needed to takeresponsibility for my own life starting, with the word NO. I wasstuck in a cycle of rebellion and codependency not knowing theway out. Thank God that he is faithful and worked along with my desire of wanting to be free. I can now say that once a victim of

abuse, I now am a victor! If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, and desire achange that is permanent, please come and join me with many others and begin to change your life once and for all. The firstclass will be an introduction and testimony. The class will last nineweeks. and will be held every Sunday, starting the last Sunday inSeptember beginning at 6:00pm. The cost is $17 which includes

the book Boundaries along with the participation guide. Pleasecall 678-462-5522 (ask for Brandi) to reserve your spot by the13th of September.

What is Physical Therapy?By Justin B. Rich, MPT, CSCS

and Eric Moran- te, PT, M B A ,CSCS of

Accel Physical Therapy. Accel

has 2 convenient locations in VillaRica at Mirror Lake Boulevardand in Douglasville

We often have new patientscome into our clinic with ques-

tions about physical therapy, whois the appropriate candidate for physical therapy, and what to ex-pect with a physical therapy treat-ment.

“What is Physical Therapy?” According to the AmericanPhysical Therapy Association, aphysical therapist is a health careprofessional who diagnoses and

treats individuals of all ages, fromnewborns to the very oldest, whichhave medical problems or other health-related conditions thatlimit their ability to move and per-

form functional activities in their daily lives. Physical therapists areexperts in speeding up the heal-ing process and developing plans

to return to activities of daily livingas quickly and safely as possible. We are skilled in techniques to

reduce pain, restore strength andmobility, and prevent disability.“Isn’t Physical Therapy only

for athletes?” A common mis-nomer is that physical therapy isonly for athletes. Athletes makeup only a small percentage of our patients. We see patients fromschool aged children to senior cit-izens for problems from shoulder, neck, low back, and knee pain todizziness and decreased balance.

We also work with patients withdisability after orthopedic surgery such as knee replacement, rota-

tor cuff repair, and back and neck surgeries. In many cases, physical

therapy is used to avoid invasive, expensive, and complicated sur-geries.

“What does a Physical Thera-pist do?” Physical therapists useindividualized treatment plans andprograms that are tailored to eachpatient. On the initial visit, the pa-

tient is evaluated and a plan andgoals for treatment are formulat-ed. From there we work side by side with the patient to reach thesegoals. We use modalities for painrelief and inflammation reductionlike ultrasound (sound waves thatdecrease swelling, heat tissues, and speed tissue healing), electro-

therapy (electrical current whichreduces pain and swelling), aswell as hot packs and cold packs.Physical therapist use hands onmassage, stretching, and manipu-lations to decrease muscle spasmsand increase joint movement.

Along with modalities, physical therapist use and prescribe spe-cific therapeutic exercises in order

to restore strength, stability, mobil-ity, endurance, and balance. Wealso strive to educate patients on

techniques with body mechanics, work station changes, and modify-ing posture in order to avoid futureproblems or flare-ups.

“How do I get started?” In theState of Georgia, physical therapy is only provided by a LicensedPhysical Therapist. In most cases,

the sooner you are able to begin treatment the better and is cov-ered under the majority of healthinsurance plans

Swine FluProvided by Charles R. Cooley,

M.D. of M.D. Minor Emergency &Family Medicine, 770-456-0911,

209 Cooley Dr.Swine flu could strike up to 40%

of Americans over the next twoyears. The World Health Orga-

nization (WHO) says as many as two billion people could becomeinfected over the next two years– nearly 1/3 of the world popula-

tion. WHO believes the world isin the early phase of a new pan-demic. Centers for Disease Con-

trol (CDC) estimates that twice thenumber of people who usually getsick in a normal flu season wouldbe struck by swine flu. In a normal

flu season, about 36,000 peopledie from flu and its complications.Five percent to 20% of people get

the flu every year. The CDC has declared Geor-

gia as one of the states withwidespread influenza. Spread of novel H1N1 virus is thought to behappening in the same way thatseasonal flu spreads. The flu virusspreads through the air when aperson who has the virus sneezes, coughs, or speaks. Sometimespeople may become infected by

touching something with flu vi-ruses on it and then touching their

mouth or nose. One alarming fact is that theswine flu virus is spreading in thesummer months while it is hot.Typically, the flu season peaks inNovember and then again in Feb-ruary and March. CDC officials

fear an explosion of cases in the fall, when children return to schooland the weather turns cold, mak-ing the virus easier to spread.

So how can you protect your-self and your family from the flu?Get vaccinated! With the threatof swine flu on the rise, it’s criti-cal that you get vaccinated for seasonal flu. Everyone shouldalso take everyday preventive ac-

tions to stop the spread of germs, including frequent hand washing.People who are sick should stay home and avoid contact with oth-ers in order to limit further spreadof the illness.

If you or your child begins toexperience flu-like symptoms, youshould be tested for the flu as soon

as possible.
