President’s Pen

I hope you and your families are able to stay home and healthy during these times. I certainly have missed seeing you at our monthly meetings at the Engineer’s Club.

If you haven’t heard, ASHRAE Society is no longer holding the 2020 Annual Conference in Austin at the end of June; rather, the plan is to have a virtual conference instead. Please visit the ASHRAE 2020 Virtual Conference website for additional information as it’s available. In addition, please note that the ASHRAE HVAC Design Training in DC from June 15-19th was also cancelled.

Based on Society’s cancellations of their in-person events through June, the ASHRAE Baltimore Chapter will be following that precedent in an effort to keep you, our valued members, safe and healthy. That said, we have a lot going on over the next few months that we will be doing virtually; please continue reading below and see the additional information later in this Thermogram.

The May Meeting will be held on Thursday, May 7th online via GoToMeeting from 12pm (noon)—1:15 pm. Engineers from KCI will present on Virtual Design and Construction. Now, more than ever, this topic rings true to all of us in the industry! We will be charging a small fee for this month’s meeting to donate to Research Promotion (RP). Please register on our website to receive the GoToMeeting information: https://ashrae-balto.org/. Please note: we can only issue PDHs if your login information is accurate (name and email address) when you sign in to each GoToMeeting.

The May Meeting this year is dedicated to our Former Chapter Presidents, Students and Scholarships, RP, and the Baltimore Chapter’s 80th Celebration! We will be sharing additional information regarding all of these milestones in the coming weeks. In addition, this is the time of year that we vote on next year’s Chapter Board members. We’re going to be doing this digitally for the first time! See additional information in this Thermogram to learn how to place your vote. If you have any questions about logging in to our website, please reach out to our Web Technician and Electronic Communications Chair, Tom Ogden.

Unfortunately, neither our 9th Annual Rock Fish event nor our 63rd Annual Golf Outing will be held this spring. Our plan is to postpone both events to either later in the summer, or early fall of 2020. If you have already purchased boats and/or foursomes for golf, please reach out to Tyler Lee (Golf) and Kurt Wallace (Fishing) to inquire about refunds or holds on financial allocations until the events are held.

Have you been having trouble obtaining your PDH’s recently? Lucky for you, ASHRAE has developed a new solution to continue to bring technical content to our members. See the page later on dedicated to ASHRAE’s Tech Hours.

As a reminder, ASHRAE developed proactive guidance to help address concerns related to COVID-19 with respect to the operation and maintenance of HVAC systems which can be viewed at ashrae.org/covid19.

Continuing to do our best to bring you value while social distancing,

Steph Kunkel ASHRAE Baltimore Chapter President, 2019-2020

The Research Promotion Committee manages and supports both the Society-level fundraising and Chapter-level fundraising of the RP Campaign. Traditionally supporting just research, the RP Campaign was expanded 10 years ago to include support of Education & ALI, Endowed Research through ASHRAE Foundation, YEA programs, ASHRAE Scholarships, and the General/Unrestricted fund. Research, the backbone of ASHRAE, remains the primary fund of the program with over $2 million raised for this program annually.

Ways You Can Contribute:

Online at WWW.ASHRAE.ORG. On the top of the page click ‘make a gift’ and select ‘ASHRAE RP Campaign’. Fill in all the required info. Please remember to put BALTIMORE CHAPTER in the Assigned ASHRAE Chapter area so your chapter can receive credit.

Or, make your checks out to ASHRAE RESEARCH FUND. Please remember to add BALTIMORE CHAPTER to the memo line, and send to:

1791 Tullie Circle NE Atlanta, Georgia 30329-2305.

Have questions? Please contact our Baltimore Chapter RP Chair, Dave Cunningham at 443-832-1729, or [email protected]

Thank you so much for you support last year and we hope we can count on you again this year!

LEADERSHIP RECALL INTERVIEW

Tyler Lee - Past President, Baltimore Chapter 2009-2010 An interview by Baltimore Chapter Historian, Nicola Eastaway

1. Would you give a brief biographical sketch of your life? Born in Plymouth NH in 1971. Oldest of 3 with 2 younger sisters. Elementary School in NH then moved to upstate NY for High school & College. Graduated Hartwick College with a BS in Geology. Began working for an environmental engineering firm in Saratoga Springs, NY. After 4 years I was looking for a change and decided to join Emerson Swan (an HVAC manufacturer’s rep agency) as an inside salesperson. After a few years inside I eventually moved to an outside sales position. In 2001 I was looking for a change of scenery so I moved my family to Annapolis Maryland to work for Chesapeake Systems. My youngest daughter (Raeghan) is 16 years old and attending South River High School while my oldest Daughter (Morgan) is a freshman at Rensselaer Poly Tech (RPI) in Troy NY and pursuing a double major in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

2. What attracted you to engineering and the HVAC industry? I have always had passion for collecting vintage Texas Instrument calculators. I figured that getting into the HVAC industry would better my chances for finding the coveted I-2500 Datamath single-chip calculator for my collection.

3. Describe the industry at the time. What were the challenges that you and your colleagues were facing? When I first started in the HVAC industry individual computers were not common. Watching as technology evolved has sped up the pace at which we all work. It’s absolutely amazing how much more we can get done in a day. One negative effect of this evo-lution is that we personally interact with each other less often. This industry is built on long standing personal relationships which is one of the reasons I love it.

4. How and when did you get started in ASHRAE? I started attending ASHRAE meetings when I first got into the industry so that I could educate myself on the different equipment & applications. Starting with a geologist’s background didn’t expose me to some of the other sciences of the HVAC industry, so I started attending ASHRAE meeting in upstate NY in order to educate myself on the different system designs & application of equipment.

5. What was your ASHRAE chapter, regional and Society experience?

I started serving in the Baltimore chapter in 2001 as the attendance & reception chair. After helping with a few other committee

positions I was “drafted to the big leagues” as a Governor. Little did I know… this now meant I was on the ASHRAE conveyor belt of positions which culminated in my 2009 election to Presidency. After a few years off I was asked by an ASHRAE friend to

help the chapter as the 2012 CRC Chairperson. We had a great CRC that year thanks to the efforts of all the other Past Presidents that I drafted.

6. What were the major issues facing ASHRAE during your presidency or your time serving in subsequent positions? I had a great Board of Governors when I was the President so chapter operations ran very smooth.

7. What were your presidential theme/goals?

Don’t get impeached!! 8. What do you consider to be the major accomplishments during your term or your time serving in subsequent positions?

One of the major accomplishments was Captain Sully landing that plane in the Hudson on January 15th, 2009. Way to go Sully!! 9. What has ASHRAE meant to you personally?

I have made some amazing lifelong friendships from being involved with ASHRAE.

10. What advice would you give to a young person entering the HVAC field? I would encourage a young person entering the industry to participate on a committee. Most of the people involved are fun to spend time with and it will definitely help your career to build a network of friends.

11. What other interests and/or hobbies do you have? I race high performance catamarans and trimarans as well as scaring rockfish away from my baits on weekends.

12. Are there any other comments that you would like to make?

Go Ravens in 2020!!
