Maileg USA unveils today its enchanting Princess and the Pea Mouse and Keepsake Castle Box set, the newest addition to its growing world of whimsical toys created to inspire children’s favorite playtime stories. Beautifully designed in Denmark along with other members of the Maileg family, the Princess and the Pea set introduces new elements of fairytale magic to the beloved Maileg mouse collection (including Baby Mice, Big Sister and Big Brother, Mum and Dad, Grandmother and Granddad, and more) that continues to join families’ homes around the world.

Princess and the Pea takes the creativity of Maileg’s popular mice in matchbox beds to new heights in the form of six small mattresses upon which a darling Princess and the Pea Mouse daydreams and rests. Hidden within the pile of soft pastel mattresses is one tiny pea - hand knit with the attention to detail that Maileg is known for. Princess and the Pea Mouse is dressed for playtime in a sweet cotton gown and a shimmering crown upon her head – but is she a real princess? Only the pea and a child’s imagination will reveal the story!

Princess and the Pea Mouse and her bed are housed inside a keepsake card-board castle standing 7” tall, 3.5” deep and 6 “ wide. Both a charming world to play in and a functional box for storing, the castle sits beautifully on the toy shelf when children are done playing. The castle’s interior is illustrated with nostalgic wallpaper and a medieval–style chandelier, reflecting designer Dorothe Mail-il’s appreciation for childhood’s timelessness. From outside the printed “brick” castle, a small window reveals a handsome illustrated figure waving from inside. Who could it be, but the prince of our princess’ dreams-come-true? These are the hidden surprises that expand upon Maileg’s storytelling magic.

DORTHE MAILILMaileg Founder and Creative Director

Dorthe Mailil, is a Danish designer and illustrator living and working in Herning, Denmark. She is perhaps best known as the owner and Creative Director be-hind Maileg, a charming brand of toys that merge modern Scandinavian design with storybook whimsy and meticulous attention to detail.

Dorthe’s passion for design began at a young age, leading her to enroll in the prestigious Danish Design School in 1996 to pursue a career in graphic design. Dorthe also supplemented her education with studies at L’ecole D’art de Mar-seille and Paris, which she cites as contributing to the inspiration behind many of the sweet and nostalgic details that define the Maileg brand.

As the unlikely outcome of one of Dorthe’s class projects, Dorthe created a dis-tinctive clay character of exaggerated proportions whose spunky personality and charm immediately won the hearts of her entire class. This “pixie” quickly grew into a family of pixies, and Dorthe moved from the medium of clay to felt. Fabric. Following her joy for childhood play and imagination (at all ages!) Dorthe and her husband Erik founded Maileg in 1999 - combining their last name “Mailil” with the “leg”, the Danish word for play.

Since founding Maileg, Dorthe has won many awards and honors for both her toys, as well as for her well-known illustrations that appear around the world in books, magazines and even TV shows. Dorthe continues to provide all crea-tive direction for Maileg, contributing to a growing family that now includes bunnies, mice, forest friends, The Ginger family – all living in a charming world of hand-sewn clothing, modern furniture and playful accessories. Dorthe has proudly presented Maileg in renowned art galleries around the world including the Louvre (Paris), Caixa Forum (Barcelona), MoMA (New York) & National Gallery of Art (DC) It is unlikely to see Dorthe anywhere without her sketchbook in hand, and she has been known to wake up in the middle of the night with the newest idea for her next Maileg creation. There is no telling where her imagination will take Dorthe, and Maileg next!
