WATERBIRD MONITORING PROGRAMME AT THE MAI PO INNER DEEP BAY RAMSAR SITE
Programme 2011/12 Summer Count April 2011
The Summary Report – April 2011
Y.T. Yu1
The Waterbird Count was conducted on 17 April 2011. The survey area
included the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay area (the ‘Ramsar Site’) and wetland areas at and around the Ramsar Site (the ‘Deep Bay area’). The Deep Bay area covered the Ramsar Site and surrounding fishpond areas in Ma Tso Lung, Sam Po Shue, San Tin, Lok Ma Chau, Mai Po San Tsuen, Tam Kon Chau, Lut Chau, Tai Sang Wai, Luen Hing Wai, Nam Sang Wai, Fung Lok Wai and Tin Shui Wai; Hong Kong Wetland Park; and intertidal mudflat between Tsim Bei Tsui and Nim Wan. Besides, it also covered Futian National Nature Reserve at Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Mainland China.
A total of 18,759 waterbirds were counted in the whole Deep Bay area, of which
10,534 (56%) were recorded in the Ramsar Site. As usual, April is the peak time for passage shorebirds when they migrate to the North. They formed the largest waterbird group with a total of 15,426 individuals (82%). The second largest group was ‘Ardeids’ with 1,698 individuals (9.1%).
Table 1 compares the results of the Counts conducted in April of the past five
consecutive years and the average for the month. The number of waterbirds recorded at the Deep Bay area and the Ramsar Site in April 2011 was lower than that recorded in 2010 by 18% and 25% respectively. Comparing to the average for the month, the result at the Deep Bay area was higher while the Ramsar Site was similar to the average. Table 1. WATERBIRD MONITORING PROGRAMME AT THE
MAI PO INNER DEEP BAY RAMSAR SITE
Programme 2011/12 Summer Count May 2011
Summary Report – May 2011
The Waterbird Count was conducted on 8 May 2011. The survey area
included the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay area (the ‘Ramsar Site’) and wetland areas at and around the Ramsar Site (the ‘Deep Bay area’). The Deep Bay area covered the Ramsar Site and surrounding fishpond areas in Ma Tso Lung, Sam Po Shue, San Tin, Lok Ma Chau, Mai Po San Tsuen, Tam Kon Chau, Lut Chau, Tai Sang Wai, Luen Hing Wai, Nam Sang Wai, Fung Lok Wai and Tin Shui Wai; Hong Kong Wetland Park; and intertidal mudflat between Tsim Bei Tsui and Nim Wan. Besides, it also covered Futian National Nature Reserve at Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Mainland China.
A total of 5,615 waterbirds were counted at the Deep Bay area, of which 4,275
(76%) were recorded in the Ramsar Site. The largest group of waterbird was ‘Shorebirds’ with a total of 4,017 individuals (72%) and the second largest group was ‘Ardeids’ with 1,288 (23%) individuals. Only a single Great Cormorant and a few ducks were recorded, indicating that many wintering waterbirds had left the Deep Bay area and returned to their breeding grounds in the north.
Table 1 compares the results of the Counts conducted in May of the past five
consecutive years and the average for the month. The number of waterbirds recorded in the Deep Bay area and the Ramsar Site in May 2011 had an increase of 63% and 72% respectively as compared with the previous year. Both numbers were also higher than the average for the month, but they were lower than the results in 2007 and 2008.

WATERBIRD MONITORING PROGRAMME AT THE MAI PO INNER DEEP BAY RAMSAR SITE
Programme 2011/12 Summer Count June 2011
Summary Report – June 2011
The Waterbird Count was conducted on 19 June 2011. The survey area included the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay area (the ‘Ramsar Site’) and wetland areas at and around the Ramsar Site (the ‘Deep Bay area’). The Deep Bay area covered the Ramsar Site and surrounding fishpond areas in Ma Tso Lung, Sam Po Shue, San Tin, Lok Ma Chau, Mai Po San Tsuen, Tam Kon Chau, Lut Chau, Tai Sang Wai, Luen Hing Wai, Nam Sang Wai, Fung Lok Wai and Tin Shui Wai; Hong Kong Wetland Park; and intertidal mudflat between Tsim Bei Tsui and Nim Wan. Besides, it also covered Futian National Nature Reserve at Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Mainland China.
A total of 1,694 waterbirds were recorded in the whole Deep Bay area, of which
805 (48%) were recorded in the Ramsar Site. ‘Ardeids’ was the largest waterbird group with a total of 1,319 (78%) individuals recorded. Only a small number of ‘Shorebirds’ (164 individuals, 10%) and ‘Ducks and Grebes’ (155 individuals, 9%) were counted as many migratory waterbirds had returned to their breeding grounds in the north.
Table 1 compares the results of the Counts conducted in June of the past five consecutive years and the average for the month. The recorded number of waterbirds at the Deep Bay area in June 2011 showed a decrease of 12% as compared with the previous year, while the Ramsar Site showed an increase of 8%. Both results were lower than the average for the month.

WATERBIRD MONITORING PROGRAMME AT THE
MAI PO INNER DEEP BAY RAMSAR SITE
Programme 2011/12 Summer Count July 2011
Summary Report – July 2011
The Waterbird Count was conducted on 17 July 2011. The survey area
included the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay area (the ‘Ramsar Site’) and wetland areas at and around the Ramsar Site (the ‘Deep Bay area’). The Deep Bay area covered the Ramsar Site and surrounding fishpond areas in Ma Tso Lung, Sam Po Shue, San Tin, Lok Ma Chau, Mai Po San Tsuen, Tam Kon Chau, Lut Chau, Tai Sang Wai, Luen Hing Wai, Nam Sang Wai, Fung Lok Wai and Tin Shui Wai; Hong Kong Wetland Park; and intertidal mudflat between Tsim Bei Tsui and Nim Wan. Besides, it also covered Futian National Nature Reserve at Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Mainland China. To increase coverage of fishponds in the survey, three new survey sites were added starting from July 2011, namely, Sam Po Shue, Nam Sang Wai, and Luen Hing Wai (including Wing Kei Tsuen).
A total of 4,068 waterbirds were recorded in the whole Deep Bay area, of which
1,471 (36%) were recorded at the Ramsar Site. The largest waterbird group was ‘Ardeids’ with 3,059 individuals (75%), followed by ‘Shorebirds’ with 504 individuals (20%) and ‘Ducks and Grebes’ at 139 birds (3%). The Ardeids recorded were mostly resident in the Deep Bay area. As there were only a small number of shorebirds in the Deep Bay area, this indicated that the autumn migration had still not yet started.
Table 1 compares the results of the Counts conducted in July of the past five
consecutive years and the average for the month. The number of waterbirds recorded in both the Deep Bay area and the Ramsar Site in July 2011 were higher than those of the previous year as well as the average for the month. The result at the Deep Bay area was more than two times of the previous year, and the result in Ramsar Site had a significant increase of 55%. The number of waterbirds recorded in the Deep Bay area was also the second highest record since commencement of this programme in 1998. Table 1. Waterbird Counts conducted in July 2007 to 2011 July 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 Average* Std. WATERBIRD MONITORING PROGRAMME AT THE MAI PO INNER DEEP BAY RAMSAR SITE
Programme 2011/12 Summer Count August 2011
Summary Report – August 2011
The Waterbird Count was conducted on 14 August 2011. The survey area included the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay area (the ‘Ramsar Site’) and wetland areas at and around the Ramsar Site (the ‘Deep Bay area’). The Deep Bay area covered the Ramsar Site and surrounding fishpond areas in Ma Tso Lung, Sam Po Shue, San Tin, Lok Ma Chau, Mai Po San Tsuen, Tam Kon Chau, Lut Chau, Tai Sang Wai, Luen Hing Wai, Nam Sang Wai, Fung Lok Wai and Tin Shui Wai; Hong Kong Wetland Park; and intertidal mudflat between Tsim Bei Tsui and Nim Wan. Besides, it also covered Futian National Nature Reserve at Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Mainland China.
A total of 4,235 waterbirds were recorded in this count, of which 2,406 (57%)
were recorded in the Ramsar Site. The largest waterbird group was ‘Shorebirds’ with 2,132 individuals (50%), followed by ‘Ardeids’ with 1,925 birds (46%). The shorebirds had a significant increase in number as compared with 504 individuals recorded in July 2011. This indicated that passage shorebirds had started their southward migration and stopover in the Deep Bay area. On the other hand, only a small number of ‘Ducks and Grebes’ were recorded in this month, indicating that the wintering ducks had not yet returned to the Deep Bay area.
Table 1 compares the results of the Counts conducted in August of the past five
consecutive years and the average for the month. The number of waterbirds recorded in the Deep Bay area had a small increase of 2% from the previous year and 5% higher than the monthly average. However, the number recorded in the Ramsar Site was 16% less than the previous year and it was also lower than the average by 8%.

The Waterbird Count was conducted on 11 September 2011. The survey area included the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay area (the ‘Ramsar Site’) and wetland areas at and around the Ramsar Site (the ‘Deep Bay area’). The Deep Bay area covered the Ramsar Site and surrounding fishpond areas in Ma Tso Lung, Sam Po Shue, San Tin, Lok Ma Chau, Mai Po San Tsuen, Tam Kon Chau, Lut Chau, Tai Sang Wai, Luen Hing Wai, Nam Sang Wai, Fung Lok Wai and Tin Shui Wai; Hong Kong Wetland Park; and intertidal mudflat between Tsim Bei Tsui and Nim Wan. Besides, it also covered Futian National Nature Reserve at Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Mainland China.
A total of 5,899 waterbirds were counted at the Deep Bay area, of which 2,904

WATERBIRD MONITORING PROGRAMME AT THE MAI PO INNER DEEP BAY RAMSAR SITE
Programme 2011/12 Winter Count October 2011
Summary Report – October 2011
The monthly Waterbird Count was conducted on 9 October 2011. The survey area included the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay area (the ‘Ramsar Site’) and wetland areas at and around the Ramsar Site (the ‘Deep Bay area’). The Deep Bay area covered the Ramsar Site and surrounding fishpond areas in Ma Tso Lung, Sam Po Shue, San Tin, Lok Ma Chau, Mai Po San Tsuen, Tam Kon Chau, Lut Chau, Tai Sang Wai, Luen Hing Wai, Nam Sang Wai, Fung Lok Wai and Tin Shui Wai; Hong Kong Wetland Park; and intertidal mudflat between Tsim Bei Tsui and Nim Wan. Besides, it also covered Futian National Nature Reserve at Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Mainland China.
There were altogether 9,747 waterbirds recorded at the Deep Bay area, of which
5,250 (54%) were recorded at the Ramsar Site. ‘Shorebird’ constituted the major waterbird group with a total of 4,327 (44%) individuals recorded. It was followed by ‘Ardeids’ with 2,685 (28%) individuals. The number of ‘Ducks and Grebes’ and ‘Cormorant’ had also increased to 1,738 (18%) and 889 (9%) respectively, indicating the gradual return of wintering waterbirds to the Deep Bay area.
Results of the Counts conducted in October of each year from 2007 to 2011 and the average for the month are listed in Table 1. The number of waterbirds recorded in October 2011 at the Deep Bay area showed an 18% increase as compared with the previous year and it was also 8% higher than the monthly average. At the Ramsar Site, there was a decrease of 12% and 8% respectively as compared with the result of the previous year and the average for the month.

WATERBIRD MONITORING PROGRAMME AT THE MAI PO INNER DEEP BAY RAMSAR SITE
Programme 2011/12 Winter Count November 2011
Summary Report – November 2011
The November Waterbird Count was conducted on 13 November 2011. The survey area included the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay area (the ‘Ramsar Site’) and wetland areas at and around the Ramsar Site (the ‘Deep Bay area’). The Deep Bay area covered the Ramsar Site and surrounding fishpond areas in Ma Tso Lung, Sam Po Shue, San Tin, Lok Ma Chau, Mai Po San Tsuen, Tam Kon Chau, Lut Chau, Tai Sang Wai, Luen Hing Wai, Nam Sang Wai, Fung Lok Wai and Tin Shui Wai; Hong Kong Wetland Park; and intertidal mudflat between Tsim Bei Tsui and Nim Wan. Besides, it also covered Futian National Nature Reserve at Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Mainland China.
A total of 36,442 waterbirds were recorded at the Deep Bay area, of which
16,662 (46%) were recorded at the Ramsar Site. Wintering ‘Ducks and Grebes’ comprised the largest group of waterbird with 13,997 (38%) individuals, while ‘Shorebirds’ was the second largest group with 11,873 (33%) individuals. The number of Great Cormorants arriving at the Deep Bay area had also increased to 5,738 (16%).
Results of the Counts conducted in November of each year from 2007 to 2011
and the average for the month are listed in Table 1. The number of waterbirds recorded in both the Deep Bay area and the Ramsar Site were higher than those of the previous year by 12% and 33% respectively. Comparing the results with the average for the month, the Deep Bay area was 14% higher, while the Ramsar Site was 14% lower than the average.

WATERBIRD MONITORING PROGRAMME AT THE MAI PO INNER DEEP BAY RAMSAR SITE
Programme 2011/12 Winter Count December 2011
Summary Report – December 2011
The Waterbird Count was conducted on 18 December 2011. The survey area included the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay area (the ‘Ramsar Site’) and wetland areas at and around the Ramsar Site (the ‘Deep Bay area’). The Deep Bay area covered the Ramsar Site and surrounding fishpond areas in Ma Tso Lung, Sam Po Shue, San Tin, Lok Ma Chau, Mai Po San Tsuen, Tam Kon Chau, Lut Chau, Tai Sang Wai, Luen Hing Wai, Nam Sang Wai, Fung Lok Wai and Tin Shui Wai; Hong Kong Wetland Park; and intertidal mudflat between Tsim Bei Tsui and Nim Wan. Besides, it also covered Futian National Nature Reserve at Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Mainland China. In addition, a low-tide count was conducted on the same day at Tsim Bei Tsui police jetty and the Futian National Nature Reserve in order to provide supplementary data to the regular high tide count.
A total of 55,290 waterbirds were recorded at the Deep Bay area, of which
33,661 (61%) were recorded at the Ramsar Site. ‘Ducks and Grebe’ comprised the largest group of waterbird with 23,107 (42%) individuals, followed by ‘Shorebirds’ with a total of 16,784 (30%) individuals. The number of Wintering Great Cormorants reached 9,431 individuals (17%), indicating that most of them had returned to the Deep Bay area. Some Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibunus were recorded in the low-tide count and their numbers were added as a part of the record of waterbirds counted in this month, details of which are shown in Table 1.
Table 2 shows the results of the Counts conducted in the past five consecutive
years and the average for the month. The number of waterbirds recorded at the Deep Bay area in December 2011 showed a decrease of 7%, while the number recorded at the Ramsar Site showed an increase of 16% as compared with the previous year. Both the numbers recorded at the Deep Bay area and the Ramsar Site were higher than the monthly average by 17% and 9% respectively.

WATERBIRD MONITORING PROGRAMME AT THE MAI PO INNER DEEP BAY RAMSAR SITE
Programme 2011/12 Winter Count January 2012
Summary Report – January 2012
The 2012 January Waterbird Count was conducted on 15 January 2012. The survey area included the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay area (the ‘Ramsar Site’) and wetland areas at and around the Ramsar Site (the ‘Deep Bay area’). The Deep Bay area covered the Ramsar Site and surrounding fishpond areas in Ma Tso Lung, Sam Po Shue, San Tin, Lok Ma Chau, Mai Po San Tsuen, Tam Kon Chau, Lut Chau, Tai Sang Wai, Luen Hing Wai, Nam Sang Wai, Fung Lok Wai and Tin Shui Wai; Hong Kong Wetland Park; and intertidal mudflat between Tsim Bei Tsui and Nim Wan. Besides, it also covered Futian National Nature Reserve at Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Mainland China. Apart from the usual counting exercise that was conducted at time of high-tide, a supplementary low-tide count was conducted on the same day at the intertidal mudflat area from Tsim Bei Tsui police jetty and from the direction of Futian National Nature Reserve.
Waterbirds in the number of 48,784 and 10,699 individuals were recorded in the
high-tide and low-tide counts respectively. A total of 49,202 waterbirds were recorded in the Deep Bay area, of which 34,561 (70%) were recorded in the Ramsar Site. ‘Shorebirds’ comprised the largest group of waterbird with 19,204 individuals recorded, while the ‘Ducks and Grebes’ with 13,711 (28%) individuals was the second largest waterbird group. Wintering Great Cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo with a total of 8,303 (17%) individuals were counted in their roosting sites, which was 11% less than that recorded in January 2011 (9,309 individuals). The low-tide count provided a higher number of the Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibunus and more details are listed in Table 1.
Table 2 shows the results of the Counts conducted in January of each year from
2008 to 2012 and the average for the month. Both the number of waterbirds recorded at the Deep Bay area and the Ramsar Site had decreased significantly. The number recorded at the Deep Bay area in January 2012 showed a decrease of 28% compared to that of the previous year, and 17% less than the monthly average; while the number recorded at the Ramsar Site showed a decrease of 19% compared to the previous year, and 12% less than the monthly average. The substantial reduction in number of wintering waterbirds in the Deep Bay area raised an alarm on the need for conservation. Although the exact reason for the decline in number of waterbirds was still not fully known, result of the Count might have been affected by factors such as visibility and weather condition, or quality of habitat at surrounding wintering area in the region.

WATERBIRD MONITORING PROGRAMME AT THE MAI PO INNER DEEP BAY RAMSAR SITE
Programme 2011/12 Winter Count February 2012
Summary Report – February 2012
The February Waterbird Count was conducted on 12 February 2012. The survey
area included the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay area (the ‘Ramsar Site’) and wetland areas at and around the Ramsar Site (the ‘Deep Bay area’). The Deep Bay area covered the Ramsar Site and surrounding fishpond areas in Ma Tso Lung, Sam Po Shue, San Tin, Lok Ma Chau, Mai Po San Tsuen, Tam Kon Chau, Lut Chau, Tai Sang Wai, Luen Hing Wai, Nam Sang Wai, Fung Lok Wai and Tin Shui Wai; Hong Kong Wetland Park; and intertidal mudflat between Tsim Bei Tsui and Nim Wan. Besides, it also covered Futian National Nature Reserve at Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Mainland China. Apart from the usual counting exercise that was conducted at time of high-tide, a supplementary low-tide count at the intertidal mudflat area was conducted on the same day from Tsim Bei Tsui police jetty and from the direction of Futian National Nature Reserve. This served to provide additional information on the number of birds which preferred to stay in the intertidal mudflat area during the low-tide period.
A total of 67,094 and 20,894 waterbirds were recorded in the high-tide and
low-tide counts respectively. Details of the high-tide and low-tide counts are listed in Table 1. By adding up the highest records from both counts, the total number of waterbirds recorded in the Deep Bay area was 68,080, of which a total of 45,744 (67%) were counted within the Ramsar Site. ‘Ducks and Grebes’ (25,739; 38%) and ‘Shorebirds’ (25,315; 37%) were the two major waterbird groups present. The third group was Great Cormorants and their number rose to 9,636 (14%) individuals, representing an increase of 16% from the previous month (i.e. January 2012, 8,303 individuals).
Result of the Counts conducted in February of each year from 2008 to 2012 and
the average for the month are listed in Table 1. The number of waterbirds recorded in the Deep Bay area and the Ramsar Site in February 2012 was 22% and 40% respectively higher than the previous year. Comparing to the average for the month, the record at the Deep Bay area and the Ramsar Site showed an increase of 32% and 34% respectively. The number recorded at the Ramsar Site was the second highest record for the month of February since commencement of the Waterbird Monitoring Programme in 1999.

WATERBIRD MONITORING PROGRAMME AT THE MAI PO INNER DEEP BAY RAMSAR SITE
Programme 2011/12 Winter Count March 2012
Summary Report – March 2012
The March Waterbird Count was conducted on 11 March 2012. The survey area
included the Mai Po Inner Deep Bay area (the ‘Ramsar Site’) and wetland areas at and around the Ramsar Site (the ‘Deep Bay area’). The Deep Bay area covered the Ramsar Site and surrounding fishpond areas in Ma Tso Lung, Sam Po Shue, San Tin, Lok Ma Chau, Mai Po San Tsuen, Tam Kon Chau, Lut Chau, Tai Sang Wai, Luen Hing Wai, Nam Sang Wai, Fung Lok Wai and Tin Shui Wai; Hong Kong Wetland Park; and intertidal mudflat between Tsim Bei Tsuui and Nim Wan. Besides, it also covered Futian National Nature Reserve at Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, Mainland China.
A total of 28,540 waterbirds were recorded, of which 18,084 (63%) were counted
in the Ramsar Site. ‘Shorebirds’ was the major group of waterbirds with a total number of 11,668 (41%), while ‘Ducks and Grebes’ at 6,407 (22%) individuals ranked the second. The substantial decrease in number of waterbirds indicated that many of them had left the Deep Bay area for migration back to their breeding grounds in the north. Other noticeable changes in this month included the drastic reduction in number of Great Cormorant from 9,636 individuals in February to 5,907 in March, of wintering ducks from 25,737 individuals to 6,407, and of shorebirds from 24,315 individuals to 11,668.
Table 1 shows the results of the Counts conducted in March of each year from
2008 to 2012 and the average for the month. The number of waterbirds recorded at the Deep Bay area and the Ramsar Site in March 2012 had decreased by 23% and 22% respectively compared to that of the previous year, which indicated the waterbirds have started northward migration. Comparing to the average for the month, the Deep Bay area was 6% higher, while the Ramsar Site was similar to the average.
Table 1. Waterbird Counts conducted in March 2008 to 2012. March 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 Average* Std. Dev.* Deep Bay area
