demic, Indianinformationtechnology(IT)services majors are leaving no stoneunturned to ensure their bottom linesremainleastaffected—atleast intheshorttomedium term.

In the quarter just ended, top IndianIT firms, such as Tata ConsultancyServices (TCS), Infosys, andWipro, havesignalled taking aggressive cost take-outmeasures, including reduction in sub-contracting costs, travel expenses, freezein salary hikes, and holding back vari-able payments, among others. “We arelooking at costs as if our lives depend onit. If one iswitnessing revenue reduction,the only way to respond is to reducecosts,” said Jatin Dalal, chief financialofficer (CFO),Wipro.

VRamakrishnan,CFOatTCS,alsosaidtheMumbai-headquarteredcompanywaslookingatcostoptimisationmeasures“asmuch as possible” across the board.

Owing to lack of visibility and anuncertainbusinessenvironment, ITserv-ices firms, such as Infosys and Wipro,have refrained from giving revenuegrowth guidance. Even thoughTCS doesnot give growth guidance figures, theMumbai-headquartered firmhas likenedthe situation to the 2008 global financialmeltdown.

Rating agency CRISIL, in a recentreport, said revenue pressures in the $97-billionITservices industrywill intensify inthe current year, crimping growth to adecadal lowof0-2percent. In2017-18, theindustry by far had registered the lowestgrowth at 4 per cent.

In order to contain costs, IT servicescompanies have announced a slew ofmeasures. Tech Mahindra, for example,has announcedamulti-lever approachofreducingsub-contractingcosts, third-par-ty costs, and even travel expenses whichaccount for 2-3 per cent of overall costs.

ThePune-basedfirmalsosaid itwouldbring in tighter synergies among sub-sidiaries, apart from effecting a tempo-rary freeze in salary hikes and variablepay.

India’s second-largest ITservicescom-pany Infosys has said its cost optimisa-tionmeasures exceeded the $150-milliontarget for 2019-20. The same measures,includingautomation,employeepyramidrationalization,andreductioninsub-con-tracting costs,would continue in the cur-rent year.

Apart fromlower revenue,otherhead-winds, such as lower utilisation, price

negotiationsfromclients,andhighercom-petition, are also reasonswhy companiesare pushing for such measures, saidSanjeev Hota, vice-president (head ofresearch), Sharekhan. Temporary salaryfreezes and tweaks to variable pay werealso commonacross the board.

“Our assumption is there will bedemanddeteriorationforsixmonths.Thatwill affect the cost side, and normalisa-tion of growth would return in 2021-22,”saidHota.

The opportunity for optimisingemployee and outsourcing costs —accounting for nearly 70 per cent of rev-enues — despite potential curbs onrecruitments and wage hikes, appears tobe limited, said CRISIL. “IT firms havealready streamlinedcosts and raisedutil-isation rates to peak levels of 85-90 percent inrecentyearsbyincreasingtheshareof fixed-price contracts.”

In order to effectively trackthe productivity of theseemployees as well as the over-allbusinessoutcome, thecom-pany is also building an inte-grated command controlsystem.ABetaversionof this isalreadyoperational, saidManojBhat, chief financial officer(CFO) of the Pune-headquar-tered company.

“We believe that 25-30 percentisanumberwhichcaneas-ilybesustained(forWFH)inthecurrent financial year.Wehaveseen a lot of willingness fromcustomers to consider remoteworking. But we have to workwithourcustomerstomakethisa viablemodel whichwill hap-pen in the next one-two quar-ters,”Bhat said.

“Thepoint is to get to knowwhat is collectively happeninginWFH,workfromthepremiseor client location and how totrack theoutcomeandproduc-tivity on a real-time basis,” headded.

At the end of FY20, TechMahindra had a headcount of

around 125,000. According tothe company, around 94 percentofthemarecurrentlywork-ing from home, owing to thelockdown that has beenimposed to contain the spreadofCovid-19.

Bhatsaidoneof thereasonswhy the company is looking atmaking the proposed controland command centre an “inte-gral”partof itsworkstyle in thefuture is to make the qualitymanagement system onlineand real time rather thandepending on manuals anddocuments.

However, Bhat agreed thatthe company has to deal withdata privacy issues, laws of the

land and client preferences totake WFH forward on a largerscale. “That’s why we are nottalking about a much highernumber,”he said.

During its post-earningsconference call with analystslast Thursday, Tech MahindrahighlightedWFH as one of thecost-optimisation strategies.Other measures being consid-ered by the company includereduction in subcontractingcosts,third-partycosts,andsav-ings in travel expenses, whichaccount for 2-3 per cent of thetotal costs. The company hasalso announced to temporarilyput on hold disbursal of vari-ablepayandbonuses.

कोरोना झाल्ाचे समजताच ‘ते’ पळून गेले;मोबाईल लोकेशनमुळे पोललसांच्ा ताब्ातमुंबई : मुलंुडमधील सहा तरुण कोरोनाची बाधा झाल्ाचे समजताच सोमवारी पळून गेले होते. त्ामुळे महापाललकेसह पोललसांचाही ताण वाढला होता. या सहा जणांमुळे अनेकांना कोरोनाची बाधा होण्ाची भीती असल्ाने रात्रभर त्ांचा शोध सुरू होता. अखेर मंगळवारी सकाळी ममत्रांच्ा घरी हे सहा जण सापडले. पोललसांनी ताब्ात घेऊन त्ांची रवानगी क्ारंटाईन सेंटरमध्े केली आहे. मुलंुडमध्े एका दिवसात ५५ रुग्ण आढळले आहेत. त्ातील ३६ रुग्ण हे इदंिरा नगर वस्ीतील आहेत. कोरोनाची बाधा झाल्ाचे समजताच त्ातील ६ तरुण पळून गेले होते. आरोग्य लशमबरात त्ांची कोरोना चाचणी करण्ात आली होती.

मुलंुडमध्ये रुग्णसंख्या शंभरपयारमुंबई : आतापययंत कोरोनाचे सववात कमी रुग्ण असलेल्ा मुलंुड पररसरातही रुग्णांची संख्ा वाढत आहे. मुलंुडमध्े सोमवारी एका दिवसात कोरोना संसगवाचे ५५ रुग्ण आढळल्ाने पाललका यंत्रणेची धावपळ उडाली. तोपययंत येथील कोरोना पॉझझटटव्ह रुग्णांचा आकडा शंभरीपार गेला आहे. प्रशासनाने या भागात तपासणीचा वेग वाढवला आहे. रुग्णांचा आकडा आणखी वाढण्ाची भीती व्यक्त केली जात आहे. मुंबईतील इतर वॉडवात कोरोनाबाधधत रुग्णांमध्े झपाट्ाने वाढ होत असताना मुलंुड पूव्व आणण पट्‍चम पररसरात रुग्णसंख्ेवर मनयंत्रण आले होते. मात्र गेल्ा पंधरा दिवसांत केलेल्ा तपासणी आणण चाचण्ांमध्े तब्बल ५५ पॉझझटटव्ह रुग्ण आढळून आले आहेत.

धयारयावीतील रुग्णणांचया आकडया ६६५ वरमुंबई : धारावीतील कोरोना पररस्थिती मनयंत्रणात येताना दिसत नाही. धारावीत दिवसभरात तब्बल ३३ नवे रुग्ण सापडले असून, बाधधतांची संख्ा ६६५ वर पोहोचली आहे. माहीममध्े ९ आणण िािरमध्े २ नवे रुग्ण आढळले आहेत. धारावीत मंगळवारी कोरोनाचे ३३ नवे रुग्ण सापडल्ाने बाधधतांची एकूण संख्ा ६६५ झाली. नव्या रुग्णांमध्े १५ पुरुष आणण १८ मदहला आहेत. कोरोनाने धारावीत आतापययंत २० बळी घेतले आहेत.धारावीतील कोझव्हड- १९ मवषाणूचा रै्लाव रोखण्ासाठी प्रशासन शथगीचे प्रयत्न करत आहे. आतापययंत ८३ हजार ५०० नागररकांचे स्कीमनगं झाले असून, २३८० जणांना संथिात्मक क्ॉरंटाईन करण्ात आले आहे. एकूण १९६ रुग्ण बरे झाले आहेत. माहीम आणण िािरमध्े अनुरिमे ९ आणण २ नवे रुग्ण सापडले. त्ामुळे माहीममधील रुग्णांची संख्ा ८० झाली असून, िोघांचा मृत्ू झाला आहे. िािरमधील रुग्णांची संख्ा ५६ झाली आहे.

नयेक्पयन सी रोडवरील इमयारतीलया आगमुंबई : नेटपयन सी रोडवरील ॲटलास या सहामजली इमारतीला मंगळवारी पहाटे भीषण आग लागली. अग्निशमन िलातील जवानांनी तातडीने धाव घेऊन इमारतीत अडकलेल्ा िोन व्यक्ततींची सुटका केली. नेटपयन सी रोडवरील ॲटलास या सहामजली इमारतीत मंगळवारी पहाटे ४.४५ वाजण्ाच्ा सुमारास अचानक आग लागली. सहाव्या मजल्ावर लागलेली आग िसुऱया मजल्ापययंत पोहोचली. तेथील इलेटक्टट्रक वायर व र्मन्वचरने पेट घेतल्ामुळे आग अधधक भडकली. आग लागल्ाचे समजताच झोपलेल्ा रदहवाशांनी इमारतीबाहेर धाव घेतली. अग्निशमन िलाने सकाळी ८.४५ वाजेपययंत आगीवर मनयंत्रण ममळवले.

मयाजी नगरसयेववकये चया कोरोनयामुळये मृत्यूमुंबई : मवरिोळीतील काँग्ेसच्ा माजी नगरसेमवका प्रमतमा बच्ाव (७७) यांचा मंगळवारी कोरोनामुळे मृत्ू झाला. त्ांना रमववारी कन्नमवार नगरमधील शुश्ूषा रुग्णालयात िाखल करण्ात आले होते. त्ांच्ावर वष्वभरापासून कक्व रोगावरील उपचारही सुरू होते. कक्व रोगाने ग्स् असलेल्ा माजी नगरसेमवका प्रमतमा बच्ाव यांच्ावर एका खासगी रुग्णालयात उपचार सुरू होते. तेथे त्ांची कोरोना चाचणी करण्ात आली. अहवाल पॅझझटटव्ह आल्ामुळे त्ांना तातडीने कन्नमवार नगरमधील शुश्ूषा रुग्णालयात िाखल करून कोरोनाचे उपचार सुरू करण्ात आले; परंतु मंगळवारी उपचारांिरम्ान त्ांचा मृत्ू झाला. त्ांच्ा मनधनाबद्दल हळहळ व्यक्त करण्ात येत आहे.

मुंबई, ता. ५ : कोरोना संसरागाच्ा भीतीने अनेक कारखाने बंद झाले आहेत; तर कामरार उपासमार टाळण्ासाठी रावाकडे परतत आहेत. मात्र चहा, नाशता पुरववणाऱ्ा चहा टपरी चालकांची मोठी आव्गाक कोंडी झाली आहे. मवहनाभराची उधारी फसल्ाने कुटुंबावर उपासमारीची वेळ आली आहे, अशी प्रवतवरि्ा मोहममद तौवफक शेख (छोटू) ्ांनी ददली.

कोरोनाववरोधी ्ुद्ातील वरळी कोळीवाडा पॅटनगाची चचागा सुरू असताना बीडीडी चाळतींच्ा पदरसरात रुगण वाढू लारले आहेत. ्ा भारात आताप्यंत ७० कोरोनाबावधत आढळले आहेत. अशा पदरवस्तीतही नारदरकांनी सावगाजवनक दठकाणी

वावरणे कमी केलेले नाही. वारंवार सूचना देऊनही ज्ेष्ठ नारदरकही घराबाहेर पडतात. त्ावर उपा् महणून महापावलकेने हा संपूणगा पदरसर सील करण्ाचा वनणगा् घेतला आहे. महापौर वकशोरी पेडणेकर ्ांनी मंरळवारी ववहडीओच्ा माध्मातून बीडीडी चाळतींमधील रवहवाशांना घरातच राहण्ाचे आवाहन केले.

वरळीत १२१ बीडीडी चाळी आहेत. चाळीतील प्रत्ेक मजल्ावर २० खोल्ा आहेत. ्ा वसाहतीत १० हजार कुटुंबांचे वासतव् आहे.
