On 1st December we successfully concluded Miracle Rotal 2018. We have been receiving appreciations from all the quarters of District 3141. I thank the convener PP Anand, and all members of ROTAL Team for their tireless efforts and making Miracle Rotal 2018 as the best ROTALs so far. Being a last month of the year, every one is already in the mood of celebration and welcoming new year. We celebrated Christmas with Pragati Kendra through ‘Dial a Santa’ project. The project was sponsored by PP Uma. This project is very close to our hearts as it was initiated by Late PP. Vinayak. We have donated Pressure Cookers and Roti Makers to The Respite Palliative Care Center at Dr. Ernest Borges Memorial Home, Bandra (E). This will help cancer patient’s relatives to cook their food and lessen their financial burden apart from having food of their own choice and taste. Now we have to gear up for OCV – Official Club Visit, scheduled on 4th January, 2019. I sincerely request all the members to be present on OCV day. It is like inspecting RCMM performance so far, accounts by District Governor and his team. We had great fellowship during Rotal Success Celebration and members also celebrated birthdays of Rtn. Shobha and myself which coincided with the Rotal Celebration. I wish all of you and your family a Very Happy, Healthy and a Prosperous New Year and hope we together continue to inspire and put smiles on the people around us. Happy New Year

Dr. Lucky Kasat a well-known pediatric surgeon and Rotarian attached to Jupiter , Kaushalya Hospitals. He can speak on varied topics and make it very interesting for the audience. He is no stranger to RC Mumbai Mahim having visited twice our Club in the past and delivered powerful talks on two subjects – 1) What’s your PEAK and 2) Chakravyuha. We were privileged to hear him once again at our Club Meeting on 8th December, 2018 on the topic – MAKING A DIFFERENCE. Dr. Kasat used several illustrations from empirical studies where people from different walks of life have made a difference through some very unique ways. For example, a man decided to show his mastery on playing piano using balls thrown at the right keys at the right intervals, balancing all the time the different balls in a rhythmic fashion. In another case, an advertisement professional introduced unique way of showing the hair flowing rapidly in the advt box as and when a train approached the station. This gave extra visual effect to highlight the value of shampoo being advertised. In conclusion Dr Kasat says that everyone can make a difference. For that we should have the right thoughts which should be accompanied with ‘good’ intention followed by concentration, commitment and control. The audience was spellbound by the powerful presentation made by Dr. Kasat who happily answered several questions that were posed to him in this interactive session. Rtn. Usha Seshan gave a vote thanks and a gift hamper to Dr. Kasat as token our appreciation from our Club.

The Respite Palliative Care Center is a joint initiative of Tata Memorial Centre and Tata Trusts established in June 2015 for patients with palliative care needs at Dr. Ernest Borges Memorial Home, Bandra (East). Tata Memorial Centre serves a large patient population from all over India and has a high hospital bed turnover rate. Patients in whom cure or control of cancer is not possible are prematurely discharged from hospital. Such patients with advanced cancer are referred to palliative care services and have unresolved physical symptoms like pain, vomiting, breathlessness along with psychosocial and emotional concerns, nursing issues, and poor quality of life. These needs remain largely unaddressed. Palliative care is an approach that improves quality of life of patients and their families facing problems associated with life-threatening illnesses. This respite palliative care center has been developed to address the palliative care needs of patients with advanced cancer and their families in a timely and sensitive manner, in a non-acute setting, away from hospital before they are sent home. The respite palliative care center is located on the 5th floor of the Dr. Ernest Borges Memorial Home, Kalanagar, Bandra East, Mumbai-400051. It has 13 beds, where patients from out-of-Mumbai and Mumbai are admitted for a short duration. 50-60% of patients admitted belong to the lower socioeconomic status and are free admissions.

Center has kitchen facility but patients don’t have utensils to cook the food. Hence the doctor in charge appealed for Pressure cooker, Roti maker so that Care givers can cook the food of their choice and taste. Patient can eat soft cooked food like Khichadi, vegetables and soft rotis. RCMM agreed on helping the center. On 17th December, RCMM members handed over the pressure cookers and roti makers. Rtn. Revati helped in buying the items.

December comes and children start dreaming about what Santa will bring for them. Every year RCMM celebrates Santa’s arrival with some school or ashram. Project was started by late PP Vinayak and is continued by his wife PP Uma by sponsoring the event. This year on 27th December we celebrated Christmas at ‘Pragati Kendra’, a school at Matunga for mentally challenged children from slum area. The children had arranged a beautiful program to welcome us. All children were in red dresses and Santa caps. Ten Rotarians from our club participated and really enjoyed the program. We distributed blankets and snack packets to the children. It was a great joy to see the children’s faces lit up with the gifts. Some of our members entertained the children with songs and stories. Rotarians Julina, Revati, Latika, Pradnya, Seema, Pradeep, Abhishek with his son, Neeta and Uma attended the celebration. Thanks to Rtn. Revati for buying the blankets and Rtn. Julina for organising the event.
