MAGIC MOVIE NIGHT  The September Alliance of  Illusionists meeting will be "Magic Movie Night." We will watch THE GREAT HOUDINI, the 1953 spectacle starring Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh.  We will have the big screen set‐up and explosive sound sys‐tem  ready  to go.  In  this Covid  season,  its  time  to  let your  family out  for a night, and what better than a free night at the movies. We will have inexpen‐sive packaged snacks and drinks, or you can bring your own. We ask that you wear your mask if you are not seated, just like in the restaurants. It’s a short 107 minute film and you can get the kids home at a reasonable time.

MINUTES OF THE AUGUST 2020 MONTHLY ASSEMBLY MEETING  The August 20, 2020 SAM Assembly 138 Alliance of  Illusionists meeting  turned out  to be one of  the most  fun meetings of our club year. After a few brief announcements, teams of AOI members and assistants performed an array of large stage illusion effects that President Cindy Bighorse and Secretary Bruce Chadwick pulled out of stor‐age. The meeting was held both face‐to‐face at the Illusion Warehouse with about 18 present, as well as on 18 people on Zoom.  First up was Mark Bynum who introduced the club to a Thayer Mummy Case illusion. After showing the cabinet completely empty,  the beautiful Zoey made her appearance complete with a colorful Blackstone butterfly cos‐tume. AOI Vice‐President  Jack McCoy  levitated his wonderful granddaughter Kaylin via a seldom‐seen Abbott’s Chair Suspension. Closing the illusion segment was TAOM Historian Joey Byers and Junior AOI member Ava with a rendition of the classic Canvas Covered Box.  After these presentations, Bruce Chadwick emceed as each illusion was discussed. The audience offered perform‐ance  ideas, presentation tips, staging techniques, and other brainstorming. This produced a  lot of  laughter and fun. In addition, other AOI members got their chance to try out a few of these grand props. Included were Jimmie and Lisa Fulce, Lonnie O’Lander, Al Fox, and Enoch Ng. It was definitely an evening of fun and mayhem, and no doubt the hallmark of the dynamic Alliance of Illusionists.  

 MINUTES OF THE AUGUST EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING  President Cindy Bighorse called  to order  the August 2020 Executive Committee Meeting of  the SAM Assembly 138 Alliance of  Illusionists on Thursday August 20, 2020 at approximately 6:00 pm. All officers were  in atten‐dance. The minutes of the July 2020 Executive Committee Meeting as published in the July issue of the SERVANTE were approved.   Treasurer Mark Bynum gave a Treasurer’s Report  indicating a previous  report balance of $1278.43. Since  that report balance, Bynum reported that two “payments” have been received, a new member application amount for John Colyer  for $19.12 and a TAOM donation  from  Jim McPherson  for $245. Bynum’s Treasurer’s Report  indi‐cated a new ending balance of $1531.90. Secretary Chadwick said the McPherson amount was actually a dona‐tion  toward  the 2020 TAOM Convention  and  should have been  credited  to  the TAOM PayPal  account.  It was agreed that this amount would be transferred from the BBVA Operating Checking Account to the TAOM PayPal account.  Vice‐President Jack McCoy reported no change in delinquent members paying 2020 dues. He reported that Steve Aldridge  and  John Colyer need  to do New Member  Introductions  to be  inducted  into Assembly membership. Cindy Bighorse appointed a “new dues payment structure” committee to investigate the possibility of the Assem‐bly helping pay member’s national SAM dues. Bighorse, Chadwick, and Bynum will comprise the committee.  TAOM President Joey Byers reported on the  latest regarding the upcoming 2020 TAOM Virtual Convention. Un‐der new business,  the  committee decided  the  September Assembly meeting would be  “A Magic Night  at  the Movies.” October would be an open mic night featuring bizarre magic, and the November meeting would be a Dealer’s Night with Bruce Chadwick promoting  sales at  the  Illusion Warehouse. With no  further business,  the meeting concluded at 6:54 pm.    

MINUTES OF THE ADDENDUM AUGUST EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING  President Cindy Bighorse called  to order an additional August 2020 Executive Committee Meeting of  the SAM Assembly 138 Alliance of Illusionists on Thursday August 31, 2020 at approximately 7:00 pm. Physically present at the Illusion Warehouse were Bighorse, Chadwick, and Byers. Joining via phone were all other Executive Commit‐tee members except Joe Rotio. The committee voted to go ahead with hosting the 2022 TAOM convention with Assembly member Bronson Chadwick serving as the 2020‐21 TAOM Vice‐President. With no further business, the meeting was concluded.

AUGUST “A NIGHT OF ILLUSION” A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS

          Greetings Fellow Magicians,  When the membership contains remarkable people, the strange and unusual happens.  2020 presented us with a series of inconvenient challenges. We held on to the hope of a physical Texas Associa‐tion of Magicians convention as long as we could. We realized we had to switch to a virtual format to keep the convention alive. Like you, I’m disappointed we were not able to meet physically in Fort Worth. The gathering of friends is an experience we look forward to and cherish. But there we were, meeting virtually.   On behalf of SAM Assembly 138,  I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to our 2020 President and fellow member Joey Byers. His  tenacity brought  the convention  to  fruition. You may not be aware, but planning a convention requires about two years of dedicated and hard work. To have all that change weeks before is not something that should be thrust on anyone.   Nonetheless, Joey made  it happen through re‐planning, re‐negotiating, and  learning new technology. He manu‐factured a successful event in six weeks. With great proficiency, he led his planning committee and tech team in a positive direction, never once believing this would fail. He had the full support of not only TAOM and his Assem‐bly,  but  also  from  the  SAM  National  Assembly,  the  talent,  and  other  volunteers who made  the  convention breathe life.   As  Joey stated earlier, they VOLUNTEERED their time and  talents  for  you.  Remember  them: David  Knight, Jeff Lanes,  Joel Zaritsky and all  the  talent! These are incredible  people. We  can’t  thank  them  enough  for their contributions.   We also thank the AOI support team, Bruce Chadwick, Jack McCoy, Mark Bynum, Jimmie and Lisa Fulce, De‐nise and the incredible Ava Byers. Because of you, the convention was seamless and very professional.   For  Joey Byers, he  is proof  that he did not allow  the environment of  the  last  few months  to  control him, but  instead  he  handled  the  abrupt  change with  re‐solve and strength of character. Thank you Joey. You bring honor  to  the TAOM We are privileged  to have you as a member of our Assembly.   Be like Joey! MAGA ‐ Make AOI Great Again!  But wait!!!  There’s  one more  thing.  Joey,  SAM  138 would like to present you with a commemorative quilt representing  the  year  2020. Hang  it  proudly  in  your office or use as a table runner.

THE 75TH ANNUAL TEXAS ASSOCIATION OF MAGICIANS CONVENTION  During  its  decades  long  history,  the  annual  Texas Association of Magicians convention has been held in major  Texas  cities  on  Labor Day weekend.  The family‐friendly convention has grown to an annual world‐wide conference with hundreds of magicians and their families in attendance.  Over  75  years  ago,  Austin magician  and  druggist Herman  Yerger  founded  the  annual  Labor  Day weekend picnics in Austin that led to the organiza‐tion of the Texas Association of Magicians (TAOM).   Yerger  and  his wife  Emilie  operated  a  tent  show, and performed their magic at carnivals and vaude‐ville  houses.  Yerger  was  also  a  tight  wire  walker and would always say that a fall left him paralyzed and confined to a wheel chair.      During World War II, Austin, Texas did not have a formal magic club. Magicians living in Austin often traveled to San Antonio for magic gatherings. One day Yerger came up with the  idea of a Mother's Day afternoon picnic  in Austin on May 9, 1943 and he invited the San Antonio group to attend.   

The  Sunday  gathering was  a  tremendous  success. This  led Herman Yerger  to plan and host three subsequent gatherings on the Labor Day weekends in 1944, 1945, and 1946. On property he purchased near Onion Creek in Austin, Yerger erected a club house, an open‐air stage, tables and a barbecue pit.   At the 1946 picnic, magicians in attendance proposed that Yerger should allow the annual picnics to be formalized into a state magician's organization. At first Yerger was against  the concept but warmed‐up after  it was proposed that he be  the  first president! The 1946 gathering of  the  third annual Yerger picnic  is now officially recognized by the TAOM Board of Directors as the  first conven‐tion of the Texas Association of Magicians.   

Hosting major magic convention takes months of careful planning. The small SAM Assembly 138 Alliance of Illu‐sionists  in  Fort Worth,  Texas  started  planning  two  years  in  advance  of  the  convention, which was  originally planned of course to be a face‐to‐face convention for Labor Day Weekend September 4‐7, 2020.   Then Covid‐19 came  into play and most 2020 magic conventions were  lost. Rather than cancel the momentous 75th annual TAOM convention however, Assembly organizers decided to refund all convention registration fees and produce a unique free virtual convention. Donations via a PayPal button on the Assembly website were still encouraged of course, and online registration was required to keep the Zoom event out of the hands of laymen, especially since magic secrets were revealed in the convention lectures.  On Friday afternoon September 4, the TAOM Board of Directors met on online. The evening show followed with a warm convention opening with 2019‐20 TAOM President and SAM Regional Vice‐President Joey Byers who gave words of encouragement and explanation. Joey introduced Joel Zaritsky, the President of the Society of American Magicians, and Stephen Bargatze, the President of the International Brotherhood of Magicians. Both presidents sent welcome videos to the TAOM attendees.

Then it was on with the Junior Stars of Magic Show featuring the magical talents of some incredible young magi‐cians.  Fourteen  year  old Ava  Byers  emceed  the  show which  included  award‐winning magicians  Tucker  Rudo, James Irwin, Kole Lee, Josiah Bunde, Danny Winter, and Hunter Tabor. 

 The Willard brunch convened Saturday morning with Scott Wells interviewing Gabe Fajuri of Potter and Potter auctions. Gabe gave some very helpful advice regarding disposing of one’s magic collection and how magic auctions work. This year’s Willard event was open to all at‐tendees, a first in the history of the event.  The Nick Lewin lecture followed. Interviewed by the incomparable Ray  Anderson  of  Austin’s  Esther’s  Follies, Nick  talked  about  his 

long and illustrious magic career, and the audience enjoyed snippets of vintage Lewin videos. 

 The TAOM Dealer’s Show  featured pre‐recorded videos by Harry Allen of Daytona Magic, Bruce Chadwick of the Fort Worth based  Illusion Warehouse, Patt’s Matts, Don Bursell of Don’s Magic and Books, Robert Baxt Magic, Rocco Silano and RPR Magic  Innovations, and Tax Magician Steven Snyder.  Later  that  afternoon,  Jeffrey  Alan  gave  convention  atten‐dees  a  virtual  tour  of  the  American Museum  of Magic  in Marshall, Michigan. Viewers marveled at the world’s largest public  collection  of  magic  apparatus,  books,  posters  and other magic ephemera.   

The evening show was emceed by Madame Cletus Von Sushi and her protégé Pix Smith.  The  audience watched  the  incredible  talents of Ariann Black, David  and Kylie Knight, DC Magic Girl, Robert Baxt, and Rocco Silano.  

 Bronson  Chadwick  led  the  Sunday morning  virtual Gospel Magic  service.  A  required TAOM general meeting followed. Magicians were then thrilled with an amazing lecture by Gregory Wilson.   Special  thanks  go  to  Joey  Byers and  Cindy  Bighorse  who  worked tirelessly to get the virtual conven‐tion launched.

JEFF MCBRIDE ‐ THE WHEEL OF LIFE OF THE MAGICIAN  

What role do YOU most often play when you perform magic? The Trickster, Sorcerer, Oracle, or Sage?  What fol‐lows is the philosophy of "The Wheel of Life of the Magician," created by my study of magicians for over 30 years. Some people pass through all of these personas as they grow in the art. Some develop their work and dive deep into one role. 

 There  are  a multitude  of  perso‐nas  and  characters  to  explore, and  many  shades  in  between each role.  In  creating  art,  there  are  3  pri‐mary colors: Red, Yellow & Blue. Out  of  these  can  emerge  many shades  of  color.  From  our  4  pri‐mary  magical  archetypes  of  the magician  flow  infinite, novel  and colorful variations! Below are just a  few  of  the  primary  arche‐types...hint.. you can always play more  than  just  one  of  these  4 roles! What  is  your primary per‐sona?   

THE TRICKSTER: is the disruptor who turns our reality upside down. Learn the ways and means of master Tricksters and how to use them to capture people’s hearts and minds.  THE SORCERER:   is the hero who captures and concentrates magical powers and focuses them to work their will upon the world. Yet, it takes more than mere tricks to become a Sorcerer; it takes discipline and many skills.  In this class, we will focus on theatricality, character, and presentation.  THE ORACLE: is the master of the  inner world, a visionary who taps  into our  inner  landscapes, can appear to read minds and can even predict our  future.  In modern  times,  these Oracles appear as mentalists, mind  readers, and mystery entertainers.  THE SAGE: is  the keeper of  the  inner secrets The real secrets of magic are only passed down  from master  to student…  in whispers. The Sage is a collector of knowledge, experience, and hard‐won wisdom.  When you tap into your inner Sage, you have the entire history of mystery at your fingertips.  Which one are you? The real secrets of these archetypes will be revealed in my upcoming class. Registration is now open! https://shop.magicalwisdom.com/event/the‐four‐faces‐of‐magic

PAUL MORLEY ‐ 1954 to 2020   Paul Morley unexpectedly passed away in April 2020, shortly after returning from a mission trip to India. He was 66. Paul leaves behind his wife Christine and their three children Helen, Andrew and Jonathan and four grandchil‐dren. His youngest son Jonathan writes: ‘My dad passionately and faithfully loved and served his Lord and savior with all his heart, and sought to make Him known to all he encountered.  

Paul’s ministry covered more  than  four decades, starting with Open Air Campaigners  in Manchester UK. He travelled to over 17 nations, training  and  equipping  pastors  and  leaders  in  India, Africa,  Eastern Europe, America and the Middle East. In his last four years, Paul was the Pastor at  the Cornerstone Christian Centre, Gainsborough, Eng‐land,  leading  the  congregation  through  an  exciting  time  of  change and  growth.  From  the  first  to  the  last, he  loved performing  school assemblies.  Paul  was  a  gifted  evangelist,  an  engaging  preacher,  an  inspiring teacher, a natural performer with a keen sense of humor. Little won‐der he loved using Gospel Magic in his ministry. It created many new opportunities to share  the good news, while  letting him tell his dad jokes,  bemoan  the  performance  of  his  favorite  soccer  team, Man‐chester United and gently pull the leg of his young volunteers.  

One of his first tricks was the Disobedient Cube, a brass pocket trick he used in street outreach. Later he devel‐oped an expertise in of rope magic, not surprising for an ex‐sailor. His years of experience gave him an astonish‐ing ability  to  improvise. Give Paul any prop, and within  ten minutes he’d have conjured up a polished biblical presentation  Paul leaves behind a significant legacy in Gospel Magic. He was one of the longest‐serving presidents of FCMUK, and founded to not one but  two  gospel  magic  companies,  Tricks  for  Truth  and  Mission Magic. He was a popular performer at  international Christian  con‐ventions  and  created  definitive  gospel  magic  routines  for  many popular  tricks.  He’ll  be  fondly  remembered  for  his  fun,  engaging, British style of gospel magic, which  inspired a whole generation of gospel magicians.   Paul had a heart to see people trained, equipped and realized  into their  potential  in  God.  He  had  a  huge  heart  for  the  poor  and would’ve  given  the  shirt  off  his  back  to  someone who  needed  it. Among his other projects, Paul helped to create the Bethany Project in Tanzania and worked amongst the Dalit people in India.   Finishing the Race Well to the very end, Paul fulfilled his calling to be an evangelist.  In his  final  sermon, preached hours before he died, Paul encouraged fellow Christians to let God draw closer and called unbelievers to enter a living relationship with God. The words of another Paul come to mind. ‘I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.’ 2 Tim 4:7 It was a great privilege for those that knew Paul and shared in his ministry.  RIP brother Paul Morley. Till we meet again . . . .
