Traditionally symbolized by a peacock or a fan, Oshun was the goddess of fountains, love, wealth, and religion for the African people of Brazil, Haiti, and Cuba. The club was founded in 1996 and provides members and their families not only a beautiful street parade but also a year-round outlet for wholesome entertainment and community service. Oshun calls its king “Shango.”

OSHUNThe theme of the 24th annual parade of the Krewe of Oshun is THE MESSAGE

IS LOVE. Led by a new captain, the krewe’s 18 fl oats are provided by New Orleans fl oat builder Phil Fricano and include ones entitled Heart to Heart, Play Some-thing Pretty and I’m Writing You a Four Page Letter. The parade traditionally includes more than 50 units and is led by the captain aboard his peacock fl oat. Reigning as Shango is Cordell Chambliss and Queen Oshun XXIV is Joan Ann Brown. Oshun’s “goddesses” are presented within the parade. Riding as guest Grand Marshal is radio personality Ms. Gina Brown. The parade includes a band contest. Personalized col-lectibles thrown by the club’s 300 male and female members include handmade fans, theme beads, peacock krewe beads, lighted batons, and lighted peacock rings and footballs. Oshun’s annual ball will be held at the Four Columns Ballroom on Febru-ary 7, 2020.

Named for the Egyptian Queen of the Nile, the Krewe of Cleopatra is one of the few Carnival organizations named for a historical fi gure rather than a char-acter from mythology. The fi rst Carnival club for women on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, the krewe was founded in 1972. For 31 years Cleopa-tra offi cially opened the metro parade calendar that culminates on Fat Tuesday. As her motto proclaims, “Her Beauty is Timeless, Her Age is Now—Forever.” In 2013 the club moved to the uptown parade route. Cleopatra does not have a king. www.kreweofcleopatra.org

Reigning as Queen Cleopatra XLVII is Amanda M. Roudolfi ch. Cleopatra presents a Battle of the Bands contest, and new high school bands to participate this year are St. Mary’s Academy and St Augustine.
