The Great Wall feb 16 Among the myriad sequels, adaptations and remakes hitting theatres, it’s a nice change to see an original story, and acclaimed director Yimou Zhang (Hero) has a doozy. He and star Matt Damon ask the question: What if China built the Great Wall not to keep out its human enemies but as a last defence against a supernatural creature? Resident Evil: The Final Chapter jan 26 The sixth and final entry in the most successful video game movie franchise ever sees Alice (Milla Jovovich) returning to The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation prepares for a final strike. T2: Trainspotting feb 9 The long-awaited sequel became a reality when director Danny Boyle managed to reunite the original cast, and the first teaser reveals them in all their downtrodden glory. Let’s all welcome back Ewan McGregor (Renton), Ewan Bremner (Spud), Jonny Lee Miller (Sick Boy) and Robert Carlyle (Begbie).

Hunger Games director Gary Ross has signed up to reboot the Ocean’s Eleven franchise with an all-female cast in Ocean’s Eight, and

there’s a lot to like in the all-star lineup so far. Academy Award win-ner Sandra Bullock is leading the pack of illegally-minded heroines, and she’s joined by three other Oscar darlings: Cate Blanchett (two-time winner), Anne Hathaway (one on the mantelpiece) and Helena Bonham Carter (two-time nominee). Stage wonder Rihanna and comediennes Mindy Kaling (The Office) and Nora “Awkwafina” Lum (Neighbors 2) bring the tally to seven so there's still hope your favourite actress will make the cut.

Antoine Fuqua (Southpaw) is the latest director to be court-ed for the Scarface remake, a project that has been long in development and which would see the action relocated from Miami to LA. The question is, who could possibly step into Al Pacino's shoes?

The Pokémon Go phenomenon has evidently reawakened our need to get our hands on those cute critters that have been part of our popular cul-ture for 20 years. Now filmmakers are latching on tight to that awakening as they announce plans for a live-action movie focussed on Detective Pikachu, a relatively recent iteration of the Pokémon world introduced earlier this year as a video game. What's more, the production has landed a couple of great writers—Nicole Perlman (Marvel films) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls)—to pen the script.

Desmond Doss was singular. There are few, if any people, who could or would replicate his actions. The humility he maintained in discussing his heroics is a testament to the mettle of the man. In fact, Desmond was asked permission for years to adapt his story into a film, and repeatedly declined, insisting that the “real heroes” were the ones in the ground. In a cinematic landscape overrun with fictional “superheroes,” I thought it was time to celebrate a real one.

Andrew Garfield truly inhabited the character and captured the essence of Desmond Doss, and the sup-porting cast and crew delivered in spades. I’m grateful for everyone’s contributions. It was a privilege and an honour to tell this story. MEL GIBSON

á A Conscientious Objector whose heroism turned him from a pariah to a hero in the eyes of his fellow soldiers, Desmond T Doss is played by Andrew Garfield in what is being hailed as a stunning performance. The film also stars Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths and Vince Vaughn.

“Here was a man who, in the most pure, selfless, and almost unconscious way, repeatedly

risked his own life to save the lives of his brothers.

Desmond was a completely ordinary man who did extraordinary things.”

NOvEMBEr 3 From Oscar-winning director Mel Gibson comes the true World War II tale of the epic battle to take the infamous Japanese stronghold, Hacksaw Ridge. The unlikely hero who turned the tide of the violent and bloody battle was a soldier who refused to bear arms, American Army

Medic Desmond T Doss (Andrew Garfield), whose heroism turned him from a pariah to a hero in the eyes of his fellow soldiers, and led him to become the first Conscientious Objector in American history to win the Congressional Medal of Honor.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENTWhen I heard the story of Desmond Doss, the first conscientious objector to receive the US Medal of Honor,

I was astounded by the extent of his sacrifice. Here was a man who, in the most pure, selfless, and almost unconscious way, repeatedly risked his own life to save the lives of his brothers. Desmond was a completely ordinary man who did extraordinary things.

When WWII broke out and young men raced to enlist, Desmond faced a predicament—he was as eager to serve as any man, but violence conflicted with his religious and moral beliefs. He refused to even touch a weapon. Desmond underwent intense persecution for his refusal to waver in his conviction, then went on to enter the hell of war armed with nothing more than his faith, and emerge one of the greatest war heroes of all time.

How big is Snapchat?Copter: Snapchat currently has more than 150 million daily users and an estimated eight billion photos/videos viewed daily. A shocking number of 9,000 snaps are shared every second! Snapchat has become a number one app in 13 countries and number two or three in 15 others, leading this phenomenal app to currently be worth 20 billion US dollars.

How did you get started on Snapchat?Copter: I started using Snapchat around three years ago. I became an avid user as it intrigued my creative self; limited Snapchat drawing tools meant I had to be very creative! I also enjoyed trans-forming mediocre everyday events into comical cartoons. Soon I, along with the best

worldwide Snapchatters, cre-ated a Snapchat community where we inspired each other to grow as international influencers. What gives me great pride and motivation is that I remain the only Middle Eastern Snapchatter in the international Snapchat community.

How are Middle East users taking advantage of Snapchat? Copter: Users are able to communicate with the rest of the world using this app—watching live stories streaming from all over the globe. This allows users from the Middle East to showcase their culture and view other

users' cultures, too. Users are even able to entertain themselves using Snapchat's filters that are very popular now. Middle Eastern

snappers may also follow other interna-tional snapchat influencers; allowing them to learn tips regarding fitness, beauty and food.

What’s this we hear about a GC Monster invading Snapchat? Copter: What I do is create characters for brands I work with. I created the ‘GC’, a hovering purple monster (named by Grand Cinemas’ followers) that represents Grand Cinemas on Snapchat every time I take over their account. I use it to make interactive stories with Grand's followers, such as games in which people can win many prizes.

Her breakout role in France came in 2003 in Love Me If You Dare, and Hollywood soon came calling. Marion’s

star shone in Tim Burton’s Big Fish and Ridley Scott’s A Good Year, opposite Russell Crowe. In 2004, she won

her roles a part in the Taxi comedy movie series.

2007 was the year that Cotillard won international acclaim for her unforgettable portrayal of Edith Piaf

Since then, Marion has starred in standout titles including Inception, Contagion and Rust and Bone.

On April 20th, 2010, One Of the world’s largest man-made disasters occurred on the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. The film follows a vital story that many have not seen: the story of the 126 crew members work-ing aboard the Deepwater Horizon that day, caught in the most harrowing circumstances imagin-able. They were skilled working men and women putting in a grueling shift in the hopes of getting back soon to families and lives ashore. In an instant, they were faced with their darkest hour, pushed to summon the courage to battle an unstop-pable inferno blaze in the middle of the ocean, and when all seemed lost, to save one another.

On that day, the Deepwater Horizon, an ultra-deep-water oil rig, was drilling deep in a well named Macondo about 40 miles off the Louisiana coast. Suddenly, the crew faced the greatest fear of all ocean rig workers: a ferocious blowout, caused

by pockets of unstable methane shooting up the pipes with deadly force. For 87 days mil-lions watched, hearts in mouths, as more than 50,000 barrels of oil a day gushed from the sea floor into the Gulf of Mexico. It would become the largest accidental ocean oil spill in human history. The impact to marine life and the questions of what went wrong are ongoing.

Deepwater Horizon brings that story to the screen with a gripping glimpse into the unseen world behind the global

Mike Williams, a family man who was overseeing the rig’s computers and electrical systems on April 20th, when everything he imagined could go wrong did. Oil rig workers are a notoriously tough and gritty breed. The work is physically punishing and ultra high-pressure—as workers grapple with complex equipment 60-feet above remote seas. Yet even for Williams, what happened that day was unprecedented. Williams knew the work was desperately

behind schedule, but he also knew the rig had sophisticated defenses said to be able to prevent even the worst blowouts. Nevertheless at 10pm that night, volatile methane shot up into the rig, and all the rig’s defenses failed. The result was a sudden, deadly explosion and a series of fireballs, as the shattered rig and its crew were shaken,

hurtled and drenched in combustible gas.

From that moment on, Williams was in a race to save his own life and those of his crewmates—each driven by the hope of making it home—in

an escape that seemed to defy all the odds.

For Berg, the story’s themes were vivid, stir-ring and a chance to shed light on an event most often talked about in terms of the environmen-tal, rather than human, impact. “I’m drawn to tales of human courage and of the human spirit trying to triumph over real adversity—and those elements are the heart of this story,” says Berg. “The men and women aboard the Deepwater Horizon were extremely intelligent and capable and they tried everything they could to prevent the blowout. disaster that took the lives of 11 workers. Filmmaker Peter Berg once again collaborates with Mark Wahlberg sharing an untold story of men and women—real life heroes—who faced extraordinary conse-quences with extreme bravery. The pair previ-ously teamed up for the Oscar-nominated Lone Survivor, and are current-ly filming Patriot’s Day, the story of the Boston Marathon bombing.

“It’s important to remember that 11 people lost their lives... In the middle of all the deserved attention for the oil spill, that heroism has almost been lost.”

â kurt russell plays Jimmy harrell, the offshore installation manager of the Deepwater horizon —essentially in charge of the entire crew.

ß gina rodriguez (Jane The Virgin) plays 23 year-old rig worker andrea Fleytas. “the true life andrea is a real character and gina brings great energy and an essential goodness to who she is as a person,” says producer lorenzo di Bonaventura. “she also captures what it’s like to be a 23 year-old woman in the middle of a crazy, ultimately catastrophic situation.”

The True STory ripped from the headlines

that 11 people lost their lives on the rig, and more were injured. In the middle of all the deserved attention for the oil spill, that heroism has almost been lost. This film is a chance to tell that story.”

The foundation for the screenplay, by Matthew Michael Carnahan and Matthew Sand, was a seminal New york Times article: “Deepwater horizon’s Final hours,” which was in turn the result of probing interviews with 21 survivors, as well as sworn testimony and written statements from others, creating the most detailed insiders’ account of what they saw happen-ing, second-by-second, on the rig. Carnahan then went further, conducting and distilling his own interviews, focusing in on the emotions and love of life that drive a person to find the heights of skill, bravery and compassion in the midst of disaster. The result became a mov-ing exploration of how ordinary people commit extraordinary acts when it matters most.

When real-life survivor Mike Williams—whom Wahlberg portrays in the film—came aboard

as a consultant it was a litmus test. Williams admits he had his doubts that a movie could do any justice to what he saw and felt that night. “once Pete told me ‘this is a story about survivors,’ I agreed to come on board. The oil field is not very well understood by outsiders,”

Williams points out. “It’s a very close-knit communi-ty, so I think this is a great opportunity to show the world what these men and women do out there.”

Wahlberg and Williams bonded before the film started shoot-ing and spent a lot of time during production

on and off set together. Says producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura: “What Mark brings is honesty and a real sense of blue-collar integrity. he brings out that American ethic of doing hard work, even when you’re working amid forces you can’t necessarily control.”

“We know very little about how we get our fuels. This movie is a chance to bring audiences inside.”

á Joining the ensemble cast is Dylan o’Brien (The Maze Runner) as the young floorhand caleb holloway.

126 crew members were working aboard the Deepwater Horizon, the deep-water drilling

rig located off the Louisiana coast, when it exploded in a ball of flames on April 20, 2010.

for 87 days, millions watched as more than 50,000 bArrels of oil a day

gushed from the sea floor into the Gulf of Mexico. It would become the worst environmental disaster in US history and the largest accidental ocean oil spill in human history.

after 2 days of searing flames, the remains of the rig sank 5,000 feet to the

ocean floor, leaving the well gushing beyond control, ultimately releasing 200 million gAllons of oil. The spill is surpassed in size only by the disaster in January 1991—during the Gulf War—when Iraqi forces intentionally released 250-300 million gallons of oil into the Persian Gulf.

11 crew members lost their lives and 27 were injured

at the time of the explosion, the rig was 6 weeks behind schedule, and costing a hAlf

million dollArs a day – pushing management to complete the well as fast as possible.

after several failed containment attempts,

5 months lAter— on September 21, 2010—the well was finally declared dead. Today, court cases are ongoing, coastal businesses are recovering, environmentalists are still studying damage to marine life, and 11 families are still mourning their loss.

to recreate the events of that day on film, the production team, including 85

welders, took 8 months to build the Deepwater Horizon set–in three separate parts, to 85% scale of the actual rig. The main set weighed in at 1,500 tons and utilised 1,600 tons of steel.

the shocking facts of the oil spill

For Berg, giving audi-ences a look at the human side of the deep-sea oil rigs we all rely on in the contemporary world was essential. Berg summaris-es: “We all use fossil fuels and petroleum. even if we drive a hybrid, we use fos-sil fuels. yet we know very little about how we get our fuels. This movie is a chance to bring audiences inside these gigantic rigs that are so technologically amazing, to show the men and women working on them who are so highly skilled and dedicated, and to reveal that even though we never see these men and women, they really are closely connected to our lives.” <

director ron howard’s authorised and highly anticipated documen-tary feature film is based on the first part of The Beatles’ career (1962-1966)—the period in which they toured and captured the world’s acclaim. The film explores how John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George harrison and ringo Starr came together to become this extraordinary phe-nomenon. It will explore their inner workings—how they made decisions, created their music and built their collective career together—all the while, exploring The Beatles’ extraordinary and unique musical gifts and their remarkable, complementary per-sonalities. The film will focus on the time period from the early Beatles’ journey in the days of The Cavern Club in Liverpool to their last concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco in 1966.

on January 15, 2009, the world witnessed the “Miracle on the hudson” when Captain “Sully” Sullenberger (Tom hanks) glided his disabled plane onto the frigid waters of the hudson river, saving the lives of all 155 aboard. however, even as Sully was being heralded by the public and the media for his unprecedented feat of aviation skill, an investi-gation was unfolding that threatened to destroy his reputation and his career in this thrilling feature from Clint eastwood.

based on the international best selling book, the film follows the true feel-good story of how James Bowen (played by rising British actor Luke Treadaway), a busker and recovering drug addict, had his life transformed when he met a stray ginger cat. The number one book has sold over 250,000 copies to date and continues to win over readers moved by James’s incredible story.

What it takes to look like a star

“You have to eat a really clean diet, a lot of kale and salmon. Basically you get all your nutrients and then

you train like crazy, but you just suck it up and do it.”Scarlett JohanSSon

“When I eat breakfast, I’ll have an egg-white omelette and fruit, or cottage cheese and a peach. For lunch, a salad. Dinner is usually vegetables and chicken or fish. During the day I’ll have some dried fruit, or a frozen

yogurt. I don’t really eat desserts or bread.”JeSSica alba

“i do a lot of aerobics, a lot of dance. there is a lot of jazz-ercise, the

ab-master. there’s the butt-blaster or whatever it’s called. and also

there is a lot of yoga.”GeorGe ClooneY

“i will not be outworked. Period. You might have more talent than me, you

might be smarter than me, you might be sexier than me. but if we get on the treadmill together, there’s two things:

you’re getting off first, or i’m gonna die.”WIll smIth

“i still battle with my deep-ly boring diet of, essen-

tially, yogurt and breakfast cereal and granola bars. i’m hungry all the time.”JulIanne moore

“my friend told me about this calorie app, myFitnessPal, and then I got obsessed with it, because knowledge is

power. I memorised everything, so if anything gets on the table, I literally know how many calories it is.”

kate hudSon

“Stay away from carbo-hydrates. keep a scale in your bathroom. try to be

optimistic. Skip beverages loaded with sugars.”

ClInt eastWooD

“I take 3.6kg weights with me whenever I’m staying in a hotel. It’s always good to do arm exercises when you’re watching television or talking on the phone.”

Jennifer aniSton

“i’m not eating dairy, that’s my biggest secret. it’s really hard on your hormones and it’s not

good. if you want to gain weight, eat dairy.”

meGan Fox

“It’s vital you allow your body to rid itself of toxins. sugar and processed food

cause your body to respond in a way that prevents

proper muscle growth.”bradleY cooPer

“everyone thinks getting in shape is 80% working out and 20% diet, but really it’s

the other way around.”rYan reYnoldS
