This month, we are delighted to help bring to a nationwide audience the new documentary College Behind Bars, the solo directorial debut of our longtime collaborator Lynn Novick. We are very proud to work with Lynn, a creative partner of Ken Burns and WETA on a wide array of critically acclaimed projects including Frank Lloyd Wright, The War and, most recently, The Vietnam War. Her new fi lm spotlights the Bard Prison Initiative, posing important questions

about education and its role in rehabilitation and redemption for the incarcerated. Through inmates’ stories, Lynn and her longtime producer and creative partner Sarah Botstein present a riveting testament to the transformative power of learning.

In other exciting news, WETA production PBS NewsHour on October 14 launched PBS NewsHour West, a news bureau based in Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The new bureau will help us better serve the broadcast’s audiences in the West and online. The bureau’s team — which includes correspondent and PBS NewsHour West anchor Stephanie Sy and senior producer Richard Coolidge — expands our news operation and updates PBS NewsHour’s Eastern time zone broadcast with additional reporting. The bureau also allows for closer collaborations with the region’s PBS stations and other media partners on the West Coast. Judy Woodruff remains primary anchor of the nightly broadcast and managing editor of PBS NewsHour. The Plastic Problem: Presented by PBS NewsHourWETA production airs Wednesday, November 27 at 10 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD;

available for streaming via the free PBS Video AppScientists estimate that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fi sh in the ocean. It is a crisis that’s been in the making for nearly 70 years, and the problem is clear: we create and use too much plastic. But the solution is murkier, as PBS NewsHour reports in the one-hour special, The Plastic Problem. With 40 percent of all plastic products — water bottles, bags, straws and utensils — used only once, plastic pollution is considered one of the largest environmental threats facing humans and animals globally. The program explores what’s being done about our extensive appetite for single-use plastic. Traveling from Boston to Seattle — and reporting from the shores of Costa Rica to the rocky beaches of Easter Island — the PBS NewsHour team uncovers not only the extensive environmental damage plastic has already caused, but also innovations and solutions in plastic management.

With The Durrells in Corfu, Poldark and Press wrapping up on Masterpiece this month, the series’ next presentation is The Chaperone, the result of a collaboration between the star, writer, and director of Downton Abbey — actress Elizabeth McGovern, screenwriter Julian Fellowes, and director Michael Engle. They reunite for a two-hour fi lm based on Laura Moriarty’s best-selling novel of self-discovery. Portraying a Jazz-age quest for personal fulfi llment by two markedly different women, The Chaperone follows Norma Carlisle (McGovern), the diffi dent chaperone to young Louise Brooks, destined to become a real-life silent-screen star, sex symbol and Roaring Twenties icon. Haley Lu Richardson portrays Brooks. The cast also includes Victoria Hill, Géza Röhrig, Campbell Scott, Blythe Danner, Miranda Otto and New York City Ballet principal dancer Robert Fairchild.

The drama begins in 1922, when Brooks is a teenage modern-dance sensation in her hometown, Wichita, Kansas. Winning a place at a renowned dance company in New York City, Louise requires a chaperone for her journey to the big city. Enter family friend Norma, middle-aged mother of grown-up sons and wife to an emotionally distant local attorney. She has her own reasons to sign on as Louise’s minder. Norma does her best to supervise rebellious Louise while embarking on her own mission — discovering exactly who she is from the orphanage from which she was adopted.

Tutankhamun airs Sundays at 7 p.m.Set in Toronto in the 1920s, a time when women could not become offi cial police offi cers, the drama series Frankie Drake Mysteries follows the city’s only all-female private detective agency as it takes on the cases the police won’t touch. Lauren Lee Smith (at left, as Drake) (CSI) and Chantel Riley (Race) star as an investigative dynamic duo who defy expectation and rebel against convention. Raised in Toronto by her small-time grifter father, Drake has an appetite for adventure. Her skill and guile as a dispatch messenger in World War I attracted the attention of her commanders, who recruited her into the world of espionage. After her cover was blown, she founded Drake Private Detectives. Eventually she meets Trudy (Riley), a young woman who yearns for a life of adventure, and takes her under her wing. The pair’s fearlessness gets them into trouble,

but they always manage to fi nd a way out. Frankie Drake Mysteries also premieres on WETA UK in November .This month, popular detective series Inspector Morse and Vera continue on Thursday nights starring, respectively,

John Thaw and Brenda Blethyn. Joining the Sunday-night drama lineup is four-part drama Tutankhamun, featuring the story of archaeologist Howard Carter’s epic search for the lost tomb of famed pharaoh Tutankhamun. Max Irons (son of actor Jeremy Irons) stars alongside Sam Neill and Amy Wren.

London: 2000 Years of HistorySaturdays, November 2, 9 & 23 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

A four-part series tells the tale of how London evolved to become the city it is today. Presenters Dan Jones (left, Secrets of Great British Castles), Dr. Suzannah Lipscomb (Elizabeth I) and Rob Bell (Great British Royal Ships) use special access in a variety of locations to explore the history of England’s capital. In the opening episode, the hosts spotlight London’s first 1,000 years: Jones goes behind the scenes of Crossrail — an engineering super-project — to examine unearthed treasures; Lipscomb relates the burning of the city by warrior queen Boudica; and Bell probes the building of the first London Bridge. Episode two examines medieval London, the era of the Black Death and power-hungry kings. The third installment explores how a new capital arose from the ashes of the Great Fire and expanded during the Industrial Revolution and Victorian Era. The final program, in December, profiles London as we know it today.

The Vietnam War & Veterans Day ProgramsWETA co-production airs Sunday, November 10, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and Monday, November 11, 6 a.m.-5 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD;

and streams via the free PBS Video AppOn November 10 and 11, WETA reprises the epic 10-part documentary series The Vietnam War, created by Ken Burns, Lynn Novick and producer Sarah Botstein in collaboration with WETA, and written by Geoffrey C. Ward. The 18-hour 2017 film tells the story of the war, featuring testimony from witnesses that include Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as Vietnamese combatants and civilians from the winning and defeated sides. Ten years in the making, the series brings to life both the war and the chaotic epoch it encompassed. The Vietnam War includes rarely seen, digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and revelatory audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon administrations. The film features a soundtrack of music of the era and original music as well.

Additional Veterans Day programming includes Military Family Documentary: While Time Stands Still (November 10 at 11 p.m.), following Marine Corps spouses coping while loved ones are deployed in Iraq. The Warrior Tradition (November 11 at 9 p.m.) spotlights Native Americans’ service in the U.S. military, and Scramble the Seawolves (November 11 at 10 p.m.) tells the story of a Navy helicopter unit that was the most decorated squadron in the Vietnam War.

streaming via the free PBS Video AppFrontline features the astonishing personal story of a young Syrian mother’s perseverance through the siege of Aleppo in a critically acclaimed film that won this year’s Prix L’Œil d’Or for Best Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival and Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary at the SXSW Film Festival. Unfolding as a love letter from filmmaker and young mother Waad al-Kateab (right) to her daughter, For Sama tells the story of Waad’s life through five years of the uprising in rebel-held Aleppo, Syria. Waad falls in love, gets married and gives birth to her daughter Sama — all while filming the cataclysmic conflict raging around her. The documentary, co-directed by Edward Watts (Escaping ISIS), chronicles a time of almost unimaginable darkness. Amid the horror, baby Sama gives Waad the strength to endure: fighting for her dream of a free Syria; creating the film; and offering a lens into the country’s war through her eyes.

New film produced in association with WETA premieres Monday-Tuesday, November 25-26

A new four-hour documentary film series directed by award-winning filmmaker Lynn Novick and produced by Sarah Botstein in association with WETA tells the story of a small group of incarcerated men and women struggling to earn college degrees and turn their lives around in one of the most rigorous and effective prison education programs in the United States — the Bard Prison Initiative (BPI).

Filmed over the course of 4 years in maximum and medium security prisons in New York State, College Behind Bars presents a stark and intimate journey into one of the most pressing issues of our time — the United States’ failure to provide meaningful rehabilitation for the millions of Americans living behind bars. The program, executive produced by Ken Burns, is a production of Skiff Mountain Films in association with Florentine Films and WETA.

Novick — whose directing credits include the Florentine Films/WETA co-productions The Vietnam War, The War and Frank Lloyd Wright — distilled with Botstein and their team nearly 400 hours of cinéma-vérité footage. The film

unfolds without narration through the personal stories of the BPI students and their families. All of the spotlighted incarcerated students are serving time for serious, often violent offenses. In deeply personal interviews, they describe their childhoods and family backgrounds, reveal why they are incarcerated, and express profound remorse, hope for redemption, and fears about life after prison.

“This film challenges conventional wisdom about education and incarceration and raises questions we urgently need to address,” Novick said. “What ultimately is prison for? Who

in America has access to educational opportunity? Who among us is capable of academic excellence? How can we break the cycle of recidivism? How can we have justice without redemption?”

In this era of mass incarceration, America is the world’s largest jailer, with more than 2 million men and women behind bars; 630,000 are released annually, and nearly 50 percent end up back in prison within five years, trapped in a cycle of imprisonment, release and re-incarceration. As one BPI student says on camera, “Prison is to punish. It’s not about creating productive beings. Individuals are not being prepared for anything other than what they’ve already been doing — crime.”

College Behind Bars reveals the transformative power of higher education and puts a human face on America’s criminal justice crisis. The film shows BPI students — most of whom did not finish high school — being held to the same high academic and intellectual standards as the undergraduates at Bard, a private liberal arts college in upstate New York. Broadway’s Best on Great Performances

Friday nights in November on WETA TV 26/HDand streaming via the free PBS Video App

In November, WETA TV 26/HD broadcasts arts series Great Performances’ new presentations of blockbuster theatrical productions. First to air is 42nd Street (November 1, 10 p.m.), recorded at the end of its 2018 run in London’s West End. The play follows the Broadway fable of a star-struck chorus girl dreaming of her big break and features songs “42nd Street,” “We’re in the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway” and other classics. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I (November 8, 9 p.m.) features Lincoln

Center Theater’s revival of the beloved musical starring Kelli O’Hara and Ken Watanabe (above). The production was also recorded during its 2018 run in London’s West End. Red (November 15, 9 p.m.), another 2018 West End performance, features Alfred Molina reprising his critically acclaimed performance as American painter Mark Rothko. Molina is joined by Alfred Enoch as Rothko’s assistant. Then, Much Ado About Nothing (November 22, 9 p.m.) presents Kenny Leon’s modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s comedic masterpiece, a Public Theater production recorded live at Free Shakespeare in the Park and set in contemporary Georgia. The all-black cast includes Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black) and Grantham Coleman portraying sparring lovers Beatrice and Benedick.

Il Volo: Ten Years Saturday, November 30 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

and streaming via the free PBS Video AppA new concert special celebrates the tenth anniversary of the popular trio Il Volo and features the group’s hits in addition to songs from its latest album. Set against the unique landscape and historic dwellings of Italy’s ancient city of Matera, the program showcases new arrangements of favorite songs such as “Grande Amore” and “Il Mondo.” The trio — (l-r:) Gianluca Ginoble, Ignazio Boschetto and Piero Barone — also performs tracks from its new album, Il Volo: Ten Years, including covers of classics such as “People” by Barbra Streisand and “Arrivederci Roma” by Dean Martin. Discovered by renowned manager Michele Torpedine (associated with Andrea Bocelli), Il Volo was fi rst introduced to America with a self-titled album in April 2011. Alan Davies returns as the inimitable sleuth Jonathan Creek in the drama’s fi fth season, which features three episodes. In the new cases, Creek has left his windmill and the world of professional magic behind him, but he fi nds there are still plenty of mysteries to tax his unique deductive powers. When Creek and his wife Polly (Sarah Alexander) move to the country, he is called upon to investigate a baffl ing murder attempt in a theatre. Then, odd events unfold in Creek’s village and need explaining, including a prowling nocturnal beast and a retired local psychic’s bold prediction. In the fi nal episode, a wealthy kidnap victim appears to pull off an act of teleportation. Can Creek again unravel the impossible?

Beaton, Ashley Jensen stars as a London PR whiz who has it all — money, an executive riverside apartment and a stellar career — but whose professional achievements have taken an emotional toll. Dreaming of a more peaceful existence, Agatha Raisin opts for early retirement in a picturesque Cotswolds village, only to fi nd herself immersed in a variety of mysteries. In the pilot episode (November 5), she settles into her new community and attempts to curry favor with the locals via a baking competition, but when tragedy strikes she must turn amateur sleuth. Jensen also stars in drama series Love, Lies and Records, airing Tuesdays at 9 p.m. starting November 19 on WETA UK.

Rowan Atkinson stars as novelist Georges Simenon’s French detective Jules Maigret in crime stories set in 1950s Paris. Series 1 (Friday, November 1) features “Maigret Sets a Trap,” in which the police superintendent is under pressure to apprehend a serial killer stalking the streets; and “Maigret’s Dead Man,” spotlighting the murder of a gambler with connections to a Czech gang targeting wealthy Parisians. Series 2 (Sunday, November 3) presents “Night at the Crossroads,” in which Maigret interrogates a suspected murderer who insists he’s innocent even as evidence points to his guilt; and “Maigret in Montmartre,” in which a stripper reports hearing about an imminent murder and then is herself killed.

Elgar, Gounod, Mahler &More on Choral Showcase

A soul’s journey, vespers, sacred histories, and music of drama and passion are featured this month on Classical WETA’s Sunday-night program Choral Showcase. On November 3, Richard Hickox conducts the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in Sir Edward Elgar’s deeply-felt choral masterpiece, The Dream of Gerontius. Based on an allegorical poem by John Henry Newman, a 19th-century theologian, poet, priest, and cardinal — and now, saint of

the Roman Catholic Church — Gerontius describes the journey of a pious man’s soul, from his deathbed to the afterlife. On November 10, Jeanette Sorrell conducts Apollo’s Fire and Apollo’s Singers in Claudio Monteverdi’s 1610 Vespro

Della Beata Vergine, or “Vespers of the Blessed Virgin.” This compendium of psalms, hymns and a Magnifi cat may or may not have been intended for a specifi c vespers service but is often heard complete in concert halls around the world. You can hear an entirely different vespers by Monteverdi — the rarely-heard “Lost Vespers” of 1641 — when Matthew Robertson conducts The Thirteen in three concerts in and around Washington, November 15-17.

Part II of music for St Cecilia will be heard November 17 with Charles Gounod’s Messe Solennelle for St Cecilia, and Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s Cecilia, Virgin and Martyr. This Histoire Sacrée, or “Sacred History” is a dramatic retelling of the saint’s death — a kind of mini-oratorio in the tradition of medieval morality plays. Sébastien Daucé conducts Ensemble Correspondances.

Another spiritual journey is depicted November 24 in Gustav Mahler’s massive Symphony No. 8, combining the ancient hymn Veni Creator Spiritus with the fi nal scene from Goethe’s Faust, wherein Faust’s soul is saved from eternal damnation. Our performance is led by Michael Tilson Thomas, who will be in town next month to receive a Kennedy Center Honor for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts, December 7-8.

Washington Concert Opera’s Sapho

November Operas on Classical WETA Opera House

During the month of November, Classical WETA’s Opera House showcases two operas presented by Washington Concert Opera during its 2018-19 season. Each broadcast, with associated commentary, starts at 1 p.m.

The fi rst is Sapho, Charles Gounod’s operatic debut. With a backdrop of the ancient Greek Olympics, the story is loosely based on the legend of the Greek poet Sappho and centers on a love triangle and murder conspiracy. The respected playwright Émile Augier provided the libretto. Over time, two of Gounod’s other operas, Faust and Roméo et Juliette became more popular, but Sapho remains a favorite for lyrical melodies, driven in part by the protagonist’s haunting, fi nal soliloquy, O Ma Lyre Immortelle. We’ll hear acclaimed mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey in the title role. Sapho airs Saturday, November 9.

The following Saturday, November 16, we present Gioachino Rossini’s Zelmira, one of nine dramatic operas written during Rossini’s service as composer-in-residence at the Teatro in Naples. The work was a great success when premiered in 1822 and helped launch Rossini’s international career. The story is based on the French play, Zelmire, about a courageous young woman determined to protect her father, King Palidoro, against a murderous usurper to the throne and defend herself against false accusations of murder and conspiracy. Singers Silvia Tro Santafe, Lawrence Brownlee and Vivica Genaux are showcased in this performance.

Tune in to Classical WETA Opera House for these consecutive Saturday performances of Washington Concert Opera, conducted by its artistic director, Antony Walker. Additional operas this month are Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice (November 2) from Teatro dell’Opera di Roma; Verdi’s Attila (November 23) from La Scala; and Bizet’s Carmen from LA Opera (November 30).

Local Concert Performanceson Front Row Washington

This month on Classical WETA’s Monday evening program Front Row Washington, we enjoy performances from four different concert series presented in the 2018-2019 season. On November 4 we listen to music from the Polinger Artists of Excellence Concert Series at Bender JCC of Greater Washington. It’s a combination of two concerts, starting with Miro Quartet’s performance of Franz Schubert’s Quartet in C minor, D. 703 and his Quartet in E-fl at Major, D. 87. The second half of the program features the Alexander Quartet with pianist Joyce Yang for the Quintet for Piano and String in F minor, Op. 34 by Johannes Brahms.

Our November 11 program features the Rolston String Quartet in their Bill and Mary Meyer Concert series performance at the Freer|Sackler. They start with a work that has a recognizable opening, a beautiful ascending line mimicking a gentle sunrise, Joseph Haydn’s Quartet in B-fl at Major, Op. 76 No. 4 “Sunrise.” The rest of the concert comes from 19th- and 20th-century France: Henri Dutilleux’s Ainsi la nuit (Thus the Night) and Claude Debussy’s String Quartet in F minor, Op. 10.

Pianist Alexander Kobrin continues his Beethoven Project on November 18 from Downtown Piano Works in Frederick, Maryland. Through a series of concerts, he is performing every piano sonata by the composer. In this concert,

Kobrin performs Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas No. 1 in F minor, No. 11 in B-fl at Major, and No. 4 in E-fl at Major.

The month’s fi nal program, on November 25, comes from Dumbarton Concerts — a performance by Trio Karénine (from Tolstoy’s heroine Anna Karenina). It’s a concert of 20th-century French music, featuring Gabriel Fauré’s Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 120, Philippe Hersant’s Trio, Variations sur la Sonnerie de Sainte-Geneviève-du-Mont de Marin Marais (a Washington premiere), Germaine Tailleferre’s Trio, and Maurice Ravel’s Trio in A minor. Tune in Monday nights at 9 p.m. for local concert performances on Front Row Washington.

November will be an exciting month for the National Symphony Orchestra under music director Gianandrea Noseda. On November 17, Noseda and the NSO will travel to New York’s Lincoln Center to perform Act II of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, starring soprano Christine Goerke, who has made such a splash as Brünnhilde in the Met’s recent Ring Cycle, and famed Heldentenor Stephen Gould, who recently distinguished himself at Bayreuth. (Washington audiences will be treated to the same program November 13-15 at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall.)

In honor of this momentous New York debut, Classical WETA’s NSO Showcase opens its 2019-2020 season with Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan, conducted by Maestro Noseda, who will also lead the orchestra in Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 and — from Richard Strauss’ provocative opera Salome — Salome’s Dance. British conductor Sir Mark Elder will conduct Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life), an autobiographical work that demands heroics from the orchestra’s horn section, in addition to lovely, lyrical playing by NSO Concertmaster, Nurit Bar-Josef (as the Hero’s wife).

It’s a powerful opening to what will be a “heroic” musical journey this season on NSO Showcase. We’ll present virtuoso performances from soloists including Leila Josefowicz, Denis Kozhukhin and Daniil Trifonov — as well as a collection of great works by Dvorák, Brahms, Wagner, Mahler, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky and, of course, Beethoven, in a celebration of the composer’s 250th birthday.
