Dear friends

After half a decade lsquoAnubhutirsquo dawn in our hostel to share the feelings lsquoAnubhutirsquo of

our H-1 inmates I assure that this magazine will help us to recollect the memorable moments

with our fellow inmates and friends It may pave way for peace and joy as and when we go

through this book In this edition the articles are presented in an organized way

The section starts with the inspiring and adieu message by Prof K V Venkatesh

(Warden) Wardenrsquos nominee general secretary and council members have presented their

annual reports which make us relish the events of year 2006

After crossing the council room and poem section Ravi will praise our lsquoQueenrsquo My

flings with lsquoQueen of the Campusrsquo by Patro and article on lsquoEco friendly Ganeshrsquo by Pravin are

really interesting Prasad Manish and Manoranjan will make us think for a while The creative

cartoons in our Anubhuti are appreciable Sartaj Ankit and Dharmendra prove the H-1 literary

skills in Hindi The soul of this magazine is the profiles of outgoing inmates which will

strengthen the bond between the inmates and outgoing inmates of our hostel

This magazine is unimaginable without the efforts of Subir K Nandy Kuldeep Singh

Anil Kumar and other editorial board members For which I would like to thank them I wish

Anubhuti to rise every year to share the queenites thoughts actions and achievements on

various fields I hope you would enjoy as you go on

It gives me great pleasure to hear that H1 is coming up with hostel magazine this

year Hostel magazine is a good souvenir that the outgoing inmates can get They can carry

a booklet as a memory for their life in Hostel - 1 I have great appreciation for the current

hostel council which has worked diligently towards the progress of the hostel I sincerely

thank them for their cooperation and hard work I take this opportunity to wish all the

outgoing inmates a happy and prosperous future career and life I also request them to

remember us in the future and keep in touch with the hostel

ldquoProud to be Queenites rdquo

First of all I would like to show my sincere gratitude and thanks to current hostel

council and Warden Sir who had shown their sole faith amp confidence and honored me as

Warden Nominee of ldquoQueen of the Campusrdquo for year 2006-07 I felt greatly privileged and

appreciative while serving for Queen of the Campus which has always been a special place

in my heart as I like its location in the campus I always felt lucky (believe others also feel

the same) that I got my stay in hostel one which is inimitable in the campus in terms of

assortment of junta (from region to religion Maturity to munificence) reaches from different

departments and communal places vegetation amp playing ground inside the premises variety

of food taste in the mess ease and generous facilities in each floor of every wing of the

hostel last but not least the diverse intellectuality of junta

I would like to take this opportunity to appreciate the current council for their

extraordinary effort to make the life more contented in every sense whether it starts from

comfort zone of maintenance work or supply of nutritious food for healthy mind and variety of

cultural activities along with ease of playing different games I sincerely thank them for their

teamwork and remarkable contribution which always makes us feel ldquoproud to be queenites

(H-1 inmates)rdquo

At last with this ldquoAnubhutirdquo I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the

outgoing queenites a joyful and flourishing future career and every success in their life I

From the Desk of General Secretary

The way I feel lsquoQueen of the Campusrsquo

To define the term lsquoBestrsquo in time domain is not an easy task as one could do it in

comparative domain in a finite time The oldest hostel in IIT-Bombay is placed in heart of the

IITB campus as known Queen of the Campus moves steadily and peacefully with the

Postgraduate students from all over India I thank and acknowledge H-1 predecessors for

implementing their practical ideas towards betterment of hostel activities and facilities I donrsquot

know to what extent I have volunteered and will volunteer for hostel-1 administration to make

the Hostel-1 lsquoBestrsquo in time domain but itrsquos true that lsquoQueenrsquo taught me how to develop

personality and interestingly how to deal with the most complicated trajectory in world the

human mind I hope as a General Secretary I could able to deliver my level-best sincerity

towards hostel activities

Itrsquos a routine work for the post of General Secretary to publicize the work done steps

taken in one year tenure First of all I should point out that we (council members) worked as

a team to make H-1 more and more charming place I believe the best hostel

facilitiesadministration can be provided if inmates cooperate with council members and take

their responsibilities in hostel Two General Body Meeting (GBM) were conducted and we

went through the feedback from inmates

The cultural activity in 2006-2007 were superb I expect inmates enjoyed each and

every festivals starting from Sri Krishnajanmastami (Dahi Handi) Onam Ganesh Chaturthi

Deewali Christmas Day (New Year Celebration) Holi We also celebrated Independence

Day (15th August) Republic Day of India (26th January) We organized two picnics one to

Khandala and another to Sea Beach (Kashid)

For the cleaning and leveling of ground in basketball court between 3rd and 4th wing

lsquoShramdanrsquo was conducted Soil and garden equipments were purchased for having green

lawns between the hostel wings and for maintaining the Garden Plantation in various places

of hostel was also done to make hostel environment cool

We tried to provide geysers and washing machine in each floor and water cooler in

each wing keeping in mind the population of each wing A plasma TV (42) have been

purchased The problem of unavailability of water in toilet and bathroom in 3rd wing 1st floor

was solved Security lights and lights in newly installed parking stand and in connectivity

road was installed Several decisions like painting of hostel leveling of playing grounds and

leakage problem in mess areas have been put to institute level

To control the pest in mess and in cooking area one-year contract was given to ldquoPest

Control of Indiardquo for having hygienic environment in mess Mess menu was regularly

checked and suggestions from inmates were well taken We tried to motivate cooks and

helpers to improve the quality of food by token of appreciation We succeeded to implement

the ldquoComputerized Mess Billingrdquo and Tally Package in mess administration for transparency

in mess billing We are trying to implement the card system in mess which will minimize

waste of food

I believe sports team did a fantastic job Inter-wing tournaments (Volley Cricket and

footer) were conducted to motivate the inmates for inter-hostel tournaments During the

inter-wing tournaments the enjoyment that we shared is unforgettable H-1 volley team won

the inter-hostel volley tournamentrsquo07 Hostel one participated in inter-hostel cricket football

and basketball tournamentsrsquo07 and crossy Sports team already announced to provide a

newly designed jersey for participants in spots events New books are added to Hostel

library made available to inmates so that bookworms donrsquot waste their time from reading

books After half a decade hostel magazine lsquoAnubhutirsquo takes rebirth to share the feelings of

H-1 inmates

We decided to raise the alumni fund by introducing new hostel vacation form

Outgoing junta should register in Alumni register in H-1 web site so that H-1 inmate can

contact them Webpage is kept updated and computer room and network facility was up to

date

I am thankful to our warden Prof KV Venkatesh and associate warden Prof TN

Singh for their support towards the successful administration of hostel-1 Nevertheless I

thank Mr Anil Kumar his constant encouragement and motivations propel me to volunteer in

hostel activities

From the Desk of Maintenance Councilor

Parivartan amp Unnayan

First of all I would like to thank all hostel Inmates for their valuable suggestions and great

ideas I was in the Council as a Maintenance Secretary in 2004-05 and was elected again as

a Maintenance Councilor in 2006-07

After being elected as the Maintenance Councilor the first work I had done was to

replenish the first aid box and arrange for a new telephone directory We had a meeting with

the owner of Patel Xerox in that a fixed price of 50 paisa per page printout was finalized In

each and every floor the Washing Machines and Geysers are working well In this year we

have purchased 3 new Washing Machines and installed 6 new Geysers in 6 different floors

We have purchased 2 new Water Coolers for our hostel We have installed a small one in

the 1st wing and another big one in the 3rd wing With these two new ones now there is a

Cooler in each and every wing We have signed contracts for annual maintenance of Water

Coolers and all Aqua Guards The Compressor has been shifted from 3rd wing to a common

place near the 1st wing and is running without any complains Asish Das (Maint Secy)

initiated the process of updating the Occupancy Chart and Navneet Rai (Maint Secy) has

finished the process beautifully

The maintenance team has also provided Cloth Liner for every floor in the hostel

The institute provided 20 new Computer Tables and we have distributed it among the

inmates on first-come-first-served basis We have allotted the vacant rooms also on first-

come-first-served basis I have requested for the beautification (exterior and interior painting)

of Hostel 1 and hope to get it done as early as possible After too many applications Institute

is finally renovating the roofs of our hostel We have successfully finished the electrical

wiring process throughout the hostel We have purchased a few anti-slip carpets for mess

and laid them in the wash-basin area to prevent any accident or injury to inmates The Water

Cooler of the mess has been repaired For the convenience of H1 inmates we have

prepared a schedule for the house-keeping staffs and taken effort to implement the same

We have repaired the fountain and beautified the Queen to make our hostel more appealing

and aesthetic We have purchased and painted 4 new Felicitation Boards for Best Outgoing

Inmates Warden Nominee Best Fresher and for Hall manager Warden and Associate

Warden Renovation of the PA system is under process

Parking stand has been broadened after so many applications Institute has provided

the lighting arrangement at the parking stands as well as the approach road after repeated

applications We have also prepared and implemented the parking rules for parking stands

We have provided Cycle Stickers to each and every inmate to distinguish H1 cycles from

others

Navneet Rai (Maint Secy) helped me to procure a new Remote for TV and a new

DVD player for showing movies on alternate Saturdays With the help of our GSec

Debasish Panda and Warden Nominee Anil Kumar we have bought one new Plasma TV

for our hostel We have also repaired the old TV in the upper lounge To watch the World

Cup Cricket we have provided new bedding in the lower TV lounge There is a plan to buy

one music system in exchange of our old TV in upper TV lounge With the help of the

Computer Councilor Sundeep Rao we had initiated Video Streaming in Hostel-1 but due to

the new rule of the Institute we had to terminate it

With the help of our previous Maintenance Councilor Gourav and present Sport

Councilor Anirudha we received one new TT table from Institute Our Garden Secretary

Swaren has done a great job to level the Volley Ground planting trees and taking up the

issue of cementation of the background of wing 4 with institute authorization We have also

arranged Shramdan twice with the help of other inmates and Council members to level the

volleyball court and for plantation

We have given our best effort to establish a system as transparent as possible and

perform within it I would request and appeal to the coming council to continue the system

with further refinements amp improvements wherever necessary There were no reservation for

or priority given to Council members and I would like to thank all of them for their open-

hearted support in this Abhijit Sarkar Suryasarathi Bose Pravin and Prashant Kodgire

Sashi Bhushan Arya Shailendra Sirji Palpandi Raja VijayaKumar and many other inmates

have sent their valuable suggestions and helped me a lot in different issues Our warden

Prof KVVenkatesh has always cooperated with us He listened to all our suggestions and

grievances very patiently and was always there in the need of the hour I would like to give a

special thank to our Hall Manager Prasadji and Varghese for doing their jobs marvelously

and providing a full hearted co-operation to Maintenance Council Thanks also to all the

inmates who from time to time have brought different issues in the light and have given

valuable suggestions and help

Working for H1 has been a great experience and an invaluable learning process for

all of us which I am sure will help us in fulfilling all new responsibilities we take up in our

future life and career

From the Desk of Cultural Councilor

H-1 Culture It was an enthusiastic response to all cultural events throughout the year I hope we

celebrated all the important cultural events of the year 2006-07 We started with a talk on

ldquoVictorious Youthrdquo by Swami Br Shilesh Chaitanya from Chinmaya Mission on 3rd June He

motivated us to have a noble goal for our life Then we organized picnic for the rainy season

on 24th June After post poring three times we organized a memorable picnic to Lonavala

where we played in the waterfalls for hours

Our council has conducted orientation program to new inmates of H-1 Then we had

freshie welcome program New inmates introduced themselves and conveyed their cultural

and sports capabilities It helped us to figure out the freshers who were good in writing

debating anchoring football cricket etc Warden and associate warden wished them for a

nice stay

On 15th August we decorated the hostel with flags and flowers Prof T N Singh

(Associate warden) hoisted our tricolor flag Few inmates gave their patriotic thoughts in

front of Junta Vijayakumar gave talk on the achievements of India in different fields of

technology

16th August was Janmashtami We celebrated by breaking the Matka hanging in

between the II and III wing over the football ground The pyramid formed by us fallen for

many times and at last we did it All had a mud bath that day We had a divine night by

having bhajans Inmates enjoyed the bhajan along with music secy Prasanta Dasrsquos Tabla

In the end of August we celebrated eco friendly Ganesh Utsav Subir Nandy helped

me to prepare the eco friendly Ganesh Idol through the workshop organized by Shakti club

in our campus We took 2 days to prepare it Our Ganeshji was big and carved among the

idols prepared there We had an eco friendly decoration from the coconut and other suitable

leaves On the first day we had Atharvashirsha and Sundarkand chanting Ravindra did

Pratistapana Ganeshji enjoyed the two hours Puja along with us We continued pooja for

four more days and filled the holy atmosphere in our hostel Last day we had Ganesh

Visarjan at Powai Lake We enjoyed by dancing with inmates of H12 H11 and Tansa

In the first week of September we celebrated Onam In the early morningfew of our

friends bought the flowers from Dadar Anil designed Athapu (Rangoli of Flowers) Along

with the Deepam it looked wonderful We enjoyed the Onam food in the dinner

On the day of Dashara Navneet and Kamlesh prepared a model of Ravana using

papers and cardboards We burnt Ravana using crackers on that rainy evening It will be an

unforgettable day for us

In the Diwali festival we decorated the hostel with lights and potted plants in the front

corridore Inmates appreciated Rangoli designed by Anil Saji and Santosh Rahul Shukla

performed the puja The deepam which we arranged over the terrace and corritodore was

really photogenic view and we captured the same in our camera We had feast that day from

morning to evening We burnt soundless crackers to avoid disturbance to the birds Masti

under control without hurting to animals was more enjoyable and gave very much

satisfaction to us Musical night on that day with Prasantarsquos tabla was a memorable moment

We had second picnic on 9th december to Kashid beach We enjoyed 3-4 hours in

the seashore After having a nice lunch we had a photo session before starting our back

journey During X-mas we decorated the X-Mas tree with colorful ribbons and balloons That

night we shared cake and chocolate and enjoyed a lot

We celebrated New Year with dance and music in the TV lounge On 7th January

Virendra Bhojwani organized talk on ldquoArt of Anythingrdquo A spiritual person Mr Lee James from

Brahamakumarirsquos came to enlight us about the art of spirituality We had a nice interaction

with him On 19th January Mr Hira Ratan Manek shared his experience about his practice of

Sun gazing We find his talk very much interesting and useful for our healthy life The 3rd

cultural event we had in the year 2007 was Republic day We celebrated in patriotic

environment by having flag hoisting and sweet distribution

On the holy pournima we burnt the Holika On the second day of holy we played with

colors and water We also had a Dhol to keep us dancing We managed to put colors on

those who hide themselves in the room That day we had somewhat strong bhang

Cultural team also motivated the inmates to write ldquoThought of the Dayrdquo on the black

board at the entrance of our hostel This became the source of inspiration for the readers I

hope these Cultural programs helped us to keep our culture alive in the hostel

The flame kept burning by cult secy Ashwani Sharma and Anshul Nigam without

whom these events even not possible My sincere thanks to all the inmates involved in all

the cultural activities

QUEEN SPORTS

With all the kings of research living in H1 it would not be a surprise if Hostel 1 had a

lesser affection towards sports But the all-rounder inmates of H1 have proved themselves

in many sports event in the past and they are still doing it

Intra hostel sports events received a great enthusiasm from H1 junta We conducted

inter-wing volleyball cricket and football tournaments No words are enough to express the

zeal shown by my fellow inmates

Inter-wing volleyball was won by wing 4 in a tough match against wing 3 Inter-wing

football was no different than that of volleyball Same two teams competed and again wing 4

scored a victory in a thrilling game After being on equal scores after two halves and extra

time the match was resolved by shoot out Cricket was a massive event being the game of

India This time final battle was between wing 3 and wing 2

Being well practiced in home tournaments H1 junta made their mark in inter-hostel

events as well Volleyball trophy was retained with H1 in flying colors The final match was

between freshie team and hostel 1 Hostel 1 participated in football and cricket as well We

didnrsquot make it to championship but defeating us was a challenge for the wining team

Now at the end of a year as one cycle is complete Its time to cherish the spirit of hostel

one The sportsman ship shown by my friends andhelliphelliphellip

From the Desk of Mess Councilor

Hello Let me have a privilege to summarize improvements and accomplishments

regarding the mess during the tenure of our Council 2006-07 Mess as a delicate part of any

hostel council should be given proper attention for good administration Mess of the Hostel -

1 constitutes total 19 permanent staff which include five cooks and three temporary staff

along with one mess manager The council body consist a mess councilor and a mess

secretary (Hadia Nanji J)

From last one year the mess has seen many milestones Aim was to maintain good

food (not only for taste but also for health) with minimum hike in the mess bill As our mess

runs for whole year unavailability of mess staff during summer vacation is the prevalent

difficulty at the beginning days of any mess council In spite of this proper balance was

maintained in the expenditure on over time and quality of the food Daily activities such as

vendors quotations complaint and suggestion register mess staffs muster etc were

regularly checked keeping constant eye on better improvement Frequent meeting and

sometimes-personal conversation with all mess staff filled the gap between them and the

mess council Every process in the mess was reported in efficient format to track every

activity at a glance eg store book format assignment of duties among mess staff etc

Pest control is essential process which has to be followed in the mess Good quality of pest

control was implemented by well renowned private company PCI (Pest Control of India) Ltd

and service feedback was constantly recorded about the same It helped in maintaining

hygienic environment in the mess

Menu was frequently revised and the mess council always endeavored to introduce

new items such as Karela Tomato Omelet etc Though frequent inclusion of Potatoes is

necessary to prevent rise in the mess bill menu was nicely managed to reduce their

dominating percentage More green seasonal vegetables were introduced in the menu to

enhance nutrition values in the food

Greatest achievement as we see was the implementation of on-line mess billing It

brought good transparency in the mess related activities and also helped to reduce

percentage of human errors which generally encounters in large calculations Link between

vendors and the mess council was eradicated and direct management was implemented It

helped in better range of control and wide choice Monopoly of a particular vendor was

restrained and several good parties were introduced It created a healthy competition among

them to have wide variety of food items Introducing awards such as Best Cook and Best

Helper Awards always provoked moral of mess staff It motivated them effectively and

emerged the wish in them to serve better Mess duties had never been assigned

permanently to any particular staff or a group of staff but were circulated among all of them

It enabled them to closely experience each job and equality was maintained among them

which was most important Weekly offs of all cooks were re-scheduled as per the menu to

get full expertise of their skills Helpers were also given a chance to cook which stimulated

their cooking skills

With this as a Mess Councilor I would like to request all H-1 inmates to cultivate the

habit in them of praising all mess staff whenever necessary It gives them a motive to work

Monotonous job leads to fatigue in a human Your two soft spoken and praising words can

create tremendous interest in them regarding their job It is not just a doctrine but an

experience Nice words really work

My stay in queen of the campus for the last

five years is one of the wonderful experiences I

ever had in my life The advertisements that boost

the facilities of upcoming apartments read ldquoOne

minute walk to swimming poolhellip One-minute walk

to gymkhanahellip One minute walk to soccer

groundhellip One minute walk to open air

theatrehelliprdquo These points can hold authentic for our

hostel Our hostel is the centre of attraction in this

intellectual valley IIT-B The first thing one can

notice while entering the hostel would be the

ldquoThought of the Dayrdquo ndash A quotation (from

collections) written by the inmates of H-1 which

may emphatically motivate the visitors The

spacious lounge huge mess with excellent workers

and ever improving quality of mess food are the

traits of our queen Gorgeous garden with plenty of

trees such as wild badam giant banyan toddy

palm rain tree Mango tree jackfruit tree

breadfruit tree kanchans gulmohor coppor pods

are the homes for the crows pigeons and monkeys

These trees gives a pleasant environment to our

hostel

Our hostel is a nest for the aspiring

researchers who sleep with their groaning research

problems and wake up with the new ideas Our

inmates are good in both academics and in sports

Our successive triumphs in inter hostel volley ball

tournaments is an illustration which proves this A

well-equipped hostel gym and good playgrounds

are the places where we can mould our body along

My flings with lsquoQueen of the Campusrsquo

When I thought of writing for hostel

magazine I was suddenly overwhelmed by

incidents ideas and sweet memories of five and

half year of staying in hostel one I have been

staying in hostel one since the day I joined IIT

Bombay It was an awesome experience with all

the good (some mixed) feelings I had also resided

in various hostels before coming to IIT but staying

here is something different experience altogether

The five and half years are the longest time period

in a single hostel in my life (probably I would not

stay longer than this in future) This journey has

really been an enjoyable and a very happening

period of my life among a bunch of enthusiastic

postgraduates Above all never mind these are the

people who contribute some of the meaningful

output in terms of technological advancement

through papers and patents for which IIT is proud

of its research I would call them enthusiastic

postgraduates because apart part academic

commitments they are also involved passionately

on their own interests Some are on sports Some

are on movies cricket fitness books politics

research gossiping etc etc I also happen to be a

victim of many such syndromes Classical music

gym yoga personality development etc to name a

few I met many interesting people during these

couple of years and made many good friends

The culture of hostel one is something special As I

thing this is one of the happening hostels in the

campus You would feel privileged by staying here

over many other hostels as this is nearer to the

SAC and the swimming pool I also felt the same

but up course not for having a gym in the SAC

but for seeing all the important events of MOOD

INDIGO with in a few yards The activities in

hostel one is galore People are really sweating out

for all these activities As an inmate my

contribution for hostel activities is only up to

cheering up lsquoJuntarsquo by being a spectator (not so

mute) in various events The informal

relationship the (no) research atmosphere the

lounge the sports the mess cribbing of Junta are

some of the aspects of Hostel One worth

mentioning

Sports and cultural activities

Let me share some of my success stories in

sports I started my lawn tennis career after coming

to IIT It has never been late as they say it is better

to make late than never But that was a different

story that it lasted for not more than a couple of

days I also tried my hand in table tennis (TT) and

decided not to continue as I felt it is a boring

game Another interest that I had before coming to

IIT was swimming I rekindled my interest after

coming here and as I mentioned felt very

privileged for staying in a hostel which is just in

front of the swimming pool I thought this was the

golden opportunity to become a national champ

But some how I managed to make my mind to

give more preference towards research Sports are

the one department where the maximum inmates

participate in one or the other game from indoor to

outdoor games We are not behind any best hostels

in sports of IIT In volleyball we are like

Australians in cricket In football we have not

been that lucky This is the game where I made a

late entry as I started my football career lsquoagainrsquo

after coming to hostel one hoping to become a

Ronaldinho one day Cricket is culture of India so

as hostel onersquos

Hostel one celebrates almost all the

festivals that are celebrated across the country such

as Independence day Republic day colours day

(Holi) Crackers day (Diwali) Harvesting day

(Onam Gudi Padwa Pongal etc) Sisters day

(Rakhi) Mothers day Brothers day (Bhai Duj)

Valentines Day Christmas Eid etc to name a few

We also do participate in the popular PAF

(Performing Arts Festival) in IIT like other hostels

do But for us the PAF is lsquoPaying for the Arts

Festivalrsquo Overall to say about the cultural

activities we are making progress and you will

come to know more about it on the Hostel day

The Television and the Lounge

Hostel one sans a television is something

unimaginable No inmate can dare to dream of

replacing a television out of hostel one Both are

inseparable Our relationship with outer world is

through TV and watching TV is our birthright Our

maintenance team is always prompt to take

necessary steps to keep the hostel TV always in

good condition In fact we have two TVs with

separate rooms I doubt if any other hostel in IIT

has this kind of privileges In my staying there

were very few occasions when the hostel TV was

not working In fact the newly installed plasma

TV is a source of inspiration for many inmates

including myself to spend most of the time in

hostel (after all we should socialize ourselves)

Watching cricket MTV Music India Aaj Tak etc

(do not confuse with etcetera this is the lsquoetcrsquo

Music channel) which I have never enjoyed

before I came to hostel one Recently the laughter

challenge was one of the craze shows in the prime

time I have also been the part of the mob and

could be noticed easily with other inmates

laughing at some miserable jokes (not always)

In hostel TV room the remote operatorrsquos

job is a tough job Itrsquos a voluntary job He has to be

an expert He has to be very sharp in the timings

for example which channel to be switched over in

between the gaps of two overs of a cricket match

and has to have some prior knowledge For this

you have to really work on reading others minds or

moods as quickly as possible I found the job very

challenging as once I was holding the remote

controller some people behind me shouted

lsquochaaaangersquo I hurried but made some failure

attempts and the people behind me repeated the

same then I was horrified and decided not to carry

it any more I was new to hostel then Watching

TV is another culture for us In fact while having

our lunch together in hostel mess recently some

friend suggested that we should have TVs (two

both sides each for convenience) in mess so that

we would not miss a single ball of a cricket match

That was an incredible idea I hope the esteemed

council would appreciate it

Hostel one lounge is the best place to have

endless chit-chats with friends and to read

mindless gossips of Bollywood stars and Page3

celebrities by sitting on round-arm-rest chairs

which I enjoyed thoroughly In fact you could take

a brief post-lunch nap on those comfortable chairs

The recent effort by our council by putting bed like

cushions in front of the TV is a good move This is

the place for socialization for hostel inmates Most

of the people are being known to each other here

only

The Mess and the Food

Hostel one is famous for its 365 days-

running mess in IIT and the mess related issues are

most delicate issues to be handled by our council

members For which the mess council has to

always go through a roller-coaster Hostel one does

some social service through the mess by feeding

many mouths on the campus and off the campus

(Some pay for the service and some do not But we

never heed for it) For instance once a guy along

with his friend came to hostel to repair one of our

TVs (remember we had two TVs then now three)

it was lunch time I became happy to see him as

our lounge TV was going to be repaired He and

his friend enjoyed their lunch in our mess after

examining the same In the evening when I came

back from lab for my irony the TV was not

working Later I came to know from my friend

that he could not repair it No matter hostel one

mess is doing a good job Itrsquos a paradise for many

such people

Food in hostel one mess is blend of a north

and south Indian cuisines It gives both (neither)

north and (nor) south Indian flavor I believe that

our mess has the capability to defeat the Sujata

Palace (The famous restaurant just outside the IIT)

in making spicy dishes (Some of you may agree

with me) The sweets in hostel one mess are most

delicious and talked about (many of you agree with

me) I thing that food is the only department

where we see an invisible division among different

parts of India east west north and south I found

that lsquono-restrictionrsquo on the wastage of food is an

alarming issue to be discussed

Cribbing

Cribbing is in hostel onersquos gene (Cribbing

can be defined by virtue of which without taking

any responsibility expecting everything to be in its

place) We hostel one inmates including myself

expect the same Some of the typical cribs are

washing machine not working no cooler in so and

so wing mess food is not good and many more

At last

But not the least I would like to thank all

the people I come across during these valuable

years to make my hostel life enjoyable I wish the

hostel and my fellow inmates all the success in

their endeavors in the years to come

Eco-friendly Cult Fest Celebration and

Spirit of Queenites

Hindustan is sacred and holy place where

the vast number of Gods and Goddesses are being

worshiped A new mantra has emerged in recent

times to celebrate the ethicalcultural worshiping

of these deities With evolved new understanding

of science and technology peoplersquos outlook has

been changing they are becoming more socially

conscious in their religious thinking These social

creatures (esp mankind) have become all the way

concerned about the surrounding ecosystem not to

mention they have also started feeling concerned

about their lsquoenvironmentrsquo as well

Traditional ways of festival celebrations

are changing with materialization of new

millennium In recent times a new concept has

surfaced called lsquoEco-friendly Cult Fest

Celebrationrsquo Technology driven institutes like

ours has not been far behind in adopting this

changing mantra In the month of September 2004

few spearhead inmates came forward and thought

of doing something unusual The idea was to

celebrate the age-old traditional cultural hostel fest

ldquoGanesh Utsavrdquo in some different fashion I still

remember that rainy day when Subir Anil Kumar

and I went to the IDC department where a group of

ladies from ldquoSHAKTIrdquo (an NGO) were conducting

a workshop on how to prepare the Ganesh idol

using environment friendly materials Hardly it

took us an hour or so to master the overall artistry

and technology of Lordrsquos idol preparation We

were all set to prepare the first so ever kind of

Ganesh idol using fine wet clay brought from the

deep bank of Powai Lake We went couple of days

to educate the other people in idol preparation

This started a barely three year old new era of

celebration of ldquoEco-friendly Ganesh Utsavrdquo

Queen of the Campus was among the very first

hostels to embark on such an activity In fact we

inmates liked the concept of having ldquoEco-friendly

Ganesh Idolrdquo including the eco-friendly pandal

Last year it was the HATRICK year we proudly

celebrated the Eco-friendly Ganesh fest for the

third year running

The concept of ldquoEco-friendly Cult

Celebrationrdquo was well appreciated because of the

obvious reasons it reduces the environmental and

water pollution saves the aquatic lifehellip so much

and so forth It was also serving our purpose of

saving our penny From the last three years of my

stay I am very well aware of the H-1rsquos great

cultural spirit and their uniqueness in celebrating

any event in their own fashion I have seen

Queenites coming together and spending sleepless

nights in the preparation of pandal and other

decoration stuff not to mention the many more

critics adding the flavor of their thoughts and ideas

as well

Festivals like Ganesh Utsav Hostel Day

Celebration Holi Onam Dipawali Eid Christmas

and many other events bring a tremendous

enthusiasm and energy among the inmates This

also creates a friendly bonding a unity in team

spirit and great opportunity in network building as

well as socio-cultural interaction and harmony

among the culturally diverse H1 inmates

Many of us have seen the changing face of

Queen of the Campus I am sure there are more

bright and prosperous days ahead and a great

cultural bonding among the queenites I wish all

the best and bright future to the all inmates and

especially the outgoing junta Jai Hind

Spirituality A Scientific Introspection

Spirituality is not a causatom of brains of

less intelligent people nor does it deal with

anything myth as many take it to be It is a science

in itself This is the greatest of knowledge India

possess and has to be proud of It is the knowledge

that gives peace and prosperity It is the knowledge

that brings harmony in the society It is the

knowledge that teaches us to love love and only

love

A serious inquirer will ask ldquoHow is

spirituality a sciencerdquo Let us understand from

fundamental viewpoint The dictionary meaning of

science is ldquoknowledge systematized and

formulated to general truths and principlesrdquo In the

greatest Truth of all times Bhagavad-gita the Lord

says -

bhumir apo nalo vayuh

kham mano buddhir eva ca

ahankara itiyam me

bhinna prakrtir astadha

Earth water fire air ether mind intelligence and

false ego--all together these eight comprise My

separated material energies (BG 704)

Our research pertains mainly to one or

combination of few of the above principles The

Lord continues to say -

If people become better Hindus better Muslims and

better Buddhists by our acts of love then there is

The existence of spirit soul can be easily

understood by the following logic (for one who

does not believe in teachings of Gita) After the

body is dead the lungs heart hands legs senses

tissues blood etc are all present as would when

heshe lived But then why are they dis-functional

Why did the heart stop pumping What is the

difference between the dead and living If it is the

matter that one refers to then they are all present in

both living and dead The misssing principle is

referred to as spirit soul life force energy driving

force etc by different people

The science dealing with matter (inferior

energy of the Lord) is material science and that

dealing with spirit (superior energy of the Lord) is

spiritual science Most (almost all) of the scientist

deal with matter which in itself is dead and needs

to be animated by a conscious spirit (living

person) Man (spirit soul) can create computers or

robots and make them walk and talk He can

manipulate with inanimate matter He can create

new material from existing matter but of course

not another living person So ldquoMatter cannot create

soulrdquo where as vice-versa is possible

The seers of this truth are spiritual

scientists They work on the platform of the

superior energy (spirit driver of the body) and not

on the matter (body which is being driven) That

does not however deny the scientific progress

India has made in past few decades It is needed

for the economic development of the country But

they have to work coherently with spiritual

scientists If material scientists are blind (to living

force) spiritual scientists are lame (having no

support from leaders and scientific community) A

peaceful and prosperous nation can be built when

these two scientists compliment each other

question was how many would be entrepreneurrsquos

out of H1 I got most negative answers After much

digging I found that there is lack of motivation and

Entrepreneurship is not one shall inherit

from family but every one can mould

herselfhimself for entrepreneurship To be an

entrepreneur one has to change in belief Changing

a belief is biggest hurdle for first time

entrepreneur After PhD itrsquos easier as a corporate

cocoon with fat salaries rather than a strange

stressful and frightening prospect of

entrepreneurship

Being a successful entrepreneur needs few

elements like belief knowledge action and

proactive decision-making Belief in yourself and

your potential is prime element Belief is different

than over-confidence Belief is basically the

confidence in your ability and resources One shall

have confidence that ldquoI can do it I have ability to

do itrdquo The business knowledge is next element

which mainly includes accounting legal financial

management marketing recruitment etc This

knowledge can be developed with reading new

papers books listening successful entrepreneur

The best way to learn all this is to work with start-

ups for at least one-two years One can also hire

services at lower cost If you are incubated in IITB

incubation then these facilities are available The

third element is action Donrsquot wait for tomorrow

do work today itself One also has to be reactive

and make adjustments according to the market

Synthesize information analysis situation weigh

all possible alternatives and ultimately reacting is

important The final element is perseverance

During start it is quite likely that no one will

entertain you there may not be sale only loss and

loss But one must preserve and work through this

period Keeping faith and trying is necessary You

will always think giving up but donrsquot do it

Every one who is seriously involved in the pursuit of

science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest

in the laws of the Universe -- a spirit vastly superior

to that of man and one in the face of which we with

Itrsquos always better to spend two-three years

of life as an entrepreneur before trying for a job

Whether you are successful or failure as an

entrepreneur you will always develop some good

qualities out of it which will be helpful for rest of

life Few qualities that one can develop are like

better communications patience control over

During entrepreneurship one will come out of fear

which will help in overcome all problems of life

No doubt modern education persuades

people to proceed on the materialistic path but

not in ethical way According to Indian tradition

education is to be called- sa vidya ya vimuktaye

ie the inner development of oneself Character

building is the most important role for the

development of inner capacities and capabilities

Education should not be degree oriented but it

should help in the growth of an individual

According to Gandhi education is ldquothat which

draws out and stimulates the spiritual intellectual

and physical faculties of childrenrdquo The tragedy is

that our present education does not provide the

ethical virtues to make a difference between

lsquoRightrsquo and lsquoWrongrsquo rather places emphasis on

how to accumulate more and more wealth for

onersquos own benefit Education should be useful

purposeful meaningful and successful in life and

promote the spirit of human progress peace and

prosperity

Man is basically related with inner

goodness According to science factual problems

are the real problems of human being for what

science deals with into facts But according to the

philosophical perspective the notion of

meaningful life or happy life is the only life

which is worth living Of course philosophical

understanding of human problems does not deny

the scientific views of factual problems

According to philosophical perspective factual

problems are not real problem but unavoidable

The notion of life is different and independent

from the psycho-psychical life Here it would be

wrong to think that for getting the meaningful life

we have to run away from the empirical world

We cannot escape the empirical world which is

the place for self-realization We have to

compromise with the world and accept whatever

it throws to us be it sorrow or pleasure The

outside world is the reflection of our attitudes If

we look at the negative side of the things then

our outlook would be miserable And if we look

at the world optimistically then we can feel the

positive energy that surrounds us everywhere All

the things around us are merely manifestations of

our inner self Thatrsquos why we cannot separate the

transcendental from the empirical world but they

are inter-dependent A psycho-physical life is

attached with causal connection in a contingent

world A Meaningful life is one which has some

purpose but cannot be embodied with casual

condition The meaningfulness of life means to

get into the essence of life or sense of life which

is considered as happy life The happy life or

sense of life lies outside the material It does not

mean that the sense of life is totally separate from

empirical world but it exists in an obscure way

The real meaning of Human existence is

the self-transformation self-activity and self-

respect For him every individual is authorized

to work towards his own decision and will It

encourages every man to live up to his rational

will The concept of Humanism is the disciplined

way of respecting oneself and also others It

suggests how to draw equality and harmony in

socio-economic political and educational

structures of society which promotes global

harmony The idea of self-honour would

automatically prosper in oneself only when one is

continually awake in performing onersquos duties and

responsibilities to the best of onersquos abilities It is

obviously said that every one is to be awakened

for the worship of humanity According to

Gandhi ldquoService to mankind is service to Godrdquo

The people having an attitude of selflessness can

see the whole world as a family and will be able

to eradicate the crisis and promote spiritual
