México gracias a un triunfo 2-1 logró por primera vez en 34 años, vencer en un partido de por las eliminato-rias para la Copa Mundial a Estados Unidos el viernes en el Estadio MAPFRE.El resultado terminó una serie de cuatro triunfos consecutivos por un marcador 2-0 de los estadounidenses sobre su vecino fronterizo en el mismo escenario en el marco de las eliminatorias de la CONCACAF. La última victoria de México en Estados Unidos en un partido previo a un mundial, se produjo el 10 de sep-tiembre 1972, en Los Ángeles, también por 2-1.

Rafael Márquez, de 37 años, rompió un empate 1-1 en el minuto 89, cuando su cabezazo, después de un tiro de esquina de Miguel Layun desde la esquina de la izquierda, se metió por el segundo palo.

El influyente Layun había adelantado a los visitantes 1-0 en el minuto 20. Una batalla por la posesión del balón entre el mediocampista estadounidense Michael Bradley y Giovani dos Santos terminó con el esférico en piernas de Layun que después de recogerla, sacó un remate de derecha desde 23 metros que rozó leve-mente la mano izquierda en la estirada de Tim Howard y entrar furtivamente dentro del poste derecho.

Howard se vio obligado a abandonar el terreno de juego en el minuto 40 con una aparente lesión en la ingle, dando paso a Brad Guzan.

En el minuto 4, Jozy Altidore lanzó un pase hacia el centro para Booby Wood, cuyo primer toque le permitió dividir a dos defensas en el área. Altidore logró mantener el control, el delantero del Hamburgo logró sacar un disparo de zurda desde seis metros que encontró la parte posterior de la portería antes de desviarse levemente en Layun y luego en la mano dere-cha del portero Alfredo Talavera.

Wade Megan registered his second short-handed goal and Brad Hunt picked up his fourth goal of the season, but the Chicago Wolves suffered a 4-2 loss to reigning Calder Cup champion Cleveland Mon-sters Saturday night at Quicken Loans Arena.

The Wolves (5-6-1-1) were strong early and built a two-goal lead after 20 minutes, but Cleveland (5-7-0-1) scored two goals in the second period and two more in the third to earn a come-from-behind win over the Wolves for the second night in a row.

Wolves goaltender Jordan Binnington (3-3-1) stopped 27 of 30 shots and Cleveland Anton Forsberg (5-3-1) turned aside 16 shots to pick up the win.

After a relatively uneventful opening 10 minutes, Wolves right wing Ty Rattie dug the puck out of the left offensive corner and tossed it to Ivan Barbashev. The Wolves center then dished a cross-slot pass to Hunt floating into the top of the right circle for a one-time shot at 13:50.

In the final minutes of play in the opening stanza, captain Chris Butler was given a slashing penalty. On the penalty kill, center Wade Megan intercepted a Cleveland point pass and dashed between two Mon-sters skaters for a breakaway chance that he cashed in low on Forsberg’s glove side.

The second frame was all Cleveland as the Monsters scored twice. Nick Moutrey tallied the second short-handed goal of the game to get the Monsters on the board at 6:07. Then, at 15:33 from below the goal line, Sonny Milano banked a shot off Binnington’s back to tie the game at two.

The Monsters scored their third goal, the go-ahead marker, at 8:22 of the final session when Markus Hannikainen netted his fifth goal of the season. With less than two seconds on the clock, John Scott nabbed an empty-net tally for the 4-2 final.

The Chicago Mustangs executed the game-winning sequence with aplomb in the 7-6 overtime win over Cedar Rapids. Miguel Vaca laid a weighted pass off for Efrain “Wilo” Martinez on the left wing, and he buried his shot to the far post for the sudden-death goal, his third of the game, with 4:29 left in OT. “We executed the final play to perfection for the walk-off win,” coach Armando Gamboa said. “We were fortunate to have those two players link up in a dangerous part of the field. That combi-nation of players will be crucial for us all season.” The Mustangs improved to 4-1 in home openers and have won back-to-back home openers. Goalkeeper Jesus Flores made several sprawling saves including one in overtime to keep the game alive, he finished with 19 saves. The Mustangs (1-0) nearly won the game at the end of regulation when forward Taylor Bond knocked down Flores’ long ball to midfielder Alexis Camarena, whose half-volley rocked the cross-bar. Wilo’s second goal put the Mustangs up 4-2 with 13:11 left in the third quarter, for the team’s largest lead of the game. The Rampage (1-1) answered with four-straight goals to take a 6-4 lead with 11:42 left. The Mustangs pulled one back when Bond stripped Cedar Rapids keeper Brett Petricek at midfield, and turned to bury a long-range shot, for his second goal of the game. After they killed a penalty, defender Ephraim Beard’s blast from the left wing forced a rebound that Osvaldo Rojas buried in front of the net to knot the game. After a weekend series with the Chicago Mustangs, it is clear the Cedar Rapids Rampage have some things to clean up. Four Chicago goals erased a fourth-quarter Cedar Rapids lead as the Rampage fell to the Mustangs for the second time in two days, 9-8, in a Major Arena Soccer League game in front of 2,280 fans Sunday at the U.S. Cellular Center. “It was a frustrating game because as good as we were offensively … we gave up three or four goals by mistake,” Rampage forward/head coach Hewerton Moreira said. “Some of the goals were, individually, mistakes that happened last night as well.” Saturday night at Chicago, the Rampage watched a 6-4 lead in the final frame evaporate into a 7-6 overtime defeat. The Sunday game was tied at halftime, 3-3, thanks to two Chicago goals that deflected off Rampage players and an errant Cedar Rapids pass that was headed back into the goal. A pair of third-quarter Moreira goals off restarts sent Cedar Rapids to the final frame with a 6-5 lead. From there, Chicago scored four unanswered goals. Six different Rampage players scored a goal, led by two from Moreira and forward Gordy Gurson. De-fenders Jonatan Santos and Pablo Da Silva each collected a goal and a game-high three assists. ‘We don’t rely on one player, we have so many that can score,” Moreira said. “But we’ve been missing a lot of chances. If we score half of what we have been creating, we would have put this game away in the third quarter.” Taylor Bond led Chicago (2-0) with three goals and two assists. Bears blasted by Bucs in Tampa7

Every time the Bears take a step forward, it seems like they take two steps back.That was the case again Sunday in Tampa, where the Bears not only failed to build off an impressive win over the Vi-kings but followed their best game of the season with one of their worst.

Facing a much less formidable opponent than Minnesota, the Bears committed five turnovers—four in the first half—and suffered another serious injury in an embarrassing 36-10 loss to the Buccaneers.Jay Cutler was responsible for four of the turnovers, throwing two interceptions and losing two fumbles. One of his picks was returned by former Bears safety Chris Conte 20 yards for a touchdown and one of Cutler’s lost fumbles rolled out of the end zone for a safety.With the loss, the Bears fell to 2-7 overall and 0-5 on the road. The Buccaneers (4-5) entered the game having lost six straight and 18 of their last 21 home games dating back to 2013.

Adding injury to insult, the Bears lost Pro Bowl guard Kyle Long to an ankle injury in the second quarter. Long, who missed the previous game with a triceps injury, was carted off the field.The Buccaneers defense entered Week 10 with just four interceptions this season before picking off two Cutler passes on back-to-back plays in the first quarter.

The first came when cornerback Brent Grimes jumped a slant pattern intended for Alshon Jeffery at the Tampa Bay 28. The second was costlier as Conte intercepted a pass Cutler floated to tight end Logan Paulsen and returned it for a score.

The Bears responded as Jordan Howard gained 13 yards on back-to-back runs to set up Connor Barth’s season-long 54-yard field goal, closing the gap to 7-3 with 2:42 left in the first quarter.

Safety Harold Jones-Quartey then intercepted a Jameis Winston pass that deflected off receiver Cecil Shorts III at the Tampa Bay 24, giving the Bears a golden opportunity to take the lead.But on third-and-goal from the 4, Cutler fumbled when he was sacked from behind by Noah Spence and Kwon Alexan-der recovered the loose ball and returned it four yards to the Bucs’ 14.

One play earlier, Long suffered an ankle injury that caused him to be removed from the field on a cart. Players from both teams came over to the Pro Bowl guard to console him.

The Bears then committed their fourth turnover on five possessions when Howard was stripped by defensive lineman William Gholston after a 10-yard run and safety Bradley McDougald returned the fumble six yards to the Chicago 29.

The Buccaneers converted the turnover into Winston’s 10-yard touchdown pass to tight end Cameron Brate, who beat Adrian Amos to increase the margin to 14-3 with 3:33 left in the half.

After Roberto Aguayo’s 30-yard field goal made it 17-3 with :31 remaining before intermission, the Bears stunned the crowd as Cameron Meredith hauled in a deflected Hail Mary pass from Cutler for a 50-yard touchdown as time expired in the first half.Meredith’s TD drew the Bears to within 17-10 and gave them some much-needed momentum after a disas-trous first half. But the Buccaneers wasted little time re-establishing a commanding lead.

Two plays on the opening possession of the second half summarized the Bears season. First, three pass rushers chased Winston back to his own goal line but couldn’t get him down. He heaved a pass downfield to Mike Evans, who leaped over Tracy Porter for a 39-yard reception.On the next play, receiver Freddie Martino caught a 43-yard touchdown pass from Winston, beating cor-nerback Cre’Von LeBlanc to make it 24-10.The Buccaneers widened the margin to 29-10 on Aguayo’s 27-yard field goal and a safety that resulted when Robert Ayers sacked Cutler, causing a fumble that rolled out of the end zone.

Doug Martin’s 1-yard TD run made it 36-10 with 5:55 left in the game.

Dwyane Wade is most familiar with that rare air colloquially known as the next level, that heady place in the NBA re-served for the truly elite, the stars among stars. Wade’s had his time there, like when he led the league in scoring while being in the top three in voting for MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, that elusive place reserved for those who are joining the best in the game, this season like DeMar DeRozan and Damian Lillard in averaging more than 30 per game.

And now Jimmy Butler, nudging his way into the group with another extraordinary game Saturday in the Bulls 106-95 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Butler had 37 points, nine assists, eight rebounds, three steals and made 14 of 14 free throws. He led the Bulls back from a 12-point first quarter deficit with a big defensive third quarter that disrupted the Wizards and led to eight fast break points in a 28-14 third. The Bulls then cruised home with a double digit lead most of the way. In his last four games, with all double digit free throw totals as only the third Bull ever to do so, Butler is averaging 29 points, seven assists, 5.3 rebounds and four steals.

The Bulls have thus won three of four to get to 6-4 as they now head out for a two-week, six-game road trip mostly in the Western Conference. Butler on the season is up to a career high 24.3 points per game.

“He’s leading us,” said Wade. “He’s doing what me and (Rajon) Rondo came here for him to do, which is turn into a really premier, premier player in this league above just an All Star. He’s really done it out there. This last week he’s been doing every-thing. He’s defending the other team’s best guy, he’s rebounding, passing, scoring, being aggres-sive. That’s what you do when you are 27 years old.

“I think for Jimmy he’s going to have (the ball),” said Wade. “We’re going to give it to him down the stretch; he’s going to be the guy. We’re going to put the ball in his hand and he wants to deliver. He’s not going do it every night, but when he doesn’t it’s going to eat at him because he’s that kind of competitive guy. Like we’ve all said when we have a guy who is obviously an All-Star in this league but is right in the prime of his career, my job and Rondo’s job and everyone’s job is to get the best out of him and right now we are seeing how great he can be and he can do that nightly. Just like you look at DeRozan with Toronto, he’s taken that next step. Jimmy is at that point.”

And if Butler truly is with the support of veterans like Rondo and scoring off the bench like 17 points for Niko-la Mirotic Saturday, the Bulls could have found that elusive go to guy who is vital for a seriously competitive team. Butler has flirted with the possibility, making the All-Star team the last two seasons. But it’s the leap from there that truly separates a player, when you can lift your team when all around you are stumbling. Butler has done that for the last week, like his eight big points down the stretch in Miami Thursday to save that game, his 39 in trying to match the Hawks despite defeat Wednesday.

“I was decent,” shrugged Butler, who didn’t much want to praise himself. “We won; did what we were supposed to do down the stretch. We didn’t start out the right way, did all right in the end and won the game. I don’t consider that (I was) carrying (the team). I consider that making some shots and getting fouled. I was just doing what my teammates want and needed me to do and to be aggressive. D. Wade always tells me to come out with energy and be aggressive. Just want to play basketball.”

Panamá inició la ronda final de las eliminatorias de la CONCACAF para la Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2018 con una victoria por 1-0 sobre Honduras el viernes en el Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano.

El resultado elevó provisionalmente a los Canaleros a la cima de la tabla a falta de la realización los encuentros entre Costa Rica-Trinidad y Tobago y Estados Unidos-México más tarde en la noche. Fidel Escobar anotó el único gol en el minuto 22, cuando su remate de tiro libre de pierna derecho desde 2o metros hacia tomó una ligera desviación de Romell Quioto antes de golpear la parte posterior de las redes.

Aunque otras oportunidades fueron difíciles de conseguir en la primera mitad, ambos equipos fueron más pelig-rosos después del descanso y no tuvieron suerte de no generar goles adicionales.

En el minuto 57, el portero panameño Jaime Penedo produjo dos salvadas. Se vió obliado a lanzarse después de un remate de Diego Reyes desde el lado derecho del área y, segundos más tarde, el arquero 35 años, frustró el disparo Alberth Elis.

Blas Pérez tuvo la oportunidad deaumentar la ventaja de Panamá en el minuto 57, pero de algún modo se perdió por el balón se abrió por el lado izquierdo del poste, a pesar de estar completamente desmar-cado en el área.

El portero de Honduras Donis Escober mantuvo las esperanzas de su equipo a los 65 minutos. El jugador del Olimpia bloqueó por primera vez el intento inicial de Alberto Quintero y luego se zambulló en el poste izquierdo para evitar que el balón cruzara la línea cuando el centrocampista intentó anotar su propio rebote.

Elis tuvo la oportunidad de igualar en el minuto 89, pero incapaz de conectar desde el lado derecho del área.

Panamá regresa a la acción el martes cuando reciba a México en el Estadio Rommel Fernández, mientras que Honduras permanecerá en San Pedro Sula donde se medirá a Trinidad y Tobago.
