S top press. Hold the front page. Yes really. Turns out that April 7th is ‘national no housework day’. Phewee. Glad I found out now, as I would

hate to think of my needlessly spring cleaning every surface of my home, as I do every day. Hope to have saved you some elbow grease too. Don’t mention it.

I would like to congratulate Pet Chums on reaching their 15 year anniversary. They have been caring for pets since 2000, from pet sitting, through to dog walking and generally making sure that your pets are fed and watered when you are away from the home. Pet Chum’s owner Sue along with her team of walkers deserve a medal for going out during all weathers. I am the kind of person who puts a coat on to take the bins out, so you have my total admiration. Here’s to the next fifteen years. We have a fantastic competition to offer readers. Wild Forest Gym, hosted at Nuclear Races in Brentwood, opened last month and is the first UK outdoor Natural Movement Fitness Gym and dedicated Obstacle Race Training Cen-tre. A month’s VIP membership is up for grabs, plus the chance to redeem a free trial from their website (50 places on offer). Take a look on pages 6-7 to see what you could be experiencing. Quite a contrast to the sweat box of an indoor gym and a breath of fresh air in more ways than one.

I hope you enjoy reading this edition and we will back in June (which sounds an awful lot like summer). Jane

T he topic on which I am about to spew forth is a road well travelled. In fact, it is so congested

with moaners, that they have had to implement a slow lane for those who whinge so incessantly, it make them lose control of their legs and they are forced to grind to a slow shuffle, with foam disgorging from their mouths as they attempt to gnaw their own knuckles off in frustration.

The source of such irritation? Packaging. Of course it is. But to be fair, the annoyance caused by rubbish packaging had, until last week, barely registered. Sure, I tutted loudly as I wrestled a blister pack containing a stereo lead to the floor, and may have even grunted as we tussled back and forth, but it was a fleeting angst that dissipated as soon as I had hacked my way in with a pair of large scissors. Yes, I remember being a tad het up as I tried to free a teddy bear from its cardboard cage at Christmas, twisting the kryptonite wire ties first one and then the other, but really, I put my anguish mainly down to the fact that I had a two year old sitting on my head screaming loudly that he wanted to hold his new teddy NOW.

After all, the domestic landscape is peppered with things that scarcely work. Just look at toasters, those malevolent machines of evil cinderdom, patiently waiting for you to be confident that setting 2 gives you the perfect golden brown toast on which you can spread your condiment of choice, before deciding that this morning, setting 2 will create a toast furnace so fierce that a casual peer into the slots of doom will eradicate your eyebrows and leave you with a small pile of carbon to eat for breakfast.

But back to the irritation in hand. As I say, last week, I was in the blissful state of mild irritation. Now, I am furious. I ordered an electronic item from Amazon. It was obvious from the start that the packaging designer had read Apple Packaging for Dummies. I turned the box over in my hand to gently pull the quick release tab from its resting place, and noticed a sticker. It read: Frustration Free Packaging'.

How nice, I thought, as the tab glided across the box and I flicked the end flap open. They're right. Look at me. I'm as happy as Larry as I lift the lid to reveal a snugly packaged gadget.

But hang on a cardboard pickin' minute. That sticker is an insult. It is an outrage. That sticker is fundamentally the packaging designer saying to me: 'Look, I can finally do my job properly. All those years that you cut your fingers on shards of plastic as you attempted to extricate your purchase? All those times you needed a chain saw to gain entry into a box? That was me, practising at my job. I was rubbish at it, I admit. I didn't know my perforation from my vacuum formed tray. But now, after fifteen years of doing this, I can do it. I am competent at my job. I can design a package that doesn't make you want to weep, involve a trip to A&E to replace a fingertip or involve industrial flame throwers. Well done me."

Call me old fashioned (I don't have a Hoxton Hipster beard, so you'd be technically correct) but I don't think the fact that it has taken until the twenty-first century to achieve this is anything to crow about. If it had taken me that long to get good at my job, I wouldn't be shouting about it on a sticker. I mean, the world has gone stark-raving, easy-peel mad.

Before you know it, my next toaster will be sporting a sticker saying 'This toaster will not burn your bread to a cinder'. Actually, no. That's just a ridiculous no-tion. National Jazz Archive Loughton Library

Did you know that the National Jazz Archive, a registered charity, is located locally in Loughton Library, and is open 4 mornings a week? What is more, the extensive resources of the National Jazz Archive have been opened up by a project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The 3-year project, ‘The Story of British Jazz’ has improved public access to the archives of rich and diverse holdings, including 40,000 archived items, 4,300 books, 600 journals and dozens of photo collections.

The project has also extended to organising talks, open days, concerts and exhibitions. Partnerships and collaborations were arranged throughout the project, with nearly 30 organisations taking part around the country. Locally, this includes the Loughton Festival, Loughton Youth Project, Love Loughton and home to the archive, Loughton Library. Lesley Walker, Project Monitor for the Heritage Lottery Fund, said, “I have watched the National Jazz Archive develop into an active and lively organisation with properly catalogued and managed collections, reaching out to a much wider audience including their local communities. There is now a greater awareness within and beyond the jazz community of the Archive and its activities and ‘The Story of British Jazz’ makes the collection accessible to people everywhere.” The National Jazz Archive at Loughton Library is open on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday between 10am and 1pm.

A bottle of whisky signed by Prime Minister David Cameron and The Dream Factory patron and

Work and Pensions Secretary, Iain Duncan Smith, boosted the total raised at a Cockney Knees-Up for The Dream Factory charity.

The whisky was auctioned for £250 with the money going towards the £6,400 raised. Some 160 people attended the event in February, held at the Marriott Hotel, Waltham Abbey, by The Pearly Kings & Queens Society.

Pie and mash and ‘Rosie Lee’ were served while entertainment was provided by the Pearly Kings and Queens and The Fabulous Blues Brothers (presented by Souled Out).

There was also a raffle with a host of donated prizes. All the profits go to The Dream Factory which makes dreams come true for children and young adults with life-limiting conditions.

The charity has fulfilled more than 300 dreams and is currently working on some 70 more requests.

Charity founder Avril Mills said, “We had to turn people away because we sold so many tickets. It was the best atmosphere ever and many people have asked if it could become an annual event.

“Everyone was up dancing with the Pearlies; they really had a fabulous time and when the Blues Brothers came on everyone carried on dancing.”

Avril added, “It was a night to remember for every-one. Thank you to everyone who came including Vicki Michelle, Colin McMillan, Lisa Nash, my volunteers and the three ‘dream’ young people who had received dreams.”

“I also want to thank the hotel and their staff for helping us so much with the event. We are really grateful for everyone’s contributions to a fantastic night.” Now that’s some good news to put a roof on your boat race. www.yourdreamfactory.org

S tudents from Stage One Theatre School will be performing The Secret Code in May, a new

musical from Jonathan Rice and Michael Gatton of Song and Dance Kidz.

The Secret Code is set in England during the Second World War. It follows a group of London evacuees to the English countryside, as they try to crack a secret German code and save the country from invasion.

The cast will arrive at the Zinc Arts venue in Ongar by the vintage bus from Epping and then steam train from North Weald to Ongar. This will give the cast members a taste of how evacuee children travelled during the Second World War.

The production evokes some much-cherished nostalgia for the England of a by-gone era. Still, it isn't quite all fun and frolicking, as the musical acknowledges the concerns of war, while creating an upbeat musical about solidarity and working together. The writers haven't forgotten those important historic characters (the good and the bad) to make sure even the youngest performers are aware of their history.

The Secret Code is a fresh, funny and entertaining musical providing a good old blast from the past. Stage One presents The Secret Code on 8th and 9th May at Zinc Arts, Ongar. If you would like to come and watch, please call Stage One on 01992 651222.

I would like to tell you about a brilliant workshop that will take place in Theydon Bois on 30th and 31st May,

led by Mathias Schiesser and Urs Tobler, who we fly in from Switzerland especially to facilitate.

TaKeTiNa is a specific style of rhythm work founded by Austrian, Reinhard Flatischler. It is a rhythm workshop based on getting back to the roots of your rhythm. It works on a layered system: the first is spoken sylla-bles, then a simple step to go with these syllables, then claps, and finally sung responses.

These challenges are presented by Mathias or Urs as ‘offers’ that may or may not be taken up, therefore enabling the participant to work at his or her own pace. You can always do less, or even lay down in the circle to take a rest, as the nurturing rhythm surrounding you continues.

We are all born with an innate knowledge of rhythm. TaKeTiNa helps you to reconnect with those roots of rhythm within you. You can experience rhythm the way we most naturally grasp and learn it: by direct physical experience of fundamental rhythmic movement.

The really great thing about it is the warm atmosphere of the workshop in which you can do nothing wrong, rhythmically that is. Participants are never made to feel bad about getting it wrong. ‘Falling out’ of the rhythm is encouraged. And you don’t get criticised.

TaKeTiNa works for beginners, as well as accomplished musicians, because participants can learn at their own pace. It is about letting go of the mind’s control and finding confidence, relaxation and flow as you let your-self be carried by the rhythm.

The training to facilitate TaKeTiNa workshops is exten-sive and takes years. Mathias and Urs are experienced facilitators. As a teacher who has participated in TaKeTiNa for many years, I cannot recommend the workshop highly enough. It is really good fun as well! Come along and give it a try.

Be sure at the door

A campaign which aims to pre-vent elderly people becoming victims of rogue traders has been launched by Essex Police, Essex County Council and Age UK Essex.

Be Sure at the Door aims to help potential victims – often elderly people – to avoid falling prey to rogue traders.

Community Agents and Age UK Essex staff will be visiting elderly people across Epping and the rest of the county giving them advice about how to react to cold callers and how to spot a genuine trader.

Fridge magnets have been produced with three vital steps to follow if a cold caller touts for trade, as well as contact details for the Trading Standards’ Buy With Confidence scheme. They are being distributed by Community Agents, Age UK

Essex, Essex Police and some district councils. They are also available from GP surgeries and Essex libraries.

The introduction of Be Sure at the Door forms part of a wider campaign by Essex police to help prevent elderly residents falling victim to bogus callers, following a number of cases that saw people tricked into revealing their bank details. Dc Alan Philips said: “Rogue traders often target vulnerable members of the community offering household property services. Using any method to obtain as much money as possi-ble, they will often only do the job to a poor standard or not undertake the work at all.”

If you think you've been target-ed by a rogue trader, please let us know by calling 101, contact Trading Standards on 08454 040 506 or talk to a friend or rela-tive. If you feel threatened by a sales person in your own home call 999.

T OWIE’S Billie Faiers and Ferne McCann didn’t let a bit of mud hold them back as they were put

through theirpaces, getting in shape for Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life Pretty Muddy event.

Taking on the Pretty Muddy assault course, 25-year-old mum-of-one Billie and 24-year-old entrepreneur Ferne, showed they are not afraid of a bit of dirt as they took on the challenge despite chilly temperatures.

Race for Life Pretty Muddy takes place in Gloucester Park, in Basildon, on Saturday 27 June and the twosome are encouraging women from across Essex, regardless of their age, shape or fitness level, to gather their friends and family and join the female-only event, to help bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

Ferne McCann said, “Everyone who takes part in Race for Life is making a huge difference in helping to beat cancer sooner. Anyone can take part so why not get your friends and family involved this summer?” Billie Faiers added:, “We’re so proud to be supporting Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life and back such a fantastic cause. Come on ladies, get involved and sign yourself up at raceforlife.org”.

Cancer Research UK is urging all women to stand together and join the pink army by signing up to take part in the Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco. All funds raised will go towards beating all 200 different types of cancer. As well as Pretty Muddy, women can take part in 5K and 10K events too. With over 300 events taking place this summer, there’s something for everyone.

Gill Burgess, Race for Life event manager, said “All of our Race for Life events are not competitive. They are not about being fit or fast. The reality on the day is that participants of all shapes, sizes and ages generate an electric energy as they unite in their determination to defeat cancer. Pledging to take part in Race for Life, or Pretty Muddy, alongside thousands of likeminded women, is incredibly motivating. The atmosphere at the events is full of emotion. Many will be remembering loved ones lost to cancer or celebrating the lives of people dear to them who have survived.” Enter at raceforlife.org or call the hotline on 0845 600 6050 and follow Race for Life on twitter twitter.com/raceforlife or join the Race for Life Facebook communi-ty facebook.com/raceforlife

Ask Brenda

Relationship advice from Brenda Clowes MBACP COSRT

I don’t think my partner wants children

I am 35 and I have been with my partner for 8 years. I would like to have children, but he is very negative about it. He has never said outright that he doesn't want children, but

has never been enthusiastic when I bring up the subject. I am worried that if I leave it any longer my chances of conceiving will diminish and it may be a problem.

I love him and do not want to leave, but I feel torn because having a family has always been something that I assumed would happen. Anon

Brenda replies

Do you know why your partner is reluctant to have children? Anxiety about becoming a parent is very common but it is often coupled with a sense of excite-ment and pleasurable anticipation which overcomes the nerves and pushes us forward.

As we know, becoming parents requires major changes to almost everything in our lives. How will we manage financially? Have we enough room? What will we do about maternity leave? What about childcare? How will we deal with sleepless nights? What will happen to our social life? What will I feel like with my body getting big, will I feel taken over? Will the grandparents be available? Will that be helpful or could there be too much intrusion?

Often one partner will see all the pitfalls while the other has a dream baby in mind.

Some people see the end to the exclusive couple as a huge loss. They fear the attention that will be needed by a new little person will mean an end to the focus on each other and that they will become invisible, maybe repeating their painful childhood experience. Perhaps thinking about becoming a mother or father feels as though they are being asked to give more than they feel they have got to give, but cannot put into words or even understand that this might be a cause of their reluctance.

Having children is often discussed early on in the relationship. Many couples are looking for someone to have a family with and the intention is known by both.

The greatest sadness is when one partner has made it clear categorically that they do not want children and

the other has gone along with it thinking that given time they will be able to change their partner's mind and they haven't been able to. For some this is an impasse and parting is the only answer.

Your partner sounds different. He has never said an outright 'no' but has shown no enthusiasm. There are doubts inside him that he may not be clear about him-self.

If you can have some couple counselling sessions, or if he would have some sessions for himself, I think it would help him to understand what is behind the reluctance. This could lead to confirming his doubts but more likely to helping him to understand where the doubts are coming from and empower him.

Experiences when we are growing up have powerful effects on us, but it helps to make links and understand.

We cannot undo the past but we can undo the effects in the present

Last edition’s problem: Readers’ replies

“Can you tell me what it is reasonable to expect my partner to do when it comes to chores? I thought when we moved into the flat he would share the jobs with me but it hasn't worked out like that. If I ask him to do something he will do that one job and then expect praise for it. I have to do all the organising and most of the housework, as well as a full time responsible job and if I say something he tells me to stop nagging.”

C learly he needs to pull his socks up here. The lazy git! After all you do work too it’s only fair that the

housework is divided between the two of you. You mention your job is not only full time but responsible too. Do you work long hours? If his hours are less wouldn't it be fair that not only should he be helping out at home but even doing more of the lion’s share? Men are simple creatures really. Man handling isn't that much different to dog handling. He clearly responds well to rewards. Think of ways in which to reward him every time he helps out, be it simple praise or even treats that he enjoys. Just make sure these treats aren't supplied when he isn't a good boy. Follow my advice and he will be putty in your hands in no time! Sue, Loughton
