PRINCIPAL’S DESK
I am happy to know that 3rd E –Newsletter of our college
is all set to publish. At SBMP we always try to start and continue
some good practices and E –newsletter is one of them. One year
back, when we decided to start our E _ Newsletter. Our focus is
to highlight all those activities held in and outside polytechnic,
but remained unnoticed in our Annual college magazine “Sagar
Tarang”
The entire E- Newsletter team especially students’
members are very active and creative who put their best efforts to
make this E –Newsletter more pictorial and readable. I am also happy to see that the legacy
Sager Tarang has created in all those years, E –Newsletter is already started to
trod on the same path .
I offer my best wishes to staff and Polytechnic for their continuous efforts in raising
polytechnic’s image to new heights.

Pratyush India is proving itself in every
field possible and technology is no less
here. Union Minister for Science and
Technology Harsh Vardhan dedicated
India’s fastest and first ‘multi-petaflops’
supercomputer to the nation here.
Petaflops is a measure of a computer’s
processing speed.
On Monday, 8th January 2018
India unveiled its fastest
supercomputer 'Pratyush' which is an
array of computers that can deliver a peak
power of 6.8 petaflops. One petaflop is
a million billion floating point
operations per second and is a
reflection of the computing capacity
of a system.
According to reports of Indian
Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM),
Pratyush is the fourth fastest
supercomputer in the world which is
designed for weather and climate research.
It will also upgrade an Indian
supercomputer from the 300s to the 30s in
the Top500 list, a respected international
tracker of the world’s fastest
supercomputers.
The government had sanctioned
last year Rs 400 crore in order to put in
place a 10-petaflop machine. The main
functionality of this supercomputer would
be monsoon forecasting with the help of a
dynamic model.
The IITM release added that the facility
would help the country with better
forecasts in terms of monsoon, extreme
events, tsunamis, cyclones, earthquakes,
air quality, lightning, fishing, hot and cold
waves, flood and drought among others.
This facility will also be used in
coordination with the Indian
Meteorological Department (IMD) and
other weather monitoring institutes, to
evolve better weather monitoring practices
and an improved weather forecasting
system.
This requires simulating the
weather for a given month and letting a
custom-built model calculate how the
actual weather will play out over June,
July, August and September. This new
system would provide wings to the
technology and it would be possible to
9 | P a g e
map regions in India at a resolution of 3
km and the globe at 12 km.
The machines will be installed at two
government institutes: 4.0 petaflops HPC
facility at IITM, Pune; and 2.8 petaflops
facility at the National Centre for Medium
Range Weather Forecast, Noida
These supercomputers will help weather
analysis reach international standards,
and attain improved predictions and
warnings of natural disasters.

Tesla, Inc. (formerly Tesla Motors)
is an American company that
specializes in electric vehicles, energy
storage and solar panel
manufacturing based in Palo Alto,
California.
Founded in 2003, the company
specializes in electric cars, lithium-ion
battery energy storage, and
residential photovoltaic panels (through
the subsidiary company SolarCity). The
additional products Tesla sells include
the Tesla Powerwall and Powerpack batteries, solar panels and solar roof tiles.
Tesla operates multiple
production and assembly plants,
notably Gigafactory 1 near Reno,
Nevada and its main vehicle
manufacturing facility at Tesla
Factory in Fremont, California.
The Gigafactory primarily produces
batteries and battery packs for Tesla
vehicles and energy storage products.
SolarCity
On August 1, 2016, Tesla agreed to
acquire SolarCity Corp. for $2.6 billion in stock.
SolarCity is the largest installer of rooftop solar
systems in the United States. More than 85% of
unaffiliated Tesla and SolarCity shareholders voted to
approve the acquisition, which closed on November 21,
2016.
Strategy
Tesla aims to disrupt the automotive
industry by creating many innovative
pieces that fit together; this strategy
was called "complex coordination" by
Tesla investor Peter Thiel. Its
marketing, production, sales and
technology strategies all are notably
different from its competitors.
11 | P a g e
Tesla's automotive strategy
is to emulate typical
technological-product life cycles and
initially target affluent buyers. It
would then move into larger markets
at lower price points. The battery and
electric drivetrain technology for
each model would be developed and
paid for through sales of the earlier
models. The Roadster was low-
volume and priced at US$109,000.
Model S and Model X targeted the
broader luxury market. Model 3 is
aimed at a higher-volume segment.
It appears that the Tesla Semi prototype
that has been going around the US over
the last few weeks might be touring Tesla’s
top customers who placed orders for the
electric truck.
Last year, PepsiCo placed one of the
biggest orders for Tesla Semi: 100 electric
trucks to add to their fleet.
Like with Anheuser-Busch last week,
Tesla apparently held a private event for
the company to see the electric truck
prototype up close.
