editor’s note

This maybe a bit of a surprise. But let us tell you the story: Several months back, when we started with the idea for our second collection, we began our de-sign thinking process by looking for individuals we can identify as icons. From TV hosts, musi-cians, artists, students, writers, illustrators – We finally narrowed it down. From there, we drew out inspirations to create a whole new collection. We attempted to interpret a wide array of personalities and create a peg board around those.

have finally been, well, finalized; fabricated the furniture then re-done the furniture; made artworks with our in-house designers and collabs - pillows and more. Even our event poster was inspired. Everything was and everything is. We felt that each of the icons represent a certain segment of the existing youth, existing people, those who we want to share our gifts with. From soft, dainty, cupcake like colors that powder the plush seats; bright primaries and edged pieces that spell modern; cool muted basics with handmade-like details; and to the palette of hush-hush tones – we give you a new collection of the soft whimsy, the graphic and the indie pop.

Ladies and gentlemen, we present to you our second collection.These are, entirely, dreams and inspirations made by hand.

LITTLE MISSBONNIE

Arlene is breaking into the art scene fresh from her 3 year stint as art director and writer of Real Living Magazine. In her first solo exhibit aptly called Inflated Dreams, she created illustrations that in itself serve as Heima’s major pieces for their second collection for the year 2010.

Fresh, soft and playful, her pieces are dreamy and imaginative. Arlene’s style and color scheme served as an inspiration for Heima. Hush tones render a muted romanticism perfect for a lazy Sunday morning. Her multitude of talent made the collaboration seamless, just like the loveseat we made cast under her persona. Her style being is a match made in heaven with ours.

On her way to revisiting her two passions, which are drawing and painting, Arlene put up an art blog hoping to draw and write the way that she used to. Realizing that she’d stopped creating art for her own pleasure (much to the dismay of her sketchpads), she plucked the courage to strike it out on her own and finally give her first loves her full attention.

Inspired by beautiful things, from fashion, interiors, and all things vintage, Arlene is driven by a firm belief in hand-drawn art. She keeps her plate full working on commissions, collaborating with like-minded creatives, and developing her own line of paper goods--all in an effort to craft and perfect her vision, and to make her mark with her delicate, feminine, yet modern illustration style.

Her exhibit should serve as an inspiration to others as well. And potentially they would be collector’s pieces too.

Multi talented style enthusiast and fashion design student Danika Rio Navarro styled this collection’s catalog shoot. Not only that, she graced our posters and artwork with an original hand-drawn plate! Her fascination for patterns, textures and details can be found in our poster and even in the utility harems she wore styling our catalog shoot. You can check out her fashion school ventures, style and wardrobe photos, artsy works, travels and musings, inspiring things, happy things, pretty things and maybe a bit of random things.

Wallflowerparty is Kathy P. Gener About a year ago, Kathy Gener randomly spent some hard-earned moolah on a sewing machine. This turned out to be a good investment as this helped her produce the line of hand-sewn tote bags made right from her home. The bags she make are down-to-earth, dependable, and always earnest. Pretty much apt for the real classy ladies who always bring books with them (instead of hoards of makeup) or listen to mix tapes while they’re on the train, and always tell you something surprising during the most unexpected occasions. One thing you must remember about Kathy is her spontaneity. As an added bonus, the wallflowerparty bags always come with buttons or pins, and—surprise, surprise—DIY mix CDs. Like good soundtracks that are damn hard to find, you never pass up on a chance like wallflowerparty. They make diy-one-of-a-kind-reversible-totebags - sometimes with a soundtrack

The creative tandem of Owel and Nice Alvero is a husband and wife team who worked with Heima for an experimental teaser video featuring the sounds of the indie pop band Outerhope. Owel is part of a post pop indie band Ang Bandang Shirley under Terno Recordings and currently studies Music Production. Nice is a freelance graphics designer and writer who has worked with Heima in the past and has now collaborated with us on paper products and other design applications. A former English teacher, she is a mother to Grac Alvero, a future rockstar/artist himself judging from their parents influence.

Ge Mapa is a senior designer in JWT Manila. For Heima’s Collection 2.0, she created the pre-launch event poster and even added awesome music to our playlist. She recently held a solo exhibit called Roomix where she created home accessories and works of art at the same time . She organizes a weekly indie music event at Future Cafe in Cubao Expo called The Strict Rules of Polite Society. She spins as Stolen Kisses together with Chris Quiambao Also a mother of two, Ge is married to Pedicab front man Diego Mapa.

Stolen Kisses is a DJ, a duo composed of Ge Madriaga-Mapa and Christian Quiambao who share their love of indie pop and everything in between; new wave, shoe gaze, twee, etc. Their playlist include Belle and Sebastian, The Lucksmiths, The Drums, Trembling Blue Stars, Soko, LeCoupe, sometimes a little Cibo Matto and Smoking Popes when the mood calls for it. Expect the lady to be shaking her tambourine and the gentleman clapping his hands, while they sing everything they play. These two certainly melt neon lights and disco balls into sunflowers, gumamelas, and picnics. Stolen Kisses started when they partly curated “The Strict Rules Of Polite Society” with Future Cafe’s (Cubao Expo) resident DJ Chie Castaneda. Where they became its mainstay spinners and have attracted regulars who share their love of twee, indie pop, electro lounge, northern soul etc.The Strict Rules of Polite Society is held every Wednesday at I Love You x Future, Cubao Expo. --”some things are worth the chaos”

B Last collection’s collaborators, Everywhere We Shoot, now worked with us on website development. The duo behind Everywhere We Shoot!, Ryan Vergara and Garovs Garrovillo, started out as two kids who would meet up at a fast food near school, just to hang out. After indulging in more hangouts and awkward silences and some photobooth flirtation, they ended up smitten not only with each other, but also with each other’s good taste. Both were trained under College of St. Benilde’s Design & Arts department (Ryan was a Multimedia Arts major, Garovs, Fashion Design and Merchandising). For EWS, the possibilities are endless … and all is done with love.

Kat Encanto, now working with JWT Manila, designed the A3/A4 scratch paper storage for Heima. The piece encourages recycling as well as good design at the workplace. She will be in Milan next month to study design.

Mick Benedicto, who already makes one half of the indie band Outerhope, created artworks and designs for our wall art and pillows. Her band also plays regularly during our event.Armed with only a guitar and an electric keyboard (and occasionally, a xylophone) Mike and Mick Benedicto offer simple yet whimsical melodies on top of quirky lyrics. Much like their original recordings, their live acts play out like a set of inverted lullabies that gently rock you awake as you listen.

She also consigns her tote bags to Heima.

The cool youthful bunch of BJ, Tricia and Raleene worked together for the shoot for our catalog.Everyone became photographer slash model all at the same time! With BJ being the lead photographer, that is. Of course, there’s Tricia, the famous fashion blogger slash photographer who lent us her talent and her signature quiet, sweet demeanor that went perfect with our Arlene set.

Raleene, now rocking a shorter crop, then a wig in the catalog, put edgy and fierceness altogether for our Ingrid set. By the way, Raleene also plays with her sister Rizza in a band called Walkie Talkies. They have played several times for Heima in the past and again on our launch. She’s still studying Interior Design, one reason we love collaborating with her!

Daphne Osena Paez exudes the aura of a

modern day superwoman – a TV show host, model,

and most importantly, a mother – still managing to

dress to the nines. With the launch of her furniture

line, she is now venturing beyond linens and forays

in making a lifestyle brand starting with the special

limited edition of Daphne chairs in dainty colors

gold leafed curlicue backrests here at Heima. Larger

pieces of furniture donned in neutral colored shades

are available at Rustan’s home section in Makati.
