  • Welcome to St. Andrews College

It is a pleasure for me to welcome you to the 28th annual MacPherson Hockey Tournament. For more than a quarter of a century, the staff and students of St. Andrews College have looked forward to this event with great anticipation. For some, hockey truly is Canadas favourite pastime, and this event has always generated tremendous enthusiasm and spirit among our entire Andrean community and beyond.

As the coach of my sons hockey team, a former coach of the First and JV St. Andrews teams, and an avid hockey fan, I am thrilled to watch the boys skills develop over the years. One of our Old Boys, Michael Del Zotto 08, is in his second season with the New York Rangers, something to which so many young Canadians aspire, yet rarely attain. A more realistic dream is for our boys to continue their love for the game by playing in university. We are very proud of our Andreans who have gone on to pursue their academic and athletic dreams at great schools across North America.

Win or lose, the games at this tournament are always fast-paced and exciting. While all teams strive for on-ice success, none should lose sight of the need for sportsmanlike conduct and respect for ones opponent. I think it is quite a testament to our School, coaches, players and staff that the tournament has evolved to its present stature. Like so many other things about St. Andrews, the MacPherson Tournament has become one of our treasured traditions and is a proud symbol of how well our hockey team performs on the North American stage.

On behalf of the School, our students, parents, alumni, and the tournament committee, I extend our best wishes for success to all participating teams.

    Kevin McHenry Headmaster

    History of the MacPherson Tournament

Now in its 28th year, the annual MacPherson Tournament has become a cherished tradition and highly anticipated event in the St. Andrews school year. The tournament, a creation of now-retired first hockey coach and teacher Al Dunford, is one of the most respected and well-organized high school hockey tournaments in North America.

The first tournament in 1984 set the tone for the future. In the opening ceremony game held on the Friday night amid the pomp and tradition of the SAC Pipe and Drum Corps performance, the ceremonial dropping of the first puck, and the wildly cheering fans, St. Andrews defeated the fabled Hounds of Notre Dame 5-4 in overtime.

The tournament has had a truly North American flavour, hosting schools from Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Quebec, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida, New York, Illinois, Nova Scotia and Michigan as well as a variety of regions in Ontario.

At the outset, naming the tournament and the divisions was not difficult. Three Andreans: Lloyd MacPherson, Jim Hamilton and Bob Meagher devoted many years to St. Andrews College and its goals and traditions. While their love of things Andrean was legendary, hockey was their passion.

Mr. MacPherson was Assistant to the Headmaster from 1957-1982 and was regarded as the standard bearer for our Scottish traditions. After his retirement in 1982, Mr. MacPherson returned to his beloved Nova Scotia where he passed away in March 1988.

Mr. Hamilton was a life-long Andrean. He graduated from SAC in 1933, served as President of the Association, and in 1965 he joined the St. Andrews College staff as Executive Director of the SAC Foundation. Under his leadership, the School added the McLaughlin Science Building and the Bedard Athletic Complex. Mr. Hamilton passed away in November 1989 and the 1990 Tournament was played in his memory.

Dr. Meagher brought a strong academic background to SAC when he was appointed Academic Head of the Lower School in 1972. Until his retirement from the College in 1987, Dr. Meagher was an ardent supporter of life in the Lower School - Mac House, the under 14 hockey team, as well as friend and advisor to many young boys who were just beginning life away from home. In 1987, Dr. Meagher was appointed an Ontario Citizenship Court Judge. He passed away in June of 2000.

  • Clinton McCullough 05Right-winger Clinton McCullough was always a big, tough hockey player. At 63 he played the role of power-forward to perfection. But early in his St. Andrews career, some say he may have lacked confidence to play hockey past Grade 12. That was all put to rest at the 2005 MacPherson Tournament during his graduating year. He dominated that weekend, says teammate Ryan Bryce 05, and basically willed our team to the championship.

The team won and Clinton was named MVP - a huge honour for the Aurora native. A scholar and a Prefect off the ice, he was a popular student at St. Andrews. With the added confidence that his Grade 12 year provided, Clinton decided to forego the usual junior hockey stint that many other players commit to after high school. He went straight to Queens University in Kingston, where he came under the guidance of former Montreal Canadiens star Kirk Muller, and then former Toronto Maple Leaf Alyn McCauley. Both would have a huge influence on his hockey career.

He played at Queens for five years, including on the University's most successful team in 25 years. He graduated with an Honours B.A. in Economics and is again living in Aurora, planning his next move, perhaps after some traveling.

Here are some of Clintons insights into the ups and downs of pursuing and enjoying a university hockey career.

Early years and St. AndrewsId been playing hockey since I was 4 years old. I played Triple-A growing up before coming to St. Andrews for Grade 9 in 2001. Coming to St. Andrews was very much a hockey choice as well as an education choice. My brother Brendon 03 was in the midst of a very positive hockey experience at St. Andrews when I came. Growing up in Aurora, it was my goal to play hockey at St. Andrews.

I played Under-16 for a year under Stephen Kimmerer, Al Dunford in JV in Grade 10, and then John MacDonald for Grade 11 and 12. My last year here we had a very successful team. We went 48-3, won CISAA, MPHL and the MacPherson Tournament. Memories from the MacPherson tournament and that year are some that I will not soon forget. Playing in that tournament was where I really started to realize that my hockey career could go beyond the CISAA.

Being at St. Andrews really made me organize my priorities. We played well over 50 games, and academics were also a big part of my life, so I had to be pretty organized to make sure I could succeed in both. It was great preparation for university and for life.

Queens UniversityAt Queens, I made the varsity team in my first year. After St. Andrews, I attended some Jr. A and OHL camps and then decided it would be best to continue my education at Queens where Kirk Muller was coach. As an 18-year-old, I was very young, because a lot of university hockey players play a year or two of junior before making the move to the CIS. Most guys are 21 or 22. I even played with a guy who was 30. These guys were not my age. But Kirk took me under his wing and really showed me the ropes and how to act and play like a pro.

In my first game with Queens, the team was piped on to the ice for the home opener in front of a large crowd and it brought back many great memories of St. Andrew's particularly Friday night MacPherson - it was a great feeling. We played about 35 games a year at Queens. We started in September - first day of school - and played right up until March. Games were on weekends, and we practiced Monday to Thursday. You could

MacPherson a springboard to a five-year career at Queens University

  • count on devoting three hours a day to hockey. We trained together as a team during the off-season. During the summer you went away with a training program and you were tested when you came back in September. It was a lifestyle.

Aspirations, mentors -- and injuryThe top tier guys at Canadian universities are definitely looking to play pro hockey in Europe or in the US. But there is also a group who are there to get an education. They still want to play hockey for a while, and if it goes well for them, great. But they know a non-hockey career choice will likely fair better for them, and the transition to pro isnt easy. I had aspirations early on. With Kirk coaching me during my first year and former Leaf Alyn McCauley in my fourth year, I had some pretty good mentors to help me along. They turned me on to the idea of pro. But I ran into some injury problems. I had my second shoulder dislocation late in my fourth year, missed the last five games, and then needed shoulder surgery. That led me to the decision to head back for a fifth year at Queens. After surgery, there was no way I could be at my best for a pro tryout, so I figured Id play out my eligibility. We had a good team that year, but after the injury, my own productivity wasnt where it should have been, and that pretty much dictated how things went with my hockey career.

Teen choicesWhen it was time for me to leave St. Andrews, I might have sought a bit more guidance as to how to manage my hockey career. If I were doing it again, I probably would. I might have played some junior and then tried to go the US route. But I decided to make education my foremost priority. Id talked to Kirk Muller about Queens and I liked what we discussed. I might have made a different decision with some more guidance, but I might not have. So looking back now, I think I did the right thing.

The MacPherson TournamentWinning MVP at the MacPherson Tournament was a huge honour, a real highlight of my hockey career. I was well aware of the tournament from a young age, being from Aurora and then from watching both brothers Brendon (03) and Colin (07). The MacPherson Tournament never fails to bring in the best competition around. In 05 we had a great team, so I was really looking forward to the tournament. I remember putting up some pretty good numbers. I had a couple of big goals in the final a g a i n s t Northwood, so it went well for me and for the team so they saw fit to give me MVP. I had some great teammates and Im in touch with a lot of them to this day. These days I play recreational hockey. We have a solid team of Old Boys who play down at York U n i v e r s i t y every Wednesday. So now its for fun with friends.

It was a Movember to remember for a number of the seniors on 1st Hockey. In order to raise money and awareness for men's health, the coaching staff and 7 members of the team grew a little hair on their upper lips for a good cause. In the process, the team raised $1500 for prostate cancer research and got a number of laughs around school and against opposing teams. It was all for good fun and a good cause and the coaches are already talking about next Movember when they get to do it all over again with a new crop of players!

Movember Members: Dan Barker (Most Money Raised), Anthony ponzo, Leland de Langley, Kyle Coughlin, Matt Sovereign, Hayden Neuman, Richard Occhipinti, along with coaches David Manning, Geoff Brennagh 94 and Jamie Macpherson '99.

  • On Saturday, December 4th, the First Hockey team welcomed Jim McClocklin '66 into their newly renovated locker room at the Aurora Community Centre. Jim is a proud supporter of hockey at St. Andrew's and donated a new floor for the locker room emblazoned with the School crest. He and his family gathered to spend time and share stories with members of the First Hockey team. Also joining the group were Headmaster Kevin McHenry and Executive Director of Advancement Scott Hayter. Following the unveiling of the new floor, the first Hockey team went on to beat the National Sports Academy 8-2.

Jim was a member of the First Hockey team from 1963-1966 and captain during his final season. He moved on to play at Cornell University and won an NCAA National Championship with the "Big Red" in 1970. The most valuable player of the annual Macpherson Hockey Tournament is named in his honour.
