Standing side by side on a paintballcourse with Mark Ballard is notsomething I’ve ever pictured

myself doing. Even more so, in theweeks leading up to that moment, I cer-tainly would have never thought I’d bemaking bouquets with him on his newshow “Mark Being Mark”.

Nonetheless, despite our pokes atthe level of celebrity he’s achievedaround here, and his obvious tanningaddiction (We actually had a lady callconcerned about Mark’s Tanning Rehab. It was a joke, ya’ll. ) we’ve become fastfriends. Anyone who knows Markknows he’s hilarious and he’s more thanwilling to make fun of himself.

Last year, at the Reader’s ChoiceAwards, we watched as Ballard vs. BenJones was decided with a first roundknockout by Mark in an arm wrestlingcompetition. He returned that favor byasking me to come on his new realityshow, and learn how to put togetherbunches of flowers to “make them beau-tiful.” Turns out, I’m pretty good atarranging flowers, and my duct tapehandmade vase beat out Mark’s ribbontying and I inevitably won the competi-tion. For round two, I asked Mark to

come hog hunting with me, and he citedhis love of animals and declined (he’sobviously never run into a wild hog).We kept prodding and finally the pro-ducers of “Mark Being Mark” talkedhim into playing paintball with me, andlet it be part of his show. I think hehoped to beat me on a field that wasmore my style. He didn’t. By the end ofthe day, a few camera people had takenshots, Mark was completely covered inyellow paint, and though he did hit meonce in the mouth, I don’t think I evenhad to wash my clothes. Sorry Mark, but you suck at paintball. He then wrotean article about it in The Telegraphwhich my entire South Georgia familyread and loved. My beautifu,l 94 year-old grandmother, cooped up in a homein Cochran, still asks me about Markevery time she sees me. “How’s MarkBallard doing Brad?” (this is before sheasks about me). “He’s doing fine maw-maw.” I pretend I know how he’s doing.I’m hoping she’s still here by the timethe show comes out. It was worked onby some of Macon’s finest, TabithaWalker, Elliot Dunwody and StephanieShadden, and I know it’s going to besomething to behold, just like Ballard.

“It’s a continuous thing from 1986 until now andI’m still working,” said 79-year-old native MaconiteWilfred Stroud about his murals. Stroud’s works of

art, proudly displayed at the Harriet Tubman Museumon Walnut Street, chronicle the history and contribu-tions of African Americans.

Panel No. 9 of the acclaimed mural “From Africa toAmerica” will be unveiled by Stroud on Sunday, Feb.21. This 3 month labor of love brings the pictorial histo-ry timeline up to present day. “Each panel deals with acertain period of time,” Stroud said. “This one includespeople who made extraordinary contributions from1990 to now.”

President Barak Obama is the centerpiece of the 9thpanel, according to Stroud, and he is accompanied byFirst Lady Michelle Obama, Condoleezza Rice and manyothers. “My work covers all areas of achievements: ath-letes, politicians, religious leader and entertainers,”Stroud said. “They are all outstanding folks that I feltmade notice and contributions. They weren’t just peoplewith names, but people with substance and character.”

Stroud included Michael Jackson in his most recentpanel after discovering that the performer was “a per-son concerned with the welfare and condition of thepeople that he knew in his audience, country andworld.” He said, “A lot of things [about Jackson] thatwere in the papers and magazines were sensational

leading toward negative and I found out after his deaththat he was more than just a persona.”

Stroud was commissioned to paint the mural onblack history by Richard Kyle in 1986. Completing thefirst seven panels by 1988, he finished the majority ofthe mural in 1998—only adding to the mural to recordspecial events. Since then, he has worked on murals inlocal grammar schools for the Head Start Program.

Recalling some of his major achievements, Stroudhumbly mentioned his portrait of Sydney Lanier whichhangs in the Capital building in Atlanta as well as a por-trait of Rodney Davis, a Marine killed in the Vietnam War.

“I’ve met quite a few people during my time,” hesaid. “It is hard to say which one impressed me themost. It’s the individual talent, personality and sub-stance of a person that is important. That thing that youdon’t see in a picture…my main thing is to capture thespirit and character of the person as well as the resem-blance. I try to go behind the face as if seeing what’sbehind the pose.”

The unveiling of Panel No. 9 will take place onSunday, Feb. 21, from 4 – 6 p.m., at the TubmanMuseum located at 340 Walnut Street. Admission is freefor members and $6 for the general public. For moreabout the exhibitions at the museum, visit www.tub-manmuseum.com.- JENNY MURR

BY KEVIN P. BRADLEY

In the interest of full disclosure, I willnote at the outset that the author’s wife isan employee of a Georgia public school

system. And yes, you are right, I didn’t saywhich one. The last thing anyone needs tohear from a lame duck governor, particularlya republican lame duck governor, is somebright idea about making material changes toan existing institution. With no issue ofreelection at stake, the governor making hiscurtain call has nothing restraining him or herfrom sticking it to the electorate good andhard. Usually the idea in question boils downto a “heads I win, tails you lose” propositionfavoring some vested interest. Republicanstend to be particularly troublesome in thisregards, as virtually every policy the partyhas forwarded since they dropped the lastshovelful of dirt on Honest Abe has essential-ly worked out in a “rich get richer and thepoor get poorer” sort of way.

Case in point: Our own fearless leader, good ole Guvnah Sonny Perdue, let loosewith a bold new plan to ruin, excuse me,save, public education last month in his

remarks at the annual “Eggs and Issues”breakfast with the Georgia Chamber ofCommerce. Sonny has come up with a beau-tifully simple plan to improve the quality ofpublic education in Georgia - tying teacherraises to student achievement rather thanyears of service or level of education.

Yes, I know, it sounds good, so elegant,so commonsensical. Let’s give the teachers afinancial incentive to stuff their charges’ littlebrains as full of knowledge as they can getthem. Our public schools will become thewonder of the world, capitalism is vindicated, milk and honey to follow, etc., etc.

First, let’s begin with something every-one can agree on - the primary and secondaryeducational system in this state stinks. Yearafter year Georgia’s ranking among the fiftystates and the District of Columbia in nearlyevery measure of student achievement beginswith the number “4.” For recent products ofour school systems, this means that Georgiahangs out near the bottom (though neveractually at the bottom -Thank YouMississippi!). And guess where Georgiaranks in terms of how much the averageteacher salary exceeds the average salary of

all workers. Here is a hint - the answer isforty-third out of fifty-one.

Anyway, Georgia currently handlesteacher salaries and salary increases accord-ing to a graduated pay scale, as do most gov-ernmental institutions, including the military.Salary increases according to both years ofexperience and advancement in rank. Forteachers, rank advancements are achieved byincreasing the level of educational degree,i.e., a teacher with a master’s degree willearn more than one with a bachelor’s degree, and so forth. The beauty of the present sys-tem is the even-handedness of it - a teacherwill earn the same and advance the sameindependently of whether he or she choosesto teach at Richkid Academy or atCracktown High. Therefore there is no finan-cial incentive for a teacher to seek employ-ment at one school over another.

There are, of course, a number of non-financial incentives that cause teachers to seeka position at some school over others. Safetyconcerns, the remoteness of some schools, andsocio-economic factors to put a nice name onit all work under the present system to funnela large percentage of the most qualified teach-ers away from schools in rural and lowincome areas and towards suburban and moreprosperous areas. The Governor’s plan canonly increase this disparity.

Consider - Sonny’s plan calls for teacher

salary increases to be tied to “studentacheivement.” Well, how do we measure“student achievement?” We can’t just look attheir grades for this - even republicans aresmart enough to see the problem with thatone. So, what is the benchmark? We usestandardized test scores! Now, our love affairwith test scores is bad enough - at best whatwe end up with is not students who havebeen taught to think, reason and wonder, butstudents who are really good at taking stan-dardized tests - but linking teacher’s finan-cial advancement to student tests scoresjust makes a bad thing worse. I alreadyknow the counter-argument - if we giveteachers a financial interest in student per-formance, then student performance willimprove. This is a lovely theory which willunfortunately only work in a theoreticalworld. Here in the real world, where newteachers will suddenly be presented withthe necessity of betting their opportunity tomaximize their earning potential of whatschool and school system in which theyobtain employment. Remember the earlierbit about rural and low income area schoolsvis a vis those in suburban and affluentareas? Guess which schools have bettertest scores? Abso-freakin-lutely. The richget richer and the poor get poorer.Apparently the Governor and his boys did-n’t think this through. Or maybe they did.

Over several of my past columns Ihave been highly critical of theBibb County Board of Education

and in particular Bibb County SchoolSuperintendent Sharon Patterson. This col-umn will be no different.

This past week, The Macon Telegraphreported on a vast number of problems thatthe system has had with several of the princi-pals that have been hired during her term asSuperintendent. In most all of the situationsit appears to me that with just a little bit ofdue diligence most of these disgraces shouldhave never been hired in the first place.Board President Gary Bechtel said it best.Quoting from the Telegraph article, Bechtelsaid, “I think we settle too quickly for peo-ple.” Duh... I wonder if anyone even does abasic background check on these applicants. The article says they do….But I wonder. Two of the principals that Bibb County hiredwould not have been hired by their formerschool systems, while a third was graded as“ineffective” in an earlier job review. Maybea 20 minute conversation with the applicant’sformer employer would uncover the truth.

Now I know that what SharonPatterson said in this article is true whenshe says, “Anytime you hire someone, youare in no position to know if they willwork out.” I do a great deal of hiring inmy job. Not all of the candidates workout. But I can bet you that if they havesome problems in their past related to theindustry that they are applying in, we findout. And they are NOT hired! Whyshould we expect anything less from ourschool system?

Let’s face some facts. Bibb Countyhas enough of a handicap bringing newpeople into our county without being ham-

strung by a lousy school system withincompetent leadership. Crime in Maconremains largely unchecked and even whena criminal is arrested, their bail is so low hecan get out of jail for less than the cost of aHappy Meal at McDonald’s; our CityCouncil is full of politicians who have amuch greater desire to be reelected to theCity Council than to look out for their con-stituents best interests; the City of Macon isthe 7th poorest city in the nation per capita;and we’re building housing projects at a costof $130,000 per unit. Yeah…Macon is with-out a doubt the place where new industrywants to start. Then go ahead and throw inthe fact that when someone moves into ourfair county, their child’s well being and edu-cation is being trusted to a school systemwho hires principals who in one case, chokeda student, told teachers that if they didn’t dothings his way they could go home or “feelthe wrath of the big panther” and had amural of himself painted on a wall in theschool. Who the hell did this guy think hewas? Fidel Castro? And what was Mrs.Patterson’s response? “He was a first-yearprincipal, so you want to give him a chanceto settle in,” she said. This guy just makesme sick. Thank God he’s already resigned. Now it’s time for Sharon Patterson to followsuit. Even the Telegraph’s head liberalCharles Richardson is calling for her head.(Make yourself right with God people! I’magreeing with Charles E.! The end is nigh.)

The school system is imploding as wespeak and we must start rebuilding it todayby not only getting rid of the incompetentMrs. Patterson, but also the minions that shehas hired who surround her and have beenaccomplices in her ineptitude. If our countyis ever to have a fighting chance of gettingout of this funk we are in, it has to start withthe school system. (On Monday, Feb 8, the

School Board agreed to pay Patterson$198,000 to buy out her contract that was

thru 2011, Patterson will retire from the BibbCounty School System March 1.)

This documentary takes the stellar cut footage from WHEN WE WERE KINGS and chronicles the concerts from big names such as James Brown, B.B. King, Bill Withers, and Celia Cruz. Though Zaire '74 might have been overlooked in favor of the legendary fight, SOUL POWER still packs a serious punch for music fans.

CITY SCENE

banks are going bust; shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter; punks are run-ning wild in the street, and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what todo, and there's no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfitto eat. And we sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that todaywe had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's sup-posed to be! We all know things are bad -- worse than bad -- they're crazy … So, Iwant you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chairs. I want you toget up right now and go to the window, open it, and stick your head out and yell,“I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!!”

Those memorable linesare from the movie“Network” released in

1976. But they sound likethe rhetoric echoing throughlocal neighborhoods now. Infact, some residents of theIngleside neighborhood havedecided they’re not taking itanymore. They’ve bandedtogether to fund private, off-duty police patrols. They gotthe idea from an Atlanta neighborhood where it’s successful.

When this hit the news recently, a few eyebrows were raised. More protec-tion for those who can pay??

But it’s really not news. People pay for more protection all the time, and Idon’t mean through burglar alarms and gated communities. Moonlighting byMacon police officers is established. It’s also desirable to them, as it supplementstheir wages (another topic for another day).

Some night clubs hire three or four officers a night. It keeps on duty officerspatrolling rather than responding to every bar brawl. Police funeral escorts areprivately funded. You’ll see privately paid officers on traffic control at Sundaychurch services. I usually notice a uniformed officer when I shop at Chichesters. Some banks and convenience stores hire police protection. Our local malls haveofficers patrolling the parking lots. The list goes on. If these folks didn’t hireMPD officers, they’d recruit off duty sheriffs or use private agencies.

State law protects the right of law enforcement officers to be employed pri-vately during off-duty hours. The law also requires written approval by theirchief or designee.

The MPD has strict policies regarding off-duty employment. Such employ-ment may not interfere with their city job. They must complete a Worker’sCompensation Agreement form, and agree to accept legal responsibility for anyliability that results from their off-duty employment. Rooky officers are not eligi-ble. Officers who abuse sick leave, plus those on extended sick leave or lightduty, etc., are not eligible. Moonlighting may not detract from the physical ormental ability of an officer to perform their MPD job. They may not moonlightfor any entity convicted of the illegal sale of contraband or narcotics or a place ofillegal operation. And the list goes on.

Off-duty neighborhood policing does not supplant routine precinct patrols. Those will and must continue. What off-duty policing may do is reduce the 911calls on-duty officers respond to, thereby actually increasing routine patrols andreducing crime overall.

It’s a pity our neighborhoods have come to this. Despite the recession andour shrunken revenues, we expect the beginning stages of a long overdue payscale to be proposed in the upcoming city budget cycle. This may help withpolice hiring and retention. But will more pay and more officers prevent one guyshooting another over an Xbox? We’ve got some complex problems that lawenforcement alone can’t solve.

For now though, I tip my hat to the neighborhood activists of Ingleside. They’re not sitting on the sidelines pointing fingers and antagonizing. They’vedeveloped an extensive, responsive neighborhood watch system. They’re “gettingup out of their chairs” and taking proactive steps to make their streets safer. They’re rallying the troops, and I believe their actions will have a very positiveripple effect throughout the city.

“I don’t have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knowsthings are bad. It’s a depression. Everybody’s out of work orscared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel’s worth;

THURSDAY, 2/11Christabel & The Jons @ The BirdChristabel and the Jons is currently on tourfrom Louisiana to Maine and everywhere inbetween, promoting their album Custom Madefor You and singing a bunch of new bossa novaand country swing tunes which will soon berecorded on their third CD, The Same Mistake.Lead singer and songwriter Christa DeCicco isearning a reputation as one of the southeast'sfinest laid-back jazz singers.

FRIDAY, 2/12Drivin’ N’ Cryin’ @ The BirdCountless followers have rallied to the call ofd'n'c' ever since the group exploded out ofAtlanta and began their epic as one of the greatlive bands of all time. Their hits - "Fly MeCourageous," "Scarred but Smarter," "Build aFire," "Honeysuckle Blue," & "Straight toHell" - brought Southern rock to its peak ofconcise, passionate eloquence. Driven by alethal rhythm combination, with Tim Nielsenon bass and Jeff Sullivan on drums, the unmis-takable voice and lyrics of Kevn Kinneyburned like a brand into the hearts of fans.

Stoopgrass @ Rivalry’sMatt Moncrief’s newest project is a full bandand all original music. Members from the pop-ular Red Fish Blu Fish have regrouped; PrestonHawke and Billy Lyons with Travis Bryant toform a sort of Macon supergroup. Currentlyrecording an album due out in March,Stoopgrass is a new brand of rock/jam/blue-grass that Macon can call all it’s own.

The Unmentionables @ Wild Wing From Bill Withers, to the Beatles, theUnmentionables play it all, and they play itwell. You will want to bring your dancingshoes to this show, as the Unmentionables aregoing to have you on the feet.

B Keith Williams @ 20’s PubB. Keith Williams has performed with: GreggAllman, REO Speedwagon, The Romantics- Atlanta Rhythm Section, Willie Nelson, andhe can sing them all. A great performaer thatplays all the hits you love to sing along to.

SATURDAY, 2/13Oh Dorian @ The 567Oh Dorian seemingly crept out of nowhere, moving quickly from tiny dive bars to famedlistening rooms like Eddie’s Attic and openinggigs for acts like The Indigo Girls and ModernSkirts. The power of her voice is matched onlyby her seriousness and dedication as an artist.Tonight she’ll be performing for the first timeever live new songs to be recorded this sum-mer. She will be sharing the stage withHarrison Hudson, Molly Parden and KennethDriggers.

TUESDAY, 2/16Fat Tuesday with K-Mo @ TheRookery K-Mo was once a staple of Macon, playing weekly at Trio, and as Trio vanished, itseemed, so did he. He plays some soulful hitsfrom Macon's past and masters his instrumentlike few can. If you haven't tried some of theRook's New Orleans style dishes, you're miss-ing out, and their hurricane's are as authentic asthey come.

THURSDAY, 2/18Wes Heath @ CJ’sBorn and raised in Macon, Wes was exposed toa variety of musical styles very early in life.Playing 250-300 shows a year all over the U.S.for the better part of the last decade. Bringing asense of showmanship not often found withmany solo acts, he is as enetertaining as he istalented; taking performance cues from suchlegends as Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, BillyJoel, and the King, Elvis Presley.

FRIDAY, 2/19The Roly-Bots featuring The RoyalFireworks @ The BirdThe Roly Bots are our favorite band. I knowwe say it a lot but it’s true. It’s fun to dance to,it’s rock and roll, poppy and weird. But thisnight is special because one of our favorite gui-tarists, Brent Evans of Athens fame, who’sbeen sitting in his room practicing for like eightyears, is finally going back on stage. It’s trulysomething to behold. I wouldn’t miss it.

Lixxy Fox @ The Wild Wing CaféFrom the band The Mighty McFly, Lixxy is theuber hot guitar player that can do it all, fromAC/DC to ZZ Top. Playing hits from the 80’sand 90’s Lixxy is a true bad ass to listen to and towatch. It’s a fun show you’ll want to dance to.

SUNDAY, 2/21Josh Carson @ Mellow MushroomWhitesnake, David Hasselhoff, John Tesh, TheBeatles, James Taylor, Paul Simon, SammyLoggins, are listed as some of this guys favoritesand he plays them all. Well, maybe notHasselhoff. Best known for his stint withAcoustic Workshop, Josh has made a name forhimself among Macon singer/songwriters.

IS ON! His real name is Kevin, butamongst the Macon communityhe’s known as the only local hip-

hop artist who can reference “How I MetYour Mother” and Times New Romanand yet remain incredibly, effortlesslycool. Meet Floco Torres.

If you’ve heard some of Floco’s songsand wondered why they sound so differ-ent from other Macon musicians, it’sbecause he is an adopted outsider. Byway of New Jersey, Floco found himselfin Georgia just last year, and he hassince made himself a staple of theMacon music scene. The songs on hismost recent album, “Psychadelphia,”take listeners on genre-bending ridesthrough rap, hip-hop, rock, pop, funkand God knows what else, solidifyingFloco as one of Macon’s most versatileand creative musical artists.

We’ve come to know Floco Torres forthe addictive beats and his talent forwordplay that puts many popular song-writers to shame, and you can expectthe same from Floco’s most recent musi-cal project––a 13-song mixtape called“The Anti-Valentine’s Day Color is STILLGreen.” The mixtape is a follow-up to asimilar compilation Floco made last yearcalled “The Anti-Valentine’s Day Color isGreen,” which was released, not on theday hated most by all bitterly single peo-ple, but a month later on St. Patrick’sDay. Thus the green.

Mixtapes, as anyone who has prac-ticed the meticulous art of playlist-mak-ing knows, serve as outlets of emotionalexpression. Although the idea of anAnti-Valentine mixtape may seem child-ish or even immature, for Floco it’s just away to vent about the frustrations oflove and heartache.

“I haven’t really had a lot of greatrelationships,” he said. So after more

than a few heartbreaks, Floco createdthe first anti-Cupid mixtape last year. When you listen to songs like “The AntiValentine” and “60 Seconds of YourTime,” you can get an idea of the emo-tional state Floco was in when he creat-ed the mix. (Hint: “I hate them and Ihope they stub their toes”).

If Floco’s brand of Anti-Valentine bit-terness is what you need, you can stillfind those sentiments on this year’scompilation. But you’ll also find moresongs about healing, accepting andmoving on. As it turns out, Floco hasn’tcompletely given up on love. “I’m stillupset with the broken heart aspect, butafter this last year, experiencing reallybeing in love or whatever, you can’t real-ly hate it all the way,” he said.

This year’s mixtape release will bekicked up a notch. Several local artistshave already agreed to create artworkaround the Anti-Valentine’s Day themefor a joint art show and CD release party. With additional visual elements, Flocohopes the music will relate to people onan even greater level. “You come in,look at the pictures, take in the wholeenergy of experiencing the heartbreak, hearing the songs, experiencing it, danc-ing, raging, whatever you want to do.Sweat it out ... Listen to the mixtape andjust let that feeling go,” he said.

For Floco, the creation process itselfhas been therapeutic. Still, not even heknows whether to expect anotherValentine mixtape for 2011. “I just wantto say goodbye to stuff that happenedlast year, start over again this year andhopefully not have to write a new mix-tape next year,” Floco said.

But who knows? Perhaps Floco Torreshas some love songs up his sleeves.- LILLIAN SHAW

16 February 11 - 24, 2010

Since I moved to Macon, CJ’s has been theplace that I wander to when I’m feeling in themood for some good, serious comfort food. I

live downtown, and I’m completely guilty of notdoing enough that I can’t walk to, but when themood hits for some feel good eating, its CJ’s that Iusually turn to. Chuck and John are the bar ownersthat I would aspire to be. Come midnight, you prob-ably won’t see them whooping and hollering on atable top about being bar owners, but come ninea.m. there they are, side by side, working on gettinganother day up and going in a business that is any-thing but easy.

They are some of my oldest customers, andprobably my favorite. So yes, this review is notobjective, because I’m a fan. However, when you’retalking about something like a Grilled CheeseBurger, who gives a crap if your objective. Andwhen I say Grilled Cheese Burger ($9.95) I meanGRILLED CHEESE burger, not cheeseburger. That’s right. A giant, chopped sirloin patty with aslice of bacon and two grilled cheese sandwiches forthe bun. It’s decadent, over the top, and I ate andenjoyed every last drop.

CJ’s has always been in theburger business, for 11 yearsthey’ve had some of the best burg-ers Macon has to offer. Recently, they added a few new items to themenu, like the Grilled Cheeseburgerthat spark your imagination asmuch as your taste-buds. Take theCereal Burger for example, servedwith Captain Crunch and PeanutButter. Or the scramble burger in abowl covered with chili and cheeseand served with crackers. Or, ifyou’re a real serious meat lover, take the CJ’s ulti-mate food challenge and order the MightyMccallum. Four, half-pound patties live inside thisbehemoth, with cheese, lettuce, tomato and a friedegg between EACH patty. The grilled cheesereplaces the bun and it’s served with a whoppingone pound of fries. This man-meal is $18.95 butfree if you can finish in thirty minutes. Good luck! But burgers aren’t all CJ’s offers. I’m talking thebest chicken fingers in the world hand-cut and bat-tered to order, and some of the best nachos, they’ve

got great melts, great sandwiches (Kielbasa Sausage$7.95 is my favorite). They also have an awesomecatering menu for any style party you can imagine. They just bought a new smoker from Bubba Grills, and it does some good work too. I had one of theirsmoked turkey breasts, cold, the other day and it stillmelted in my mouth. I wouldn’t hesitate to rate CJ’sone of the best stops in town for bar food. They’vebeen doing it for over a decade and they’ve gotteneverything right.- BRAD EVANS

Thursday, Feb 187:45p.m. at the Capitol‘Easy to Assemble’ followed byQ&A with Illeanna Douglas

Illeana Douglas, playing herself, announces in an early episode ofthe show she created and wrote forthe emerging Web series market: “Idecided to turn down the bad TVmovie and live my life as a bad TVmovie instead.” So she’s taken ajob at the Burbank Ikea. The show, which launched last year, findscomedy in the small and largehumiliations of the acting life, especially after 40. Her attempt toleave Hollywood behind is con-stantly thwarted by show-biz typeslike her friend Justine Bateman, who shows up at the store anddecides to host a talk show there, with Jeff Goldblum as the firstguest. The scripted show is brand-ed entertainment — but includes ahealthy dose of satire of Ikea’scan-do, relentlessly cheerful aes-thetic and its meatball- and lin-gonberry-saturated Swedishness.

What started out as an onlineentertainment experiment forDouglas turned into an internetsensation overnight, with over250,000 YouTube views duringits first week. The show was thenpicked up by CBS for its websiteTV.com and is now in its secondseason.

Friday, Feb 199:00p.m. at the Capitol‘Stuck’ followed by Q&A withdirector Steve Balderson

Filmmaker Steve Baldersondebuts his latest independentfilm, “Stuck!” which was filmedin Macon in the Spring of 2009and stars many Macon main-stays on Friday, February 19, at9 p.m. Balderson will be a spe-cial guest of the festival and hewill conduct a filmmaking work-shop that is free and open to thepublic.

"I'm very thrilled to have theGeorgia premiere of 'Stuck!' inMacon,” says Balderson. “Thereare so many local peopleinvolved - from Macon actors tolocal folks who donated theirtime and hospitality. I'm excitedfor them to see it on the bigscreen.”

Balderson brought his crewto town last spring to film“Stuck!” along with a cast thatincludes Karen Black, JaneWiedlin (of The GoGo’s),Pleasant Gehman, and JohnWaters’ staple star, Mink Stole. The bulk of the cast, though, iscomprised of dozens of CentralGeorgia actors familiar to the-atre-goers, including actressSeptember Carter as the motherof the main character.

Sunday, Feb 217:30p.m. at the Capitol‘That Evening Sun’ a new filmby Ray McKinnon

The Macon Film Festival willclose the 2010 festival with theMacon premiere of “ThatEvening Sun,” the award-win-ning film starring Macon-nativeCarrie Preston with HalHolbrook, Dixie Carter, and RayMcKinnon, at 7:30 p.m., fol-lowing the Festival awards cere-mony at 7 p.m.

This is southern gothicat its very best.

The film has already rackedup 10 awards during its circuitincluding a Special Jury Awardfor Best Ensemble cast at theSXSW Film Festival; AtlantaFilm Festival and NewportInternational Film Festival andnominations for Best SupportingActor and Actress for MiaWasikowska and Ray McKinnonat the Independent SpiritAwards.

With you having a permanent residence on theWest Coast, how did you first hear about theMAGA Festival located across the country? It was when one of the festival organizers Cindy Hillcontacted me and mentioned that there was a Best inShow award that they were naming the MelvynDouglas Award as he was from Macon. I’m his grand-daughter, and as this was the inaugural year for theaward’s new name, would I like to come down andpresent it, and I actually thought that would be a funthing to do. I like to do things that celebrate my grand-father and his fantastic career, and it gives me a chanceto come to Macon.

Mentioning that your grandfather was from Maconbrings up a theory that I have that is based off ofyour “Stir of Echoes” costar Kevin Bacon. Just likethe game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon,” I’m con-vinced that there is a “Six Degrees from Macon”whether it is in music or film.(Laughs) I never really heard much about Macon frommy grandfather; more from my father who grew up inGainesville. He did have very much a Southern back-ground and gentlemanliness about him, but once yougo to Hollywood they try to take all of that out. I do remember that his mother, who was kind of asouthern belle, put him in a bunch of beautiful babycontests. That sounds like something that could onlyhappen in the South.

From what you know of your grandfather, how doyou think he would feel about this award beingnamed for him? Was he shy about the spotlightbeing placed on him? Yeah, it appeared to be thatway for me. I’m totally different; I want all the glam-our (laughing). I’m not shy about it at all. He won twoOscars, and a Tony, and an Emmy, and I think havingcome from a very long and illustrious career at MGMin the ‘30s and ‘40s he took it more in stride. I can’timagine what he would think of the Oscars these dayswhich are very, very commercial.

When I think of my grandfather, I think of a crafts-man in terms of his work and his respect of the profes-sion.

In addition to being on hand for the award dedica-tion, you are also going to be here for MAGA’sopening night on February 18th with a screening of“Easy to Assemble” which you not only write, pro-duce, and direct, but also star in. My character pretty much shuns the Hollywoodlifestyle to go to work at an IKEA, and to put a braveface on it, I call myself a Celebrity Outreach Director. The truth about it is that I’m tired of the Hollywoodgrind, and I just want to live a normal life so I go towork at this IKEA. And sure enough, the first thingthat happens is my friend, played by Justine Bateman, comes to visit me, and she thinks it is a pretty goodgig. Soon enough Jeff Goldblum comes down, andKevin Pollack comes and starts an Actor’s Anonymousgroup in the living room set. IKEA embraces itbecause they think it is great that all of these actorswant to work there, but I think it is horrible as I justwant to live a normal life.

You’ve worked extensively in both film and televi-sion, but it sounds as though the medium that youare now using with “Easy to Assemble” has beenthe best experience in terms of keeping your fingeron the pulse of the project. One of the most amazingthings about “Easy to Assemble” is that we shoot it,and we edit it, and the entire thing is on the air in amatter of months. I’ll always love making movies andguest starring on television because I just love acting, and I love working. But, the difference between this ishaving a little bit more control of what the storyline isand having a distribution arm that people can see it.There are many movies that are done that people havea hard time finding them. They might show up onNetflix, but is seems harder and harder to find yourfavorite actors that you like, and I definitely go in thevein of independent films, and independent films seemto be coming a little scarce these days.

I definitely like the ability to cast who I want tocast, or mix in something that I think would be reallyfunny to see Jeff Goldblum do. I’ve always been alongtime fan of Jane Lynch, and we had her in theshow. INTERVIEW CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

Speaking of something completely dif-ferent, Kevin Pollack appeared on“Easy to Assemble,” but you had alsostarred with him and Daniel Stern in apretty off beat movie, “Otis,” a coupleof years back. It is the story of anabductor and killer told with lots ofeffective comedy and a rockin’ ‘70ssoundtrack throughout. Was it yourcomedic outlook that drew you to thisfilm as that blending of styles seemsrather hard to pull off? It was actually the director, Tony Krantz, who I’ve actually known from televisiondays. I’ve always been a huge fan. Whenwe all talked about the script, the ideawas to make it comedic and make it ablack comedy, and in that sense I trustedthe director. Sometimes you do moviesjust because there fun to do them andyou get to spend a few weeks workingwith someone like Daniel Stern; I can’tturn that down because it was just somuch fun. I’ve been such a big fan of hisfrom “Diner” and “Home Alone,” and“Hannah and Her Sisters,” and he’s justsuch an iconic figure to me. It was also the chance to work withWarner Brothers. The same time I wasdoing that, they were actually in themiddle of doing a DVD release of“Being There,” which I was participatingin, too. Working for Warner Brothers isalways great as they are one of the laststudios that have a kind of identifiablemovie that they make, and I enjoyedworking with them.

Your role as Angela on“Six Feet Under” gar-nered you an Emmy nomi-nation. Did you find thatafter a recognition such asthat was bestowed uponyou that there was anychange to the way thewriters approached yourcharacter? In that particular case, well,we all know what a greatshow “Six Feet Under” was, there was a lot of talk after I got nomi-nated about making my character a regu-lar character on the show. I was reallydisappointed, of course, that that didn’thappen; there was a lot of fan supportfor that, and you can’t ever really figureout why decisions are made like that. But, they did bring me back the last yearto kind of tie up some story lines.Sometimes it’s exciting if you can makean impression with something that itstays in people’s minds for years after sothat they bring you back.

I always try to do the best job that Ican, and I’ve always been thrilled by theamount of fan support that I’ve had.Again, part of the reason that I’m doingthe show “Easy to Assemble” is that itgives me that ability to let people knowthat I’m here (laughing); people want tosee you in movies. Every year, it seemsthat it is the same ten people starring inthe movies, and it is always so refresh-ing to see a movie where you don’t

know the people as well; it gets youmore interested in the storyline. I think“Six Feet Under” had that kind of quali-ty as the characters and storyline were sodifferent and nobody was really famouson the show. The climate these days, forme anyways, it can be very jarring whenyou see incredibly famous people comingon and doing shows. That’s the climate;there’s not a lot of work right now. (laugh-ing) But, they can all be on my show!

That variation is just one of the greatthings about attending a film festivalinstead of going to a multiplex wherethey are showing the same movie on fourscreens. I’m always supportive of filmfestivals as it is a great way to see movies- the old fashioned way. I can’t wait tosee the reaction to “The Candidate.”When you compare a movie like that tothe political movies of today that seemvery slick, “The Candidate” has almost adocumentary feel to it. There is also sucha variety of actors in it.

Crazy Heart (R)Starring Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllanhaal, Colin Farrell, Robert DuvallSome actors are blessed. Jeff Bridges is one of them. Ever since his breakthroughrole in "The Last Picture Show" in 1971, he has, seemingly without effort, createda series of characters who we simply believe, even the alien "Starman." He doesn't dothis with mannerisms but with their exclusion; his acting is as clear as running water.Look at him playing Bad Blake in "Crazy Heart." The notion of a broke-down, boozycountry singer is an archetype in pop culture. We've seen this story before. The differ-ence is, Bad Blake makes us believe it happened to him. That's acting. Bridges is a vir-tual certainty to win his first Oscar, after four nominations.

Dear John (PG-13)War as a plot device so we can feel good about feeling badLasse Hallstrom's "Dear John" tells the heartbreaking story of two lovely youngpeople who fail to find happiness together because they're trapped in an adaptationof a Nicholas Sparks novel. Their romance leads to bittersweet loss that's so soft-ened by the sweet characters that it feels like triumph. If a Sparks story ended inhappiness, the characters might be disappointed. They seem to have their noble, resigned dialogue already written. Hemingway wrote one line that could substitutefor the third act of every Sparks story: "Isn't it pretty to think so?"

From Paris With Love (R)Or, more accurately, From Travolta with CGI...Pauline Kael has already reviewed this movie in her book Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and it only took her the title. I could go through my usual vaudeville act aboutchase scenes and queasy-cams and Idiot Plots, but instead I'd like you to join me inthe analysis of something that increasingly annoys me.

The Edge of Darkness (R)Can we think of Mel Gibson simply as an action hero? A star whose personal bag-gage doesn't upstage his performances? I find that I can. He has made deplorablestatements in recent years, which may be attributed to a kind of fanatic lunacy thatcan perhaps be diagnosed as a disease. The fact remains that in "Edge of Darkness"he remains a likable man with a natural screen presence.

The Wolfman (R)Great characters, set, but slow to get started, then it left me altogetherLet me start off with some of the positives of the film. The performances in themovie were absolutely fantastic. Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, HugoWeaving, and Emily Blunt all delivered and really brought their characters to life. The set pieces and cinematography are all beautifully created and the score is fan-tastic. But, eat your popcorn and leave your mind at home..this is brainless fun.

To solve the Sudoku puzzle, each row, column andbox must contain the numbers 1 to 9.

GOOD LUCK!

ARIES (March 21-April 19):You will say things without thinking. You can be arrogant, presumptuous, and your own interests will come first.

You should wait one more week or longer beforemaking any revisions in your plans or actions toanyone. You will find that this will give you timefor a much better chance of success. After thisweek your efforts should go much smoother with-out making so many mistakes in your complex sit-uation. You should also be finished with expendingso much money.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You arepractical, peace loving, stubborn, anddeliberate. Taurus has a natural interestin money, and you like the finer things

in life. Now is the time to hold onto as muchmoney as you can because starting next weekyou will have more than plenty of places to putit. Meanwhile, finish up all the activities onwhich you have been working if you can. ByMonday you will find a little relief. Somethinggood, (not any of your doing) has happened tochange the situation.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Geminiis versatile, fickle, intelligent, creative, quick, neat, and curious. Gemini learnsquickly and has the ability to get a good

education. Clear the decks this week because assoon as next week rolls around you are going to beextremely busy again. This condition will lastthrough mid April so prepare yourself for that event. At that time you will have a more energy to do whatneeds doing. Seeing that you have “been there; donethat”, you have the experience of knowing what todo and just how to do it.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Cancer is sentimental, sensitive, andneeds to have a sense of security.

Cancer is intensely romantic and has a vivid imagi-nation. Wind up your “day work” this week becausenext week for some unfathomable reason you willbe working a night shift as all opposition to whatyou are doing goes away suddenly and completely.Surprising opportunities increase and you have to beready to grab what you can as they show. It will beof help to “think out of the box” as you examinethese opportunities.

LEO (July 23-August 22): Leo is col-orful, self assured, outgoing, impulsiveand expansive. This week will be inter-esting as you learn some things that up to

now have been kept secret from you. (“they” say it isfor your own good.) It may irritate you at first butyou must wait before you say or do something thatyou will later regret. Being left in the dark at times isnot always a bad thing. It could delay your reactionand give you time for some serious examination.

VIRGO (August 23-Sept 22): Virgo isintellectual, critical, fussy, and shy. Donot hesitate any longer to finish up any

project you have been doing. If you can completeyour plans or changes now, you have an excellentchance to succeed. Surprises do not sit well with youright now so you need to listen to your mate or yourfriend the first part of this week.

LIBRA (Sept 23-Oct 22): Libra isartistic, musical, level headed, sympa-thetic, and generous. You can be gossipy,

critical, and bitter. Whatever favors you have donein the past will now be paid back many fold. Youmay have to pass on a hint and ask for help whileyou gently remind those people of what you havedone for them. Karma works, but sometimes a lit-tle “push” to help it along. Do not make anychanges until next week when you have a muchbetter chance of success.

SCORPIO (October 23-Nov 21): You are very intense, strong willed, determined and secretive. You can be

willful and sarcastic, but a deep thinker with a finemind. A very nice surprise should be coming yourway this week. On Valentines Day perhaps? By nextweek you will find your irritation seems to disappearand you will feel much better. You should also be ableto get a more meaningful rest. A lot of your weirdideas may now disappear and everyone should feelmuch more comfortable in your presence.

SAGITARIUS (Nov 22-Dec 21): Sagittarius is warm and friendly. You liketo talk a great deal making it difficult for

others to get a word in edgewise. An unwelcomeevent may come your way on or about Monday butyou will get a chance to turn it around to work in yourfavor by next week. At the same time some goodKarma you have earned in the past is repaid just as itshould be. You can count on those past favors to helpyou out in whatever you need at this point; favors, funds or just simple approval and/or support.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 19):Capricorn is very often politicallyminded. Capricorn is also patient,

reserved, cautious, faithful and shrewd. You couldfind yourself taking an unplanned and unexpectedtrip this week. (It might be exciting.) You may wantto surprise somebody with a quick visit but you mayget a surprise of some kind yourself. Some adjust-ments (of some type) may have to be made in yourbusiness this week, but that seems to take care ofany problem that may have troubled you in the past.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20-Feb 18): Aquarius has a strong will, and is inven-tive, and will always enjoy doing the

unexpected. Hiding some of your income is not work-ing. Wait at least a week to make changes or takingaction. By then you have a chance to go over your fig-ures again and find that you can submit an honestreport. Your attempt to hide funds was not necessary. Itis great to feel charitable toward those poor people inHaiti, but don’t go overboard.

PISCES (Feb 19-March 20):You are emotional, ultra-sensitive, easygoing, and sociable, Worry plaguesyou. Pisces will see only the good in

others. The first part of the week could be veryinventive or creative for you. All you have to do isapply yourself and put on your thinking bonnet. You may be pleasantly surprised by what you canproduce. Toward the end of this week you couldhear about a really nice opportunity with whichyou can create more income. Listen carefully toeveryone and their input.
