    Inthisway,theSlavelementgainedinstrengthwhiletheSlavic-Bulgarianlanguagega inedgroundinthenorthernzone(whattodayisformerYugoslavMacedonia)andinthecentralarea.Afterthe18thcen-tury ,however ,theGreekelementflourishedinamultitudeofwaysintheeconomic,socialandeducationalsectors ,thusleadingtothecompletedominationoftheareabyGreekintellectualandculturalinfluences.WiththesupportandguidanceoftheGreekclergy ,theChristianmassesofMacedoniaacquired aconsciousness of theirGreekidentity.Itischaracter-isticthatnumerousSlavic-speakingChristianssent theirchildrentoGreekschools ,foughtagainsttheOttomanEmpireduringtheGreekWarofIndependenceof1821-28andlatertookpart ,throughout the19thcentury ,inalltheGreek risingsinMacedonia,fightingfortheunificationof Mace-don iaw iththefreeGreekState.
